My son saw one of the Jay and Silent Bob flicks at a friend's house when he was about 10 and came home swearing like a sailor. The Cheech and Chong movies and their numerous derivatives make drug abuse appear to be desirable. And of course, my biggest bugaboo, the gamut of gruesome murder and torture flicks that appeal in particular to a certain degraded mentality - and make it seem OK. Long from now, when the producers of this garbage are in a terminal state, do they look back on their "accomplishment" and think, "the world is a better place because of my existence"?

(Waiting for Gremal to show up and say A Serious Man)

I think All Modern Disney (Anything that as ever been advertised as an 'Instant Disney Classic')

Disney has become a machine that forces a generation of gullible and image-conscious parents to go buy their brat the latest 'Instant Disney Classic' - or else they're not being good parents.

Kid - you cant even tie your shoes... why the hell do you need to see Pocahontas? You don't even know who she is!

I thought Burn After Reading was a strangely unpleasant film, where the Coens seem to really dislike the characters they created and want to inflict completely needless and cruel brutality upon people who really haven't done anything to merit it

haha....it's not even a movie. There is no film or work of art that I'm so vehemently against as that piece of trash and the shameless filmmakers who made it.

Too many to list but here are some that have launched or re-launched genres that are feeding off the popularity of these so-called hits.

-American Pie (all of them)
-Saw/Hostel
-South Park (the movie and show)

It seems like 80% of what comes out these days are raunchy comedies and torture flicks. This stuff is garbage for your mind. Exposure to trash like this really does affect the way people think but most fans of movies like these will never admit it because they like it too much.

i agree. if you have to constantly make penis joke after penis joke, its probably a red flag that you couldnt pull it off with a PG script like the countless classics with Steve Martin and Bill Murray. same with torture porn: if you only know how to shock people with gore, rather than put them in suspense, like the master Hitchcock, its a red flag that you dont know how to truly terrorize.

Agreed 100%; I couldn't have said it better myself. That's why I avoided all but eight of the films released in the 2009 calendar year, and of those only two are on my video shelf.

Which amazes me (in a negative way), that any person of conscience could even watch this crap, and not be insulted or disgusted by it. It's truly a shame that Hollywood has resorted to this...and what's worse is that unless folks stop buying it, the percentage of "crap vs. non-crap" will only get higher. For years - even decades - statistics galore have shown that Hollywood's #1 priority is money...and as tired as it sounds, it's still true: "If people quit watching it, they'll quit making it."

Completely agree and an interesting way of looking at the question.

Great second sentence---absolutely agree. I'm reminded of the recent book "Columbine," which has won numerous non-fiction book awards (including the Barnes and Noble award). There is a major difference between one person watching a film, like Natural Born Killers for instance, and someone else who watches the film. One may be able to separate him or herself from the content of the film, while the other person may take it too seriously and become immersed in the world and "reality" depicted. It is the latter that is a very scary thing.

Well, either way (be it the fault of the filmmakers or the viewer), I firmly believe that the phrase "it's just a movie" is a myth. It's an excuse used by people who try to rationalize stories which, often enough, shouldn't have been made in the first place. The media is affected by people, that's true - but the people are often far more affected by the media first.

I think if people are affected by the media in a negative way there must've be something wrong with them in the first place.
Blame their parents, their upbringing, not everybody else imo.

I'm more concerned that insipid nonsense based on toys like GI Joe and Transformers is attracting adult demographics Not a good reflection on our culture when our biggest films are based on comic books, toys, and disneyland rides...

Well, when you really look at it, it's a two-way street. People should definitely be both careful and discerning, whatever they choose to watch. However, the studios also need to take responsibility for the messages they're putting in their movies, instead of trying to "shift the blame" completely onto the audience. Both parties - the viewers and the creators - need to share an equal responsibility for the content of entertainment as a whole. Until that happens, both sides will keep bickering, and nothing will change...except for the worse.

Just about every film in history has a negative influence, hands down.

I don't have a huge problem with franchises based on younger fare, so much as I'm wary about what they do with it. Take the "Transformers" franchise for example. The first film had a pretty good story, all told...but did we really need Mikhaela to be dressed in revealing outfits, while everyone else wears camouflage or street clothes? Did we really need a discussion about masturbation, or references to pornography? Does the U.S. President really need to be depicted as clueless during such a huge crisis? All of these elements add up to form a sizable "black mark" on the film's moral record, especially since its based off a line of kids' toys. That's why when I heard such things had been ramped up even further for the sequel, I skipped it.
