That being said.... any gun owner who does leave their guns unsecured so that any child can get a hold of them and accidentally or on purpose kill themselves or someone else... should absolutely be charged with negligent homicide. You hear these stories all the time about how a young kid finds a gun in the closet floor and kills himself or a sibling..... and the parents never get charged for their own stupid neglect. "Oh..... losing their child was punishment enough." Horse crap!

Maybe I'm wrong..... maybe the teen himself was a licensed gun owner.... but if he wasn't.... whomever did own the gun should be charged as well.... if the gun was not properly secured.

You overexaggerate with the statement "You hear these stories all the time...", but I agree that people who do not properly secure their firearms should be prosecuted. I would love to know the true statistic of just how many people were injured/killed because someone got ahold of an unsecured weapon. I would imagine there are not many on annual basis. In this case, the handgun was locked-up, but evidently the kid found the key. You cannot blame the parents for allowing him access to the gun, but you can probably blame them for not seeing (or doing something about) the obvious emotional problems of their son.

I should see when my gun owning license expires.

Oh, it doesn't because it doesn't exist. (The exception being IL and their FOID card, which makes the baby Tom Jefferson cry).

The dad's 9mm was locked in a closet safe and the kid used a key to get it. Had junior taken the car keys and run down his folks I doubt we'd be talking about restricting Chevys from otherwise lawful drivers.

I allways love these blame the video game for violent act scenarieos

Just imagine how many people play these games, Halo3, call of duty, gta

and then look at the ammount of people that are blamed through out the year for doing a killing related to a video game.

its insanley small

So, if the video game was the cause of the problem, then there would be an astronomical high n umber every month of video game related violence

when in reality, its such a small number, it makes it so obvious that the person involved had serious issues, and was poorley raised by there parents

Maybe your experience is different.... but when I was a child... I knew personally two children who died due to unsecured firearms. Here locally, We probably average 2-4 of these episodes every year. The metropolitan area I live in has about 225,000 people. Even if it happens only once... it's such a HUGE tragedy that could be so EASILY avoided. It makes me sick to my stomach when every time you read one of these stories.... you NEVER ONCE hear of the gun owner being charged for leaving a loaded weapon where a child could find it. To me... that is the very definition of criminal neglect, child endangerment and negligient homicide.

I'm glad that wasn't the case with this particular story.

I don't understand how the kid got the gun. Shouldn't it be locked away somewhere out of reach?!?

Ridiculous. All down to parenting, I bet he shouldn't even have been playing Halo, it is an M-Rated game which means it is unsuitable for minors. I never got to play the cool games when I was a kid unless I could sneak over to my uncle's place and he would let me have 5 mins on the latest GTA!

I mean I would let my kid play Halo because I dont think its that bad, but I wouldnt let them play Half Life because that game is actually intense and kinda scary for little kids.

His parents didn't beat him hard enough as a kid. Sorry they had to be hurt/died though.

The story is more complex and interesting, the aliens you fight are more intense, I just find Halo to be terribly corny.

In Latin America and the Caribbean (at least) - its not called child abuse, it's called discipline (to a certain extent, of course). I never once thought of complaining or telling others, since I knew it was my own fault - whether through misbehaving, lying, etc. After I came here from Peru, I could never understand how these kids could yell or talk back to their parents like they did - I was terrified of even doing it. Best believe my kids are being disciplined in the same manner I was.

I was raised by the belt and I turned out fine, I look at my peers whose parents were for a lack of a better world, pussies and let their kids walk all over them. Let my kid(s) curse me in public, you best believe I will bring hell down!

I hear ya. Can't say I've ever "beat" my kids, but they've had their fair share of 'discipline' over the years. Spare the rod, and all of that.

I remember back in high school I was given 3 swats for being a smart-ass to the shop teacher (me? go figure...). The LAST thing I wanted was to tell my parents about it, because I knew I would be in more trouble with them. If that scenerio was repeated today, the kid and his parents would first be on the phone to the school and then at the police station filing assualt and battery charges against the teacher. And we wonder why kids have no respect for anyone these days....
