I think I'm going to go back the Best Buy and raise Holy Hell with the salesman - that Sony Reciever (the SS2200) was the one I went in to get... they just didn't have it in stock. I'll make him give it to me at a discount and ship it from wherever it IS in stock.

If not - the Sony DG720 looks like a great alternative, albeit a little pricier.

I think I'd be going with what the manual said - I'm sure it's just HDMI pass-through...

Food for thought.

Here is the yamaha page.

http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/p...9&CTID=5000300

They seem to be wording it akwardly. I would call their technical support, because it does not say that it won't accept audio signals via hdmi, it just states that it won't output audio via hdmi. Which is kind of weird. Most of the time when they say passthrough they mean that it won't read the audio signal, not that it won't send to an external device.

From the manual:

"Audio signals input at the HDMI jack are not output from any speaker terminals but output from the connected video monitor. To enjoy the sound from speakers connected to the unit,
- make an analog or digital connection besides the HDMI connection
- mute the volume of the connected monitor"

Does that imply that it's simply a pass-through. Serisouly, like I said, I'm usually good with this stuff, but this one passage is throwing me for a huge loop. I can't quite get my head around all this audio stuff.

Thanks for the info though.

I took it to mean it won't output audio (HDMI) to your speakers -- it'd pass it through where it's gotta be re-routed back to the receiver in some way (typical pass-through setup).

If there a receiver that'll do lossless for under $250 like that, that's incredible...!

I'd like to know for sure; the wording on these things STILL confuses me sometimes...

That is definitely a pass-through setup.

You have the receiver, right? Just not hooked up?

That is the typical explanation for pass-through. Much clearer than their website.

Right, that's what I figured it meant. That was the basis for my original question regarding the output of PCM in 5.1, (which has been very clearly answered by you and the other members of this forum, thanks again).

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused by this. I think I'll keep trying for the sony all-in-one SS2200. I'll make them throw in Blade Runner on Blue Ray for my troubles.

Yeah, it's sitting in the box - I pulled the instructions out to read at work and figure out what cables I needed to order on Amazon.

Yeah, that's how I read it too. So, we've decided that this one needs to go back for sure (if I want uncompressed audio - which I definitely do).

Cool. Was just going to say if there's still any doubt, hook up a speaker to that bad boy and see what it'll do. Just one would do, I'm sure.

I don't think it's necessary, though. I'm pretty sure that won't do HDMI audio. Hard to understand language on a website is one thing, but that manual seemed pretty dead-on...

Thanks! I had actually been there before, but I forgot the URL. Very good prices on cables!

Yeah, they made it pretty clear. Thanks for all your help. I'm sure I'll be around the forums with more questions (and advice as I get more experience with Blu-ray.)

Ha, ironically I was watching the Blu-Ray Final Cut of Blade Runner that arrived earlier today when I started messing around with the audio a little bit and decided to go online and see what the optimal audio settings were for my rig. I have the Sony SS2200 AV Receiver and have been very pleased with its performance.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but what are the optimal settings using the PS3 with that Sony receiver? I had the PS3 set to automatically select the optimal sound output and while watching the film I hit display and it said Dolby Digital 5.1 48 khz at 640 kbps. It is being output to my receiver in Linear PCM. Is the PS3 decoding the audio signal into Dolby Digital and passing that information along to my receiver or am I missing something? The PS3 is basically outputting the strongest signal my receiver can handle, according to the user manual. Since the disc is encoded in Dolby Digital and Dolby True HD, is there any way to tell which Dolby audio codec the PS3 is decoding? I apologize if this is a frequent question. I simply stumbled on this thread and decided to register and post because of the Blade Runner coincidence and wound up typing much more than I originally intended and asking the question that brought me here in the first place and that I meant to research (darn fingers). Sorry to be such a noob. I'm sure the info I'm looking for is a click or two away. If not, maybe one of you guys know the answer.

With a multichannel-in HDMI receiver, set it to Linear PCM and you're done.

Yes, that's what it is doing.

Press SELECT on the PS3 controller or remote.

Blade Runner and other Warner discs default to Dolby Digital. If you want to listen to Dolby TrueHD, bring up the Pop-up Menu then change the audio tracks under Languages.
