I thought the PS3 is being marketed by Sony as an entertainment hub, something that will take over the living room? That is much more apparent now with the 1.8 update. I think that the PS3 is more than just a game console to many members here. Please explore the forums on what the 1.8 update can do before you downplay what many of us hold precious. |

The Sony BDP-S1 and Pioneer Elite BLU-RAY players had a little better picture quality then the PS3 before firmware 1.8. In fact the Pioneer has been a reference machine to compare all other BLU-RAY players in terms of picture quality. We need some magazines like perfect vision and widescreen review to do another professional review of the PS3 after firmware 1.8 update. The PS3 is the only BLU-RAY player currently that does xvYCC. This wider color gamut feature was added with firmware 1.8.
IF one owned a display that handles xvYCC and a special forthcoming BLU-RAY disc with 1.8 times more color gamut then the PS3 would have a better picture quality then the BDP-S1 and Pioneer Elite. Hopefully Sony will start releasing some BLU-RAY titles with the wider color gamut. I am sure in the future some future 2nd or 3rd generation BLU-RAY player will beat the PS3 in picture quality but right now with firmware 1.8 adding 1080P/24 with xvYCC the PS3 is an amazing machine. I am strongly considering buying one or more PS3’s within 2-3 months just for BLU-RAY movies. I do not care about games, but who knows maybe I will get some games one day. So I decided on keeping my PS3 as my main blu-ray player, but in the past week, we have decided to redo the basement. So now I have a new Sony 52" LCD, new table, couch and Focal speaker system all coming in this week. I was wondering if you still think the PS3 is the better player, before it didn't make as big of a difference since I didn't have it connected to a good receiver and speaker system but in regards to audio, do you think the PS3, connected via HDMI to the TV and Digital Optical will sound just as good as the Sony S1 or one of the new Pioneer Elite blu-ray players connected via HDMI to the TV and a Coaxial cable to the receiver.
Also another reason for thinking about getting another blu-ray player is for the lack of IR port on the PS3, I also ordered the Logitech Harmony 1000 and it can't control the PS3.... Any ideas or comments, or is the PS3 still on a league of it own right now. Thanks, Michael Last edited by msm; 06-03-2007 at 11:09 PM. |
