I have nothing against the title. I like Steve Martin from this time period.

But they need to be releasing Jurassic Park and ET if they want to make a difference.

These titles are nice catalogue titles for sure... but really they are not going to help HD DVD much.

What are the other three... Brokeback Mountain, Half Baked and... Hollywoodland.

Actually I kinda liked Hollywoodland. Not sure I would buy it though.

According to someone on AVS, The Jerk will be a Combo...! OMG...

Those folks at Universal sure have a sense of humour...

Don't get me wrong, it is an interesting title. But, it is still funny to think of it from the eyes of an HD DVD fanboy.

Just wait for CES!
(crickets)
Umm, OK. It's OK. Amir says don't worry, so just wait until an announcement!
(The Jerk and The Game)
And?....

There is some indication that Microsoft was tuning the VC-1 encoder on a title by title basis for Universal. So, it may be Amir giving HIS people a break over the holidays that is the cause of all this.

It seems clear this may be one of those video card driver/C compiler scams where the code is tuned for the benchmarks, and isn't really capable of performance in the general case.

Warner and Paramount lost this support, of course, by not declaring hatred to BD.

No No No

They are insistant that half the titles no longer need Microsoft attention at all!

Half!

Apparently the studios are now expert enough users that they can encode half of their movies without Microsoft's help...

(How would you feel about having to have the software writers help you with half of the work you are supposed to be doing?)

Sorry for the rant...

Yeah, I just don't know what it up with Universal. I would love to find out though.

Maybe it is something really big... though I wonder what they could be waiting for to talk about it.

Maybe they want to spring it with no warning...

heheh...

I love The Jerk. It was on UniversalHD recently and looked good but it won't look pristine. Or rather, it shouldn't look clean and pristine. It did look far better than the DVD however.

Keep 'em coming Universal, give me more content to watch on UHD...

Not only are the titles not awe-inducing, but they're coming out THREE months from now. I think they're seriously trying to kill off their own format.

Is it normal for Universal to just announce two titles at one time?

How much does it cost to convert a movie? Uni has something like a 200k market. I am curious if they actually have made any money off their HD-DVD titles. It could be they have a very small budget.

oh I agree that The Game is an excellent film, no doubt. The Jerk is pretty funny too, but they should be trying to knock everyone's socks off, lure new people into the fold and make all those who went BD like me envious.
I'm not.

Considering how the argument from CES to now was how Universal guards the titles and doesn't announce them until soon before release, announcing three months before does seem to blow yet another HD DVD fanboy comfort point out of the water.

Can we assume nothing more will be announced for release before April? So, basically nothing from Universal until mid-Spring at the earliest while the claim is 300 titles by the end of 2007.

Neat trick.

No worries. HD DVD could release 50 titles and the end-of-year assessment would be that they once again under promised and over delivered. It is the Look and Sound of Perfect Delusion.

That AaronSCH guy put it best. One zealot replied asking if more movies would be announced, he replied saying "Maybe next week, universal will announce its December 07 titles next". Seriously, first all the "insiders" say that they will start releasing titles RIGHT before they ship, then this happens. Honestly, i think everyone in the hd-dvd camp knows universal is about to go neutral and they are doing whatever they can to keep people supporting hd-dvd for as long as they can.

Since you go to the BDA meetings and talk to many of the BDA members so often.. Has universal made any noise here? Do you or anyone you know in the BDA talk to universal? No one is discounting The Jerk and The Game, but they are not system sellers, and universal made a old movie like The Jerk into a combo, i think just to piss off hd-dvd owners even more. There has to be a flurry of activity going on behind the scenes, SPILL IT!!!

I read that earlier as well. All I can say is we'll see. Right now HD-DVD supporters had BETTER hope that Universal simply 'overlooked' the negative effects of the lack of new release announcements had on their core supporters.

IMO, I doubt it though.

That's rather encouraging. What happened to exclusive in 2007? And before that it was "Universal destroys Blu-ray" where they said they'd never support Blu-ray.

Each time they answer the question it more hopeful for neutrality!

Not at this time. How about next month?

It is unusual that they list Beerfest and Wicker Man as Universal in that article - I believe that they are Warner and will be on BD as well.

Huh...that's weird. You're right both are pre-selling for Blu-Ray.

This is what caught my eye:
"The Game will retail for about $30, while The Jerk will be $35 because of the added cost of the combo format."

So much for throwing the pricing issue at Blu-Ray. I wonder how much Total-HD will be going for?

Folks, no matter how much FUD, stall tactics, and smoke and mirrors you may run into on this subject, just keep this very simple and plain truth in your mind at all times.

Universal wants to make money and make a profit.

Even as is, they cannot and will not do this is they stay confined to HD-DVD.

That's all there is to it. If their suits have a modicum of good business sense, which thus far I've been forced to have serious doubts about, I don't see them letting the next holiday season go by and not have some BD discs out there by then if not sooner.

They continue to ignore and avoid BD only at their own harm and peril.
