I just wanted to say thank you Romulus for taking the time to do this list. It has been fun looking at other peoples picks and trying to guess which movies would come out on top. Well done!

Surprised The Ring made it to the list and The Mist is not higher. Good list so far. Romulus, great work and thanks.

Let's wait for the complete list then we can all ***** about how our films did not make it.

The Mist is at #19? Ugh, that is one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen.

People seem to love or hate The Mist. It's probably because it doesn't fit in with the typical Hollywood cliches.

The gore is limited. More attention is focused on the thought behind people's actions. If you take away the creatures, the actions of the people are things that could actually happen. Half of the horror is seeing how low humans get when they are desperate.

It fascinates me to see how roles change in such a situation. Who are the real leaders? Who will step up and who will crumble?

The ending is the other reason many people don't like the movie.

I am in the group that loves it. Frank Darabont and Stephen King come up with the goods again. The lack of a soundtrack until the 1 hour 45 mark are intentional. It makes the scene that follows more dramatic.

Yeah, it's not for everyone. But those that like it will really appreciate it. If you haven't seen it, make up your own mind.

I also think the concluding scene is among the scariest and best ever to end a horror film.
+1

that has such terrorizing power. "the sound of the monster in the woods is always scarier than the image of the monster in the woods"

i was also happy with Scream getting on the list. i saw it during college so perhaps i was malleable to it. an original slasher IMO. only problem was David Arquette...can anyone tell me why that turd ever got in front of a camera?? is he a descendant of the founding warner brothers or something??

last time I saw Descent I had nightmares, that is a true freakshow!! also i loved the real ending (on the blu-ray and UK ending), not the US theatrical ending. perfectly demonstrated the theme that happiness is subjective.

I had very mixed feelings upon viewing it. On one hand, I thought it was well-directed except for the hokey special effects. I also appreciate the attention to character and what decisions ppl make in certain situations. I had no problem with the ending. However, when I judge a movie I wait a week or so and then think about the movie, after everything has set in. Looking back on it, I think it was pretty mediocre but above the level of most modern horror films which have little cinematic value. I give it 2 1/2 stars out of 4.

Arquette provided some comedy relief in Scream. I liked him in those movies, though the first is the best.

Yeap and the thing about the ending,
[Show spoiler]what makes it better than other horror endings is basically it has a resolution in it. Most horror movies lack an answer and in the Mist it combined the elements of tragic and yet comforting to know the Mist is gone and that lady got to be with her children. Thomas Jane's acting in the last scene was just brilliant. Thought he was a great Punisher and he deserves more roles. Oh and the ending was a tad bit realistic and unexpecting.
