Not according to my owners manual or the list of audio options in the sound setting's menu. In fact the owners manual quite clearly states that the PS3 does NOT decode 7.1 DTS. Maybe it's just the 40GB model I've got.

Depends on wether they updated the manual or how old your manual is. The PS3 when launched did not support DTS-HD MA decoding but that was introduced in a firmware update. ALL PS3 models have had DTS-HD MA 7.1 decoding for a long time now.

Taken from
http://uk.playstation.com/help-suppo...28ver-2-30%29/
Introduced in firmware 2.30
Blu-ray Disc playback now supports DTS-HD Master Audio™ and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio™ output.*

Introduced firmware in 2.40
For DTS playback on DVD-Video and Blu-ray Disc media, DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 for DVD-Video and DTS-ES Matrix for Blu-ray Discs are now supported.

I would like to see Dolby Digital 5.1 EX decoding added to the PS3 now.

It does it. I have the same model. Just make sure you got your updates.

I think it works. I'm not sure but should. It just shows you Multichannle. Same with DTS ES.
Could be wrong on that.

Back to topic

I will get in the future a standalone player. Just to give the playstation a brake ones in a while and for PQ/AQ updates as well. But for now i'm still happy. DVD upscaling is also a point the new models should improve and work on. I think.

Do they new blu-ray players boot up as fast as the PS3 and start movies quickly or is there a terrible wait time still?

I chose the PS3 for a few reasons. I stream media files to it from a NAS box I got a couple of games on PS3 I wanted and it was a blu-ray player so it was an all in one.

But unlike me not everyone wants a gaming machine for a blu-ray player despite at the time this was the best player out there. My parents did not want a PS3 nor did other people I know.

It was only a matter of time before manufuctures would lower the price point and start producing better players. Manufuctures had most certainly lost out to the PS3 so far.

Manufuctures for blu-ray players now have had plenty of time to improve there products and offer better load times, better picture and sound and sort out compatability issues. Remember they want blu-ray to succed and replace DVD so they need to capture the mass market. I also thing they need to work harder to elimate the need for constant firmware updates since most people would not know how or what to do and more and likely some won't have an internet connection at home (I know some people who still don't have the internet).

So far almost everyone had recommend a PS3 as the best blu-ray player to get or wait but I am glad now that things are starting to change for the better. As far as I am concerned from my point of view it was needed to force standalone manufuctures to improve there products for the end user to adopt.

At the end of the day the US PS3 users have enjoyed a good PQ from the start and at low price compaired to what was out there. It was expected the PS3 would be beaten in quality and price. Either way the PS3 is still very good so enjoy what you have.
Excellent and truthful post my good friend!

The newer ones are very fast, the LG-BH300 is actually faster than the PS3. I have the BH200 and it loads very fast as well (nothing that I've seen loads as fast as my PC - to include the PS3). The new standalones are great! It's now become a factor of user preference

Well Said! The PS3 is still a phenomenal blu ray player! Still the best on the market in imho. Sony will eventually drop the price of the ps3, they will have to and when that happens the sale of the ps3 player just for the sole use of watching blus will increase significantly again. If it was not for the PS3 the current stand alones would still be crap! all the other manufacturers have been striving to compete with and beat the ps3 from day one

not for nothing...but why do people get so involved when trying to find ways to topple the all mighty PS3? there will always be newer and better...the PS3 has been out for years now...does it really matter anymore?

I heard from other people as well that the PQ was the same with the S350 and ps3. the BD35 as well.

Maby there is a difference but i dont think its that big.

As for everyone trying to topple the ps3......just take it as a complement

i do think now that SA are cheaper it has scaled the ps3 sales back a tiny bit, only because the HT guys/girls that were probly going to buy a ps3 aren't now. but i dont think its something bad, the gamers will balance that out.

I give this thread a 10 prerich
now this is something to talk about.

since standalone's now have firmware updates, it is a lower cost vs ps3

last summer, ps3 was the only player ( under 400 ) that could do this

now 200 buck players can

Also prerich shouldn't you add "are" to the topic title, or a question mark. i mean yea more people are buying SA now, but i dont really think it hurts the ps3 in anyway.

NO PROBLEM

Read under video the PS3 is compaired to the Yamaha BS-S2900 Blu-Ray player

http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/dvd-p...nchmark_4.html

If you read the whole page it also says this player is at par with the Ps3 for loading times

Ok here you go

Load times: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=1384966

Home theater Magazine test for PQ: You need to buy the December issue of HT to see all of this but here's the scores

Sony s350 - 3:2hd/pass 2:2hd/fail 3:2sd/pass 2:2sd/pass MA SD/pass Pixel crop/pass Video Clip/pass Chroma resolution/pass Luma Resolution/pass Scaling/Excellent

Sony PS3 - 3:2hd/NA (doesn't support) 2:2HD/NA (doesn't support) 3:2SD/fail 2:2SD/pass MA SD/pass Pixel crop/pass video clip/pass Chroma Resolution/pass Luma Resolution/pass Scaling/Good

LG-BH200 3:2HD/pass 2:2HD/PASS 3:2sd/pass 2:2sd/pass MA SD/pass Pixel crop/pass video clip/pass Croma Resolution/fail Luma Resolution/pass Scaling/good

Panasonic BD55 and 35 passes all test and has excellent scaling

Pioneer bdp-51fd passes all test except for 2:2hd and has excellent scaling

So the ps3 in quality is being surpassed by standalones not to mention features that are important to HT hobbiest (analog 7.1 outs, balanced outputs ect). Pick up the December issue of HT to see the results. Not to mention that the LG-BH200 is still one of (if not the only) Multi-region player out there.

The deeper point to this thead is this, now that BD has won the format war, and standalones are making great strides - should the PS3 concentrate on the gaming aspect instead of its BD playback abilities. The ps3 got a lot of people into BD, now that the standalones can hold their own, should Sony concentrate on making the PS3 the best gaming experiece period and let the well capable Sony S550 and their other standalones take over the exclusive BD playback duties Ya'll know me - I like to get people to think and see what's the next stage in development. Like Cptngeedle says - it was only a matter a time and its a good thing that this is happening. On one hand you have very inexpensive BD players in the market - on the other hand you have top performers on the high-end side and then you have players like the new OPPO that will just change the HT game all together! This is very exciting to me - not to be a death of the PS3 but a handing over of the BD watch to standalones (you being a former Navy man should know how it feels to hand over the watch ) You can't wait for that relief - and if they give you a good hit (an early relief for those who don't understand watchstander jargon) you are that much happier! The ps3 can now concentrate on gaming, because the watch is falling into well capable hands

Nobody isn't going to prove that until after all the sales have come in for this year and i bet the sales for PS3 have gone down . I know alot of people that have standalone players for Christmas presents.

Is standalone players killing ps3, No not killing ,but they are Hitting them Hard and trust me they feel it Thats for sure

There little To You

I was asked to show proof that some Blu-ray players were better then the Ps3.
That's all i did.
Does this make a difference to you no.But as a consumer it make a difference to me .Bet you bum it does

We are talking Marantz and Pioneer players as well.

Yeah, its going to hurt ps 3 because the sales man can now say these players load as fast or faster then the ps 3 and video is better. :" Iam sold "
