So, sometimes I'll go on my desktop real quick to check this site, and all I do is use emoticons since my mouse is accessible but not the keyboard

But yes, I know I'm very long-winded and talk/type much too much. A bad habit that I find hard to break.

Long-winded perhaps, but containing quality and substance is refreshing compared to some of the self congratulatory, anger/ridicule based, empty diatribes that get tossed about here and there. Mostly here.

I really liked the ending and thought it fit well with what the characters knew of their surroundings.

Although I personally didn't like it, I didn't immediately hate it either. I def agree with you about how it fit well--I think it did, to a reasonable extent. I just think it took the thematic point of the story in a different direction that where I thought personally it should have went.

I liked the movie, but the ending was too much for me. I have a 7 year old son, and well...the movie depressed me. I do believe that the movie was very well done. If an alternate ending was included, I would buy it in an instant.

I loved the ending. I've always loved endings that were just entirely non-happy ending, non-traditional ending.

Just the overwhelming sense of "oh bloody hell what have I done?" and just trying to put yourself in his shoes and imagining what that must feel like to have just done that, and then get rescued.

Actually one of my favorite endings of all time.

I thought the ending was stupid. He
[Show spoiler]shoots everyone and then you see the woman who left early on in the film to go and look for her kids and she was perfectly fine with her kids in hand. While Tom Jane blew his kid's brains out. I thought that was stupid.
But that's me.

As heart wrenching as the ending was, I think it completes a piece that is about faith and its extremes, despair, and ultimately the wrongs of giving up.
It makes the movie hard to watch again for me since I am now the father of a one year old, but it definitely is an amazing moment of cinema, albeit a really hard one to watch and stomach.

After all they went through he did it to spare everybody of a horrible death, the way he saw it was that he'd rather have his son and the others have a quick and painless death, that's not stupid imo.

first of all I agree that this movie's ending was clearly different (and daring--even though I didn't like it)

but I think to say having a "happy ending? No way different is always better"
is ironic in todays filmmaking. More horror films made in the last decade or so do not have happy endings-- they usually are downbeat so to me actually having a happy ending is different

That's incredibly stupid imo. And I think the director made light on how stupid and irrational it was. Not to mention it was out of character. If he showed signs of instability that would be a whole different story. But he went from hero to zero.

Well ok then

But let's think for a moment that the military or the US army (or whatever) did not come to help and you're stuck, while everybody is 100 % vulnerable with no weapons, just "survived" a "bleak fest" and all hope is lost.
Would you rather everybody die a horrible and painful death or a quick one?

I agree. I'm putting all this in spoilers.

[Show spoiler]From his point of view every time they left the protection of cover, people died. Large groups began looking for scapegoats to blame and kill, not much better. So they chose to leave and at least have a chance at escape. They drove all the way from town back to his lake house and his wife was killed, in a pretty gruesome way. So they set off to try and get out of the mist. I don't know what the gas tank would hold in that vehicle, but it probably had a decent range so presumably they drove a good distance and even when they ran out of gas were still in the mist and surrounded by monsters. Getting out and walking giving everything they had been through really wasn't an option, or not a desirable one. A quick painless death for everyone giving what they knew was a better option than being impregnated by spiders, disolved by acid, crushed by tenticles or stung by giant wasps. And he did this knowing he wasn't going to "get off easy". Idk, like I said earlier I liked the way the ending just "worked" in the context of the film. Then at the very end when you either expect to see something get him or have a fade out to him screaming, the director gives you a swift kick to the nuts.

But I do understand why some don't like the ending, I just don't agree with them.

Not a nice ending, rather nihilistic, but a fitting one. Yes, it's depressing, however it does make a welcome change to the somewhat bland 'Hollywood happy ever after' ending. Take The Descent for example; hands up who preferred the American ending. And... hands up for the International ending?

And, no, I'm not to bother with a poll for that...

That's obviously the logic behind it but it doesn't make sense. It doesn't connect with the character.
[Show spoiler]He was clearly sane throughout the movie, but then all of a sudden he would rather become the monster that killed his wife and his son's mother? I would never go through all that effort just to shoot everybody in the face. Terrible ending.

Good post and I also do understand why people wouldn't like it, but I just don't agree with that it is stupid, unfair to call it that in my opinion.
The examples you came with, all the potential monstrous deaths is exactly why.
You should also add that literally all hope would be lost given their situation, if I was in that situation I would lose all hope and expect the worst to happen, don't know if I would be able to give everybody a mercy death though.

kolibri
I don't think it's nihilistic, at least not from the main characters perspective.
He did it with all the best intentions.
