Yes, my PS3 connected to the SR605 via HDMI sounds great. When I play a movie, I always select the English Uncompressed audio track and it always sounds better than the the Dolby 5.1 track.

And my bad for making it sound like the SR605 wasn't 7.1. I meant to say that since I did not have a 7.1 speaker set up, I didn't need the SR705's ability to take a 5.1 input and matrix it into a 7.1 signal. I believe that it either does a better job of this than the 605 or the 605 doesn't do it at all. Again, not important to me since I only have a 5.1 speaker set up.

I have a stupid question, I'm an audio noob too. I plan on buying the 605 soon, I currently have a 5.1 setup. Do I have to buy new speakers, or can I use my current ones? I'll buy 2 more speakers eventually, bit I don't have the cash right now to buy an extra set of speakers.

What type of speakers do you have? Do they meet the specs?

http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=...s=Receiver&p=s

If they do, then it shouldn't be a problem to get the rear surrounds later on, but keep in mind, the 605 doesn't expand/matrix an uncompressed 5.1 signal to 7.1, so you may want to consider the 705.

Thanks for the link.

Looks like it'll be awhile before I can upgrade. Any speaker suggestions that aren't obscenely expensive? Not too big either.

I'll let others chime in. I'm using an old JBL set that I'm happy with.

Default Onkyo 605 question

I am about to replace my old Denon AVR-3200 with an Onkyo 605 as soon as it arrives here from the U.S. For the meantime that I am set-up with only 5.1 speakers, connect it to my ps3 using HDMI cables and I play a BD encoded in PCM 7.1, will the audio encoded in the back rear speakers come out mixed with the left and right rear speakers at the sides? Thanks a lot for all who replies!

Default I owned the 705

I said this on every 605 vs 705 forum. Again

705 is superior than 605 cause of THX.. 705 has alot more surround sound mode than 605 and this is why some of us say that you can fake the 5.1 to 7.1 by using the surround mode "THX Natural 7.1" while watching PCM 5.1 or others.

Get the 705... i only paid $585.00 from Crutchfield.

Yes, I would say the 705 is worth the extra cash, the extra HDMI input is a bonus as well as all the sound options.

I bought the 605 and took it back and got the 705. The bass is much stronger on the 705 and the extra HDMI input is good to have. I think you would be much happier with the 705.

Couple reasons:
1) The 705 has one additional HMI port over the 605.
2) The 605 has a very common problem specific to the 605 model in which you will randomly get "popping" sounds on a random speaker at a random volume.
If you get a 605, you may or may not have this problem, but it is very common and something to be aware of before purchasing.

My only complaint with either model is that it only upconverts component inputs for 720 hdmi out. this means you will only have 720 if using your hdmi out even if the incoming component signal is 1080. I have three devices in ym theater, my blu-ray, my appletv, and my cable box. all of which are high def, this means at least one of them would have been downgraded to 720 because there are only 2 hdmi inputs. With the 705 I can use hdmi for all the connections. and keep my 1080 picture quality for all my components.
YOu confused the heck out of me. I just bought the 705, hadnt opened it yet, but now I'm seeing you say this and that about 720. Answer me this one question. I have a PS3 using HDMI. If I connect my HDMI from PS3 to the 705, will I still be able to see a 1080p picture quality or no? Or will I be reduced to 720p?

No, what he is saying is this...

If you connect any of your A/V components (DVD player, satellite, PS3, Xbox360, etc) using COMPONENT CABLES (the red/green/blue), the receiver will only upconvert the video from that connection to 720p.

The Onkyo 805 on the other hand, will take ALL connections (Composite [yellow], S-Video, and Component) and upconvert those to 1080p, so long as the receiver is outputting all of those video signals through an HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV.

So, with any A/V unit connected to the 705 (including the PS3) with an HDMI cable, and the receiver connected to the TV with an HDMI cable, you will be getting a 1080p video output. Any other connection into the receiver will only be output to the TV at 720p.

I bought the 605 a few weeks back, cause I am on a budget and spending more didn't fit into that. I didn't know anything about speaker specs just assumed my would transfer from my dvd-a/v receiver to a new a/v receiver. They work so the point is moot as to whether they fit the specs or not I guess.

I do not think this is true. I did not think the 805 WILL take other connections and upscale them to 1080P via HDMI to the TV. Thats only found in 875 or higher models. I could be wrong but thats what I thought I read.

Also if you run lets say the Xbox 360 to the 605 705 or 805 with component and run component to the TV you will get 1080P the ONLY time it will down grade the single if you run component to the Reciever and the HDMI to the TV.

Hope that makes since.

Just an out of topic question on the 705 (or 605), does the Audyssey MultEQ XT room calibration works great?

I read a review of the 875 and it praised the room calibration, so I was wondering if it did the trick for any of you guys?

Thanks! ; )

My 805 manual says it upconverts all input sources through the HDMI out to 1080p. I haven't actually tested that with the TVs display bar though. I only have an Xbox360 connected without HDMI, so I may have used it once since November.

Well, I checked it out. With my only non-HDMI connected unit (CrapBox3FixMe) it is coming through as 720p. I could swear that my receiver manual told me that the 805 upconverted to 1080p.

Oh well, it doesn't matter to me anyways. I don't care the least bit about my 360 and everything else I use in my home theatre will ALWAYS be connected via HDMI. So, it will always be 1080p for me no matter what.
