Heck, why should that slow down the CEs and studios?

Say HDTV adoption gets up to 55 or 60 %. Go ahead, enough already, start pulling the plug on DVD.

"But but but ... I don't have an HDTV yet!"

"No worries, just set the "Video output" on your BD standalone or Playstation 3 to "480i" and off you go."

"But but but ... I don't want to buy an extra player or PS3 just so I can see the latest releases; I want the latest releases out on good ol' DVD just like they used to be."

"I'm sorry. I cannot help you."

Well, I will tell you I have a 7.1 surround sound room and I still do not have a blu-ray player. I have been waiting for the format war to end (even though I knew HD-DVD was dead before it started), the movies librabry to increase, and profile 2.0 players to come out.

My S-DVDs look just fine for now upscaled to 1080i. I want my Blue player to decode all and be the final (or 1.1) spec. Never buy version 1.0 of anything is my rule.

I will have one by the end of the summer. I already have informed my home theater installer what all I want them to do when they come back to install it in the rack.

And for the record, I have 20 or so ready in my Amazon wish list. Most of them are the DVDs I never purchased due to the lack of effort put into the DVDs (read 2001 & Full Metal Jacket).

PS3 or Panasonic DMP-BD50

...both can decode every format and are 2.0 compliant.

by the way, what 7.1 Receiver do you have?

...oh, and feel free to post some pics of your *Home Theater*.

We'd love to see it!

I guess I don't agree with this question ultimately. When J6p catches a glimpse of HD on all channels in Feb, 09 and see the PQ in stores and at friend's homes with HD TV, the next logical step for home movies will be HD as well.

Like most of us spoiled by HD, we can hardly stomach non HD PQ and SQ anymore.

Lack of a HDTV, belief that the players/movies are too expensive, and ignorance .

There are still tons of people who don't even know what blu ray is. At my local Blockbuster when you rent a blu ray movie they still ask every single time "Do you have blu ray player?" because people rent them and can't figure out why they won't play in their dvd player and take it out on the poor Blockbuster guys. They even have a blu-ray display and they sell PS3s in the store, but people are oblivious.

I also notice that the Circuit City and Best Buy ads in my Sunday paper talk up high definition but not blu ray players; occasionally they mention the PS3 but I think that confuses people (I know, it is an ENTERTAINMENT system, NOT a GAMING system )

I think the TV networks should volunteer to educate people on both high definition and surround sound.

i dont see anything wrong with fancy gyms and season tickets (human interaction is actually a good thing).

THEY DON'T CARE!!

It's not the money. SDDVD's look just fine on the old 13" or 20" tube. Look, most of the people I interact with daily can afford to put a high end home theater in their homes. A minority are interested in high-definition anything, much less television. I know of more who don't have televisions than have Blu-ray players.

No real pics yet.

Quick summary (room installed Feb 2007 so some of the units are dated by today's standards):

B&W speakers (7.1) in wall mounted
B&W Sub (10 inch?)
Pioneer Elite VSX-82TXS reciever
Pioneer Eilite DV-46AV DVD player
All rack mounted, professional wired while room was at studs

Sony 1080P projector

90 inch screen
2 rows of seating (3 in front, 4 raised in back), full recline

I plan to get the newly announced Pioneer 05 Elite BR player unless a 2.0 verision in announced within the month. Never wanted a PS3 for the movie room as it is just not my thing. Waiting on the Pioneer units @ 1.1 or 2.0.

Been awhile since I last posted a comment. Figure I would throw my 2 cents in.

Considering the format war ended 3 months ago, many did not run out a storm the stores for blu-ray players. Considering Universal, Paramont and other smaller studios just came on board within the past month, thousands and thousands of blu-rays haven't been produce yet. Only a small portion of facility can manufacture blu-ray at the moment to the hundreds of DVD facilities around.

The technology is slowy gaining its way into comsumers homes. Its not going to happen over night. A big role player is MONEY. Many people have DVD, SD-TVs and don't even have SS receivers. Many usually replace these things when they go bad. DVD is so cheap now, Yes but it took it what 6-7 years for it to become this cheap and widely adopted. VHS just finally started disappearing 2 years ago even though you can still buy the combo players and blank tapes at Wal-Mart, BB, CC etc.

Yes if the person doesn't have a HDTV, they can still purchase a BD player and watch the movies on their SDTV. But in order for that to happen, the person or family has to dish out $400-$500 dollars at the moment to get started. To alot of people, thats quite a bit of money. Thats their grocery and gas money for a month.

I for one would rather buy groceries and eat while watching a SD movie on a SD TV rather than starve while watching a HD movie on my SD TV.

The whole "good enough" statment can be thrown around for just about anything. How come everyone don't drive BMW's or are their fords "good enough" How come they don't live in big ass houses or are their apartments "good enough"? How come people don't have personal chefs or is cooking for themself/eating out "good enough"? How come people don't have 100" display or are their 26" display "good enough"???

Lets face it, DVD will be around for the next 3-4 years, 5 years from now Blu-ray will be cheap and widely adopted with just about every title avalible. The big question is when that happens, what format will you be buying into next? Sure the next one will be comming faster than last one.

Oh and yes, I do have BD but still buy some DVD's mainly for 2 reasons..A) not on BD yet...B) not worth owning on BD at the price

BB and CC only promote the PS3 so they can open the doors to the games AND blu-rays. They make the money off the media, not the actual hardware. Selling a player only is like selling half an item

Cool

As long as they are working, people will spend the money if they want it badly enough.

Hence, when Transformers was released on HD DVD, it actually spurred sales of HD DVD players. Now that we can expect Transformers on blu-ray as of Tue 9/2/08 that could spur a surge of interest in BD players and sales. Along with any other movie titles with a cult-like following.

I hope blu ray get's the better of HD DVDs. Although, i think sony is capable enough to market their product better. So i'm putting my bet on Blu Ray to come out on top of the HD medium race.

Eh? Have you been living in a cave somewhere? HD DVD is dead, Blu-ray already won some time ago!

When I asked my moms b/f why he has not put any money out for a BD player these are his exact words. " The reason why is the cost of the bluray player. Also DVD is fine because unlike VHS I dont have to rewind it and VHS film stretches and rips if played to much." I told him that some bluray players cost as much as DVD players when they came out and he said " I will just wait after the price drops"

1.MONEY, THAT is THE big reason.
2.While you and I may have an HDTV, most peole do not. Even with everything being brodcasted digital next year, people wil still use their old TV's with a converter box.

How long did it take for DVD to really become affordable and pretty much standard? We live in a world where people have lost all patience and want things now( I am one of them). But i'm also realistic.

My dad still watches movies on VHS on a projection TV from 1984. If he can see it then whats the big deal. My parents do no make even close to alot of money so hey are content with what they have. That is also something that people have lost.

I grew up hating bootleg copies of movies and copies of copies or TV's that were missing the edges. I LOVE HI DEF.

It will take time but it will happen. But if prices on players and movies do not drop pretty significantly, then it will take alot more time.

Wow, I hope someone's paying you for that kind of evangelism.

you should be supporting the best tech out there. That's blu-ray for now, but only with respect to image quality. It's inferior to streaming and even to DVDs with respect to accessibility and convenience.

As soon as iTunes starts cranking out 35mps streams of my favorite movies, I'll likely be saying goodbye to Blu.

How long did it take for DVD to become a standard, a few years at least. New technologies that start out expensive will not sell well toward the beginning. Think about it, when did you buy your first DVD player? I bought my first DVD player a couple of years after it came out.
