If they cut the scenes ... there was likely a reason to do so.

Extended movies are very hit or miss. I like some and I really don't like others.

The Blu Ray will contain the film as seen in theaters in the best possible viewing format so if you like the movie it's worth buying.

(I'm netlixing it but if I like it I'll buy it.)

Wasn't planning on getting it in the first place. There is nothing worse than having one movie of a tilogy and then not having the other two movies get made. If the sequels aren't announced soon, I doubt they will get made or they will have to find a different actress to play Lyra.

Anyway, the movie tanked in the US. Did it even break even with its international box office? The movie was $180 million flop.

my brother works at best buy, and the extra disc is no more than a small behind the scenes documentary, most of which have already been shown. There are no deleted scenes on the extra disc!!! I CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY Blu-Ray COPY!

TOTAL LIFETIME GROSSES
Domestic: $70,107,728 18.9%
+ Foreign: $300,695,060 81.1%
= Worldwide: $370,802,788

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/...dencompass.htm

So it flopped ONLY in the US, very successful everywhere else.

I paid $28 for TGC from Amazon (no tax plus free ship). I just checked BB and the package is selling for $30 plus tax. I don't care about deleted scenes or any of the extras. Rather, just give me the movie with the best possible PQ and SQ. BB is charging a small premium for the extra disc but I’d rather order online and save some money.

However, I considered returning TGC because I also agree with Bill Hunt that this practice from Warner/BB stinks of greed. Unfortunately it is too late to cancel my order because the status is “shipping soon.” At this point I would have rather waited for a better deal.

I'm with you. Sure, I wouldn't mind the extras, but my primary concern is the movie in the best PQ and AQ possible. I'm picking this up - although with a few coupons (geez, I feel like Pinoy saying this) I'll be able to purchase it for $19.99.

You can get it on iTunes. The first is the Golden Compass. The second is the Subtle Knife. The last is the Amber Spyglass.
Sure they cost as much or more than the Blu-ray, but you get the entire story, and it lasts much longer.
Imagination has no resolution, only your own limitations.
Or, you can check the audio books out at the public library, which is FREE.

I only listened to the first two. I thought the second was boring as hell.

The main concern on this one for me is the apparent use of DNR. Is this another case where fake PiP required such a low bitrate that DNR had to be used? What a colossally misplaced priority.

I'm just buying it for Nicole.

I doubt the extras for this movie are going to involve Her in any kind of various stages of undress, so I could give a crap.

This is simply going on the shelf for the Nicole Sub-Collection.

I DO, however, genuinely appreciate this post. People who DO care should know these things before they pre-order or buy something.

No, the studio cut them to try to fit in more shows per day. It was a post director's cut hack job. It's like Kingdom of Heaven, but far worse.

I paid $22.47 through Warner Bros. (with the 25% discount code) so even if I want to upgrade to an extended cut of the film, I will be able to recoup most of my cost and I didn't have to bother with the rental.

I'm still buying it. I've had it on pre-order from Amazon for over a month. The Best Buy exclusive disc is like many of BB's exclusives- it contains content that you can only get when you purchase the movie from Best Buy.

This is no exception. If you want the extra content that badly then go buy the Best Buy exclusive standard DVD. Duh.

I would really like to see a Director's Cut for this movie, but that will only happen in a few years. Made up my mind to buy the movie anyways. The thing that upset me the most was thinking that the special edition DVD was going to get the directors cut, but what it is getting is the deleted scenes (I still would like to watch those). Anyways, studios will double dip anyways. For those in doubt there is another movie coming. Although the US boxoffice was a disappointment (Newline), the producers made lot of $$$ from overseas.

So Bill Hunt had a fit over something that really didn't matter anyway. Heh.

Like I said, I figured it was simply going to be fluff. They wouldn't release the deleted scenes because they want to get people to double dip for the extended cut when the next movie hits theaters.

The ad says "with over 45 minutes of extra footage"

Ads can be deceptive. Just look at Target which often words the ad so it sounds like they're getting exclusive extras, when they're just selling the same DVD as everyone else. That's been the most obvious case of deceptive ads. Just because it says it has extra footage does not mean it has deleted scenes.
