Default Need some help picking a new player.

Right now I have been using my PS3 as my main blu-ray player but I am going to be redoing my basement and I wanted to pick up a stand alone player. I was looking at the new Samsung BD-1200 or the Sony BDP-S1. I like both players but I want to get the most up-to-date one with the best image and quality. I would also like it to last me even with the new updates/standards in the fall for the players. Do you think the Sony is worth the extra $100?

Thanks.

It depends what you're looking for, have you seen the newly-added Blu-ray and DVD features in PS3 firmware 1.8?

Currently the PS3 seems to be the best Java-handling player.

The new Panasonic is the one I'd be going for as a stand-alone.

I was thinking about that but with the rumored 80GB one coming to the US and a price cut. I might wait to see if they update the PS3 line at all and then might pick up another one....is the quality going to be any better on the stand alone player or is the PS3 just as good?

Right now, I am impressed with the PS3 but I have heard the picture on the S1 is amazing...

PS3 is the best thing around right now. Not only do you get all the good BD stuff, but you have wireless/wired internet, muli-media card readers, updateable pretty consistently, streaming media from other computers, DVD upscaling, etc, etc, etc.
For the price, there is no better BD player!!!
For the product, there is no better BD player!!!

I have to agree. I've been waiting for second gen players for a while to replace my Sammy BDP-1000, but looks like I'll pick up PS3 and be done with it for a while. With latest updates it's very hard to beat at this point.

Panasonic is the best standalone player out right now, especially for $600.

Yeah, I agree with most: Get another PS3. Now the PS3, with the 1.8 is coming out to be the best bang for the buck! It has changed so much since Nov 06, when it was viewed as overpriced! I would get another.

I have the BDP-S1 and the picture IS amazing. Throw in the PCM audio track and you've got state of the art without all the audio codec issues (DTS MA and DolbyTHD). My TV is 720p and it looks frikkin good, I'm not sure how much clearer 1080p can get.

Not sure what all the to-do with PS3 is, I thought that was a game system that played movies? When I checked the back at the store, there was no analog output, digital coax, and I think it was missing some other outputs, as well. Also, game drives are known for going out, not AV drives. I think that's how they get away with charging 600, cuz you're gonna need a new one in a few years...

Wait little longer on Standalone players for Blu-ray, and keep PS3 as your primary Blu-ray player for now.

Never, it works perfect now. Maybe upgrade to a 1080p TV when the prices drop, but the BDP-S1 does everything I want. I bought an original first gen Sony DVD player in 1997 for around $900 and it's still working beautifully. Why would I buy a game console for movies? I heard it doesn't even come with a remote.

msm said he was considering getting another PS3 so maybe he doesn't need more than HDMI and TOSLINK for audio.

I bought my PS3 for both the gaming aspect (although it would be nice if some more games got to moving) but just as equally for the Blu-Ray Disc player. I loved that so much that I went out and bought a 65" 1080p tv for my new PS3, and they're so darn happy together! I downloaded the new update for the PS3 yesterday, and it blew me away.

I've thought about buying a new stand-alone this fall, but I'll have to wait and see. Right now I would have to agree with others, get another PS3. Then you can have your Blu-Ray and play all the PS games downstairs too!

Thanks everyone for the comments. I think I am going to wait right now and use my PS3 since it seems it is the best player out right now and maybe this fall when some new players come out, I will take another look then.

Take a look at the Sony BDP-S300 when it comes out in July. Same price as the PS3.

I have the PS3 right now and will eventually buy another BD player for the bedroom to use on my Vizio 32" LCD, but I'm going to wait till there is a player for around $200. Not in a hurry for the bedroom.

The only downside to the PS3 is the fan noise. It's not bad, but it's not great. If you're not itching to get another player immediately, I'd wait and find out how the BD-J situation will pan out. Plus by that time you'll likely get ahold of a good quality player with full features for probably $400.
