Default Best Buy's Golden Compass bonus footage disc - DVD only!

I was looking forward to get the Golden Compass tomorrow but because these bastards greedy studios, I will have to wait until for the proper Blu-Ray edition is release. Here's what Bill Hunt over at the Digital Bits Had to say:

And here's one more thing that's going to drive some of you crazy: We've learned that Best Buy is going to have an exclusive bonus disc with New Line's The Golden Compass: 2-Disc Platinum Edition on Tuesday, featuring "over 45 minutes worth of extra footage." In other words, it would seem, deleted scenes. The deleted scenes that aren't yet being restored to the movie itself... and which aren't included on the Blu-ray Disc version. Which means, there's going to be a double-dip one of these days (probably when the sequels show up in theatres, which we hear WILL happen because Compass made so much money internationally, even though it hasn't yet been officially announced). What's more, to our knowledge, the bonus disc is only available with the DVD version. In other words, if you're a Blu-ray fan... yes, you ARE getting screwed. You know, we don't mind retailer exclusives like special packaging or swag items, but when ACTUAL CONTENT is only available at a particular retailer - especially something this interesting to fans of the film - that just sucks. Period. Whoever made this decision at New Line or Warner should know better.

All right, anyway. Some things just piss a guy off. As a fan of movies on disc, you hate feeling like you're being taken advantage of, you know?

I didn't intend on buying Golden Compass, but something like this motivates me even more to keep my money in my wallet.

Haven't seen the movie, but have read that there is no directors cut with the extended scenes as the article states.

I'm having flashbacks of when DVD's were released, then re-released with better pic more extras...

The studios are cranking the $$$ machine

I was on the fence about buying this BD, but now after reading your post I believe my mind is made up. I'm better served grabbing some older blus that I've been wanting instead.

Not planning on it. What you SHOULD buy is the audiobook narrated by the author himself with a full vocal cast. They made all 3 books and they are great! I listen to them at work when my mind doesn't need to concentrate on anything important (like work )
You can get it on iTunes. The first is the Golden Compass. The second is the Subtle Knife. The last is the Amber Spyglass.
Sure they cost as much or more than the Blu-ray, but you get the entire story, and it lasts much longer.
Imagination has no resolution, only your own limitations.

They're screwing up a movie which should've been done right to begin with.

Thank you for posting this information. I had pre-ordered it from Amazon, but then I cancelled it last week after reading more and more negative feedback on the movie itself. I will wait for it to come on HBO HD (or similar HD channel). I will not rent. I hate greasy, germ encrusted rentals.

I refuse to pay $28 for the movie so waiting is a no brainer for me.

Good to know there are deleted scenes and content not being released tomorrow.

Still going to buy it. Most of the time those 'Bonus Discs' are just fluff anyway.

I am not a big fan of extra, but NOT including the deleted scenes in the Blu-ray version stinks My nephew is coming to my house to see the movie on Saturday, so I will have to bite the bullet and buy the movie. Anyways...

I'm with you. I don't think I ever watch the bonus content with the Blu's I have now. I do like the extended cut of most movies though.

if you like the movie in theaters buy the darn disc. You never know if you'll like the extended cut anyway. Look at Narnia, the extended cut was worse than the theatrical cut!!! if you don't like the movie why are you buying it neway??

There are some movies that benefit from extended cuts, but couldn't agree with you more, that some movies actually are worse, Punisher extended cut was worse I believe than the theatrical release. I think if companies even think about an extended cut, they should do like the Blade Runner release and give us a choice of which to watch.

I haven't seen this, will be a rental this week.

I'll buy both this theatrical cut, and the eventual extended cut.

Just like I did with LOTR.

Where's the problem, really?

Blade runner was one of my best buys. 5 versions of the film and 2 discs of special features all for the price of one new release. Seriously, Warner outdid themselves with that one.

Wow...the movie sucked to begin with but this just puts the icing on it....

I refuse to buy this movie.

Hopefully a lot of people will complain to them. And it will be rereleased soon,...

I really don't see why Bill Hunt is getting his panties in a bunch. This stuff happens all the time. In most cases I really don't enjoy watching stand-alone deleted scenes anyway. I am willing to wager that an extended cut will be released at some point in the future just as New Line did with The Lord of the Rings trilogy on DVD. The Golden Compass will be in my grimy hands later today since I ordered it from Warner and they shipped early. If I like it I will probably be buying the extended version as well but that is at least a couple of years away.
