Nothing magical at all, if you read the thread and see post 16.

I assume that's what he's referring to, because I don't recall seeing the 4k part earlier, and would have responded differently in my earlier post.

I think the next format will have more colours and possibly higher frame rates, maybe with 3d. I'm not sure what the maximum resolution might be (but my guess would be within 0.2 to 7 years)

HD media is about 1% of the market & only about 32% of US households have a HDtv & most are not hooked-up to ANY hd source.

BD will be around for about 10 years AFTER bd has become the norm. so maybe 15-18 years until it is dead

For the US, this is definitely true. Look how long it took just to add color to the dollar bill and come next year we move to digital tv...

I think the biggest problem for moving to a "higher resolution" is going to be that...look how long it took broadcast television standards to change, and ATSC doesn't even allow for 1080p. I find it hard to believe that they're going to be willing to go through another change in 10 or 20 years.

Now, that's not to say that TV's won't be out to support 2k or 4k, but adoption will be slow (much like HD adoption has been, but if television standards aren't changing, I think it'll be even slower). It'll be like the uphill battle that current HDM has, but worse.

One may only need to get a new tv for digital OTA only or they can get a converter box & keep there old tv. The digital switch next year will not affect anyone that is using cable or satellite since they are already digital.

The NEXT broadcast standard is SHV (8K) and it's supposed to start airing in Japan in 2025 which means 2040 in North America and a decade for decent adoption until a "new format" is released. See you in 2050.

If DVD came out in the 60's it would have lasted for 40+ years because the resolution of the broadcasts have NOT changed between 1960-1998.

HDTV will be the BEST broadcast available between 1998-204X.

Enjoy your Blu-Ray's and STOP starting these idiotic threads every week.
While I'm not sure that revenue could keep up on Blu-ray for 30 years (there's only so many times you can double dip), it sure would be nice not to have to think about another format for a long time.

I'd not heard that 8K is supposed to hit Japan by 2025, but that's interesting news. Would be nice to skip up right over 4k. Can't even imagine what it would look like though. How big of a screen would you need to take advantage of that? 100 inches or more? It just doesn't seem like the average person would have room for an 100" screen. I also can't imagine what older.

And all this talk about downloads possibly being next seems to get less and less likely if you actually want the next generation to have improved visuals and audio. I mean we already can't handle mass downloads of Blu-ray quality - unless compression techniques really advance, I can't imagine ever being able to download 8K resolution stuff. And there's no way I'd switch to downloads of Blu-ray quality - well, I'd certainly not double dip anyway and that's a huge revenue generator.

If they can keep blu-ray going 30 years though, I'd say there'd be a better chance to not have to have the next players be backwards compatible (kind of like VHS). It would be nice to have a physically smaller storage medium IMO.

anyway - to the original poster. I'd say minimum lifespan for Blu ray is 10 years, and that's long enough for me. If someone told me DVDs would have only lasted 10 years, I would have still bought them. I can say though, that with each new format, there will be less and less catalog purchases for me as they'll most likely be reduced gains.

There's no 1080p in over the air HD broadcasts. Yet we have it on Blu-Ray.

I mainly bought my HDTV for the high-def movies. Movies are what drive home theater sales, not TV broadcasts. Things like Blu-Ray would have gone nowhere otherwise.

As far as 4K goes, I agree no one should expect 4K movie discs and TVs anytime soon. Perhaps 2020, if ever.

Nevertheless, Sony, JVC and other electronics companies are developing 4K digital projection for commercial movie theaters. They're still dealing with technological challenges though. Many film industry people believe 4K does better justice in representing 35mm film negatives than 2K.

Unfortunately few movies currently have their digital intermediates and CGI rendered at 4K quality levels. Most are only 2K -mainly because 2K takes a lot less time to render. Everything will have to go 4K to provide visible benefits through 4K projection hardware. A 4K movie disc format won't get anywhere without lots of 4K quality movies to play.

If or when 4K digital projection becomes very common in commercial movie theaters then well heeled home theater enthusiasts will be demanding it. Digital technology originally intended for movie theaters eventually gets redirected into the much more lucrative consumer market. Again, I just don't think 4K in the home is going to be happening anytime soon.

I read somewhere that a 100GB Blu-ray Disc could hold upto 3 hours of a 2K definition movie.

Provided it can physically fit into the consumer's home! Lots of people can accommodate a 40" or 50" 1080p HDTV; how many have space for a ten- or twelve-foot screen which can show off the 4k res?

A few niche hardware manufacturers will surely cater for this puny ultra-high-end market, but software is another story. What's the incentive for the studios to release 4K movies for home consumption if almost no one is able to enjoy them? Unless they go the Laserdisc route of trying to charge a couple hundred bucks a title -- and even in that case there wouldn't be many titles to collect.

That is the spuditest thing i've EVER heard (except for all the idiotic dudder comments on avs and hdd).

1080i and 1080P both SHARE THE SAME RESOLUTION AND SAME TV SETS!

If you want to argue that there might one day be a movie format that uses 16 bit color, 4:4:4 and xvYCC color space and is still 1080P... maybe... but the next resolution format will come with the next broadcast resolution format (8K 2040-2050) END OF STORY!

if you would not jump all over people you would see that someone changed my title and i made a statement above you post about this, so please lay off.

still have no answer as to why people are allowed to change your titles? i dont think people should do this without the OP permission at the very least. i think it is very rude and i dont appreciate it . and look what it does, it gets someone else ranting to me on something i did not write in the first place.

come on guys!!!!

I allready appologized in my post #20 in this thread

I know what you mean by changing the title of the thread... the mods did it to me today also in my thread about Yahoo recommending HD DUD players to wives as Valentine's day presents for their husbands... My thread was orginaly titled "Yahoo soon to be the cause of many divorces" and the smilies and sarcasm was all messed up in my post when they changed the title of the thread (I caught it and edited my comments so they would make sense).

I share your pain
