Your Logitech Z680 will work just fine with the PS3. You will need to connect it to your PS3 via a TOSLink optical cable. Then configure your PS3 to output audio over optical and turn on Dolby Digital and/or DTS in the audio options. Set Blu-ray/DVD playback to bitstream audio. Your Z680 will not support HD audio codecs available on Blu-ray discs such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. However, these advanced codecs are optional, and all Blu-rays will play on your Z680 in surround sound. If you want to upgrade to better sound quality than your Z680 can provide, you'll want to pick up a 7.1 receiver set which supports HDMI audio. Beware that cheaper receivers which claim HDMI support often only have HDMI pass through... they can not actually play the HDMI audio to the speakers. It's just an HDMI switch. Receivers which can actually receive HDMI audio are generally more expensive. I wouldn't recommend buying a receiver to connect to your Z680 speakers. It probably wouldn't make much difference. If you're going to spend money on upgrading, do it right. My recommendation is to hook up your current Z680 system as I have described above. It will work just fine. If you're satisfied with how it sounds, then go with it. It should sound pretty good. If you want better sound than that, then you're going to be stepping up into buying a serious audio system. And that's going to cost a lot more than $500-$600. Don't just buy another cheap system which might be marginally better or try to cobble something. Either step up for real or don't. It will cost you a lot less money in the long run. |

This would be a decent HTiB system that handles HDMI audio. However, the speakers probably won't be any better than what you already have with the Z680 sytem. Save your money and just buy an Onkyo 606 (with HD audio decoding) or Sony STR-DG720 (no onboard decoding, but accepts HDMI audio). The Sony is cheaper, and is all you'll need with a PS3, since the PS3 decodes HD audio.

thing with speakers though, is they technically last a lifetime.
all of them are the standard copper wires that go into receivers, it's the receiver that needs to be updated as new inputs come out. maybe it's a good investment to buy a decent set of speakers (like the Klipsch References series) that'll last you 30 years. |

It's similar, yes, but why pay for the receiver and speakers when you already have speakers that are most likely just as good as the ones that come with the HTiB? Get either the Onkyo or the Sony I referenced earlier, and then save-up for a decent set of speakers to eventually upgrade the ones you have. You don't need speakers, now, so don't throw $$ away on meh speakers that come with the HTiB.

There's not a lot of point in trying to get Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio to play over cheap speakers.
It's like putting premium gasoline in your Honda Civic. It just costs more and does nothing. Only a real sports car with a high compression engine can benefit from the better gas. Really... you're better off either getting serious about upgrading or not upgrading at all. If you want better sound, and you go with these vague half upgrades now, you're still not going to be satisfied in the end. Eventually you'll come to realize that you just have to lay down the money on a serious sound system. And all the money you spent for inbetween stuff in the meantime will have been a total waste because you'll just throw that out in the end. If you want better than you already have, save up your money and go straight to the sound system you want in the end. It will cost you a lot less and happen a lot sooner. |
