I don't know much about stand alone players as I have the ps3 but if what you're saying is correct then I don't think that would hurt Blu-ray at all. If anything maybe more people that aren't gamers will get the ps3 and then eventually get interested in gaming so maybe it'll help the ps3

Are you trying to be dumb?
If it weren't for the PS3, HD-DVD would have won the format war. |

I get where your going, but I guess is comes down to way you look at it:
Blu Ray is a business, and companies support it to make money, Sony have the PS3 which doing very well, its fast, upgradable etc. They have spent years and muchas $$ making it, and are now cashing in.. Is it hurting Blu Ray, I cant see why that would be, if other companies decide to make standalone players, thats great, but if they arent as able as the PS3 - why should it survive.. Thats just the things work.. Your point is that this might discourage companies from even trying to make standalones, but I think they know theres money to be made and therefore will keep making them. There will always be a market for standalones, as amazing as the PS3 is, it discourages many buyers- because they view it not as a player but a console.. furthermore the blu ray remote - is utterly chaotic when you look at it the first few times.. |

Your question is good if there was any concern about the Blu-ray format being a Sony Playstation Format. There isn't. Remember the PS3 is designed to fight in two markets: Gaming & Home Theatre. It is a fierce machine in both! The picture quality of other BD players is/can be better than the PS3s, but as far as other current features go the PS3 enjoys strengths from its gaming design such as awesome processor power, internet connectivity & large storage capacity. Traditionally on home theatre products the storage capacity is the disc/tape you want to watch, so regular Bd players have to become computers to an extent inorder to offer the same. They will eventually develop more approriate, specific & cheaper hardware for these players, that I'm sure will more than rival the PS3 on the home theatre front. If you will you could look at it like, the ps3 is there to create a market, the other CEs are familiarizing themselves with the hardware needs etc (learning about the tech, experimenting etc) & thanks to the PS3 can steadily bring great players to market without worrying about obsoletion (Is that even a word?) or huge financial loses.
Also, since Bd was rushed to market thanks to a format we don't speak of, the first gen players are lacking certain hardware features that will eventually become commonplace. The PS3 fighting & winning this war for the Format has bought the other CEs time to work on players, improving them with each generation. Anyways, enough from me ![]() |

While the PS3 may have been the cream a year ago, tis not the case now.
I just sold my PS3 for a BD30. BD PQ is better than the PS3 and the BD30 is very fast. Great player. PS3 is a great media center, but I think we are now starting to finally see the standalones surpassing the PS3 in PQ and catching it in speed. |

If we did not have the market penetration the PS3 provided, would Warner have made the right choice? |

This post was about slow and inferior standalones. I think most used to be, but they have finally started catching. The PS3 is a great unit, I just chose to sell it and my A2 for the Panny. Being I did not use many of the ps3 perks, Im glad I did being the BD30 has a sharper image. |

Since the format is not 100% defined I think is too early to spend a lot of money on a standalone player. We are still not sure if Panasonic, Pioneer, Sony, Samsung, Philips will be able to upgrade existing model to profile 2.0 so, and off course is my personal opinion, better to stay with PS3 for 2008, and may decide for good player on 2009.

1.1 is all Ill ever worry about, so I made my jump now for a slightly sharper picture. Keep in mind, Im commenting on 720p via the ps3 vs the bd30. It could be at 1080p these two look identical. I can say that at 720p though, the BD30 is sharper in my setup. |

The other advantage of the PS3 (insofar as blu is concerned) is that Sony puts a lot of money into advertising it, so folks are exposed to BD who might not otherwise be. That can't do anything but help BD.
Personally I wouldn't get a standalone player unless it offered something the PS3 didn't -- multiple discs immediately comes to mind. Someone will make a lot of money offering an affordable multiple disc BD player, I'm sure (and it's likely it will be Sony, since they pretty well own the regular multi-disc DVD player market). (While BD as a rule has an advantage when it comes to being able to get more material on one disc, there's no question the high-end edition of many movie releases will always include at least one more disc and being able to load them both in at the same time is a real plus for many -- not to mention those of us who like to schedule "movie nights" complete with beginning cartoons and double features :>) That's the only deficit I can see with the PS3 for quite some time to come (given its ability to upgrade easily online). |
