I see where your coming from dynamo. My bad I should have defined 2000 as a decade.

as for the last poster

Toshiba and HD-DVD honestly, visually and audio wise both are on par with each other I even give the edge to HD-DVD because of HDI and the ability to update the players with the latest firmware..something that only the PS3 is capable of doing right now for Blue.

My problem with Toshiba and HD-DVD is they did such a bad job of marketing the product ( or lack there of ). I mean all i ever heard was blue ray blue ray and blue ray.. on the net, my co-workers, at the electronic store at the water cooler ect...

It wasn't till i picked a HD-A3 ( got one at the beginning of the month for like 50 bucks ) that i actually stopped and said.. heck this is pretty decent player.

I have both the a blue ray ( ps3 ) and hd-dvd player and i purchased the hd-dvd player because of the movies available on it and not the format war.

I'll be glad when this war is over and i can purchase all my movies on blue ray ( or if a miracle happens HD-DVD).

Again cookies to Sony for a Marketing job well done.

And here's something else that should help...

PS3 to outsell 360 in Europe by summertime

Phil Elliott 12:16 (BST) 25/01/2008
Reeves reveals 1 million consoles were sold in PAL regions in December

Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 are on course to overtake Microsoft's Xbox 360 in Europe by the summer of this year, according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's president and CEO David Reeves.

According to Reeves the console is already outselling its rival in France, Spain, Germany and Italy, and over 1 million units were sold across the continent in the December build-up to Christmas last year.

On top of that, the latest numbers show Sony with a three-to-one advantage over the 360 in sales last week.

Reeves, talking to MCV, also explained that around a fifth of that number was down to the UK alone: "We're very happy with the performance of PS3 in the UK," he said.

He added that his company's console now had a higher cumulative installed base in some regions.

"It has not yet reached that in the UK. But the team here expect to overtake the installed base of Xbox 360 across all PAL territories in late summer.

"It's also worth mentioning that last week we outsold Xbox 360 in PAL territories by a ratio of three-to-one."

Momentum seems to be building for Sony's flagship console following a torrid time last year, as the effects of the price cut and increasing popularity of Blu-ray continue to kick in.

then with the with the coming of the console war

3)the PS3 had such a bad launch... i mean really bad

then the format war...

4) came after HD-DVD and was priced way higher.

Then...

With the help of Warner and the marketing magic of the new CEO of Sony America ( hint..he's not Japanese ).

They are about to win the format war. due to Marketing and pulling Warner to there side last minute before CES.

the prices of the ps3 have come down to a point anybody can buy them now. again both marketing the ps3 as a blue ray player and also all the great games coming out for the console this year and going forward.

because of these things there electronics department doing better and better ( well they where doing better in 2007 on there own anyway ). And appears to look like this will also trickle down to there other divisions...

I vote Sony as the greatest come back kid of 2000.

I know that you're a "refugee" from HD-DVD so I'll forgive you for this. Blu-ray has better technical specs than HD-DVD which is why I (and many others) chose Blu-ray and why I've bought so many Blu-ray videos. In turn, because so many folks were buying Blu-ray videos relative to HD-DVD videos Warner made the move to Blu-ray exclusivity. So it all started with a better technical spec and that is what triumphed (for once) and actually overcame Toshiba's (arguably) better marketing. Of course Sony was smart enough not to make the same stupid business mistakes that Toshiba did (such as pricing their players prematurely low so that no other CE manufacturer was attracted to HD-DVD to any significant degree). So Toshiba ended up being by its lonesome (except for Microsoft which is abandoning Toshiba quicker then a trick abandoning an ugly hooker) at the end.

You can celebrate, the war IS over. Toshiba lost. All activity you see now is like a chicken flapping about after its head has been cut off. The head is not going to be successfully re-attached. So buy all your movies on Blu-ray. The ones you can yet get on Blu-ray will be available down the road on Blu-ray.

Not all of Sony's divisions may have been hugely profitable in the last decade or so, but I would bet their gaming division pretty much made up for that. They dominated the market with the PS1 and PS2.

When assessing a company's viability, you need to look at the big picture.

Sony has made it's share of mistakes (rootkit, useless proprietary formats, etc.) but it's also done its share of good business. The same could be said about many other CE companies, Toshiba included.

Right now Sony is climbing the hill. The PS3 is finally starting to take off, Sony has secured Blu-ray as the winner in the format war, and they make the sexiest LCDs on the market (XBR). Toshiba on the other hand, is falling down the hill with the blunders of HD DVD and maybe even some of their other products (the Regza TV)

wipper regardless if i'm hd-dvd or blu... whats your point. why do you guys make this a vs. match. I have both formats all i care about are the movies and happy that this war is coming to an end.

I make few comments about hd-dvd and you lash out about blu superiority... I've already agreed that blu has won.

pull your panty out of your crack i'm not attacking you

its ok

maybe its about time you went and found a new hobby to fight over.

And it sounds amazing for the price!

Default Don't forget about OLED...

Don't forget about OLED...it may be barely a real product and super expensive, but the potential of solving LCD issues (like refresh rates) is looking really good. Not to mention even less power use. As for HD-DVD being beaten, I'm not really sure it will be UNTIL/IF most PC makers come out with Blu-ray. If a ton of new computers are put on the market with HD-DVD and the X-Box 360 comes with HD-DVD, then it will be much longer drawn out battle of the formats.
