You all know my attitude on this:

I welcome delays if it means quality assurance and overall better/great product.

Exactly.

LOTR - Shove it if it isn't BD50 with maximum bandwidth possible and lossless audio! Half-ass efforts need not apply.

I call bs on this. Given Paramount's past neutrality I would see them embracing Warner's THD "solution" if anything.

IMO, The idea that they would embrace the small market penetration of HD-DVD over the of mass market penetration of Blu-ray for one of their top releases is insane.

Yep. This is what I read in the insider's thread over on AVS.

wow, just read alot of this transcript. It's like one of those televangeists manipulating the true "believers" only once or twice did someone say, "we were expecting ALOT more titles from Universal!!!!" with the guy saying "relax, I have seen the release slate and you will be happy." and then it's dropped. If I had invested in HDdvd I'd be a HELL of alot more vociferous. The sheep indeed...

Why not release this great release slate?

What is the logic of turning everyone off HD DVD for the lack of release announcements as they Osborne the current players due to the A20, Chinese, and TL51 announcements?

It makes absolutely no sense. They should have hit back with a slate that made US envious, and made people rush to buy the current players.

Really, a big fat F for marketing. Complete disaster even if a great list is coming.

true, I had honestly expected to see ALOT of Universal exclusives that would have made me jealous and I saw, eleven. And out of this eleven, mabe 4 that made me go "ooooooh!" BD announced dozens with MANY making me go "holy hell!"

Pretty soon we'll have the real facts from a more reliable source.

From the digitalbits...

Quote:
"If Kevin is to be believed, Paramount is going to be releasing the Star Trek feature films as HD-DVD exclusives in 2007. That's certainly unexpected, given Paramount's stated support for both Blu-ray and HD-DVD. We've already got a call into Paramount to confirm this one way or the other, so stay tuned."
If Kevin's statement turns out to be untrue or a half-truth, this isn't going to go over well with the HD-DVD fanboys.

Or he may misstatement it as half-truth. I doubt it is exclusive for Star Trek. Because they are plan to release both formats.

HD DVD titles by EOY.
Well if the Star Trek statement is as factual as the 600 titles by EOY statement, I think it's on Penn & Teller territory.

(To get to 600 titles, they need to release an average of 8 titles per week from now on. While for the whole first 3 weeks of 2007 they currently scheduled just nine titles total for the US.
So I think they've started waaay behind schedule if they planned on reaching the mythical 600...)

This statement of "exclusivity" is interesting, coming just before the week where ALL Paramount titles if I'm not mistaken will be available simultaneously in BOTH Blu-ray and in HD DVD for the first time, as January 23 is the date the Blu-ray releases of The Manchurian Candidate and We Were Soldiers will make Paramount have total parity with both formats, making Paramount the first truly format neutral studio.

Oh by the way I actually got Nacho Libre on BD one week earlier than the HD DVD was out, and not online, but from a Suncoast store.

Didn't they qualify it as "a total of 600 titles worldwide": meaning duplicate foreign versions count and past releases (2006).

So I take it to mean by the end of this year the HD DVD *catalog* will be 600 titles worldwide.

I was talking worldwide. Their 3oo titles worldwide in 2006 is a penn and teller, that's why their 600 number based on their 300 number is pure P & T

They exagerated 2006 by 1.4x

Default Paramount is going to be releasing the Star Trek feature films as HD-DVD exclusives

That's from the chat this week at the Home Theatre Forum with Microsoft's Kevin Collins.

Let's hope it's only more of Microsoft's BS and not true.

Edit: Sorry I started a new thread on this. Didn't see this one. Too early in the morning where I am. I should have known the Blu-ray supporters would be on top of what's really happening.

For all these talks about Star Trek exclusives, let's not get too worried about it just yet. In fact, let's not since y'all be busy (and broke) buying Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Spidey, POTC and other BD exclusive box sets this year.

Not to say that BD Trekkers/Trekkies won't get upset, but maybe this is exclusive for this year. In the meanwhile, for the next 355 days enjoy your BD exclusives.

Default Anyone remember?

In reply to why Paramount would make something like Trek exclusive to a dying format, can I direct your memory to a recent format war (well, of sorts)... that between DVD and DIVX (not the codec). Universal (backing another loser) and Dreamworks would release such "big" titles exclusive to the format, like "Liar! Liar!"... and the rumor at the time was "Jurassic Park" would be exclusive.

As history shows, Divx bombed out right, and the JP rumor never came to pass. Of course, it didn't stop the Divx camp from throwing out all sorts of lies as their ship sank into the abyss of obscurity.

All of this seems very similar to the HD-DVD camp's actions. It seems to me at almost every step of the way, the Blu-Ray camp can back up their claims, while the HD-DUD camp can only really spout half truths at best and flaming lies at worst.

A lot of notable websites still seem to have it in for the PS3/Blu-Ray (like IGN for example), despite the facts still being firmly on the side of Blu-Ray. When is a reliable source out there going to take the HD-DUD camp to task for this BS they continue to spread?

I see a lot of lies, rumors, and Microsoft backed hearsay.

I'd wait to see some objective and authoritative sources chime in on this Trek thing before we run to the bank with anything.

I am very confident that the BD format cannot and will not be shunned by Paramount in any way, especially when it comes to an easy cash cow like the Trek franchise.

No worries!

No sooner that I said this, BHunt has new word. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Star Trek: The Original Series will be exclusive as a DVD/HD-DVD combo - at the END OF THE YEAR!

So that means in 2008 BD will get its share. So no biggie. By that time, more BD players will be sold and Paramount may revise their schedule to accomodate BD.

Which means, for a few weeks, until the BDs are released in early-2008.
