I think if you are buying a PS3 then you'll mainly use it because of the awesome PS3 games, blu ray functionality and media server capabilities.

One of the reasons I bought my particular console is because it's BC. And since I've never had a PS2 it still seems like a good idea to me.

I disagree with the idea that if I want to play PS2 games I should just keep my PS2. It's called clutter, and I like things to look nice around my house. 1 Device should do everything including my laundry, and any of you a-holes try to convince me otherwise and there WILL be trouble.

That said, I don't mind they dropped compatibility... If I REALLY get an itch for a PS2 game and my PS3 60gb has crapped out, I WOULD go out and buy a PS2 - they just dropped to $99, which means that I could just as easily get a used one on ebay for 50-60 bucks. Not a big deal considering how desperate I would have to be to play a PS2 game to care.

I feel pretty confident that someone is going to care enough to get the job done with an emulator.

I am glad that the PS3 that I got earlier this year has backwards compatibility, although the seller should have sent the CECHA01 model instead of the CECHE01 MG, like I requested. I should have been more pressing, but I decided to keep this one. Backwards compatibility is important to me, having never owned a Playstation before at all.

I hope that Sony would put back the other 2 USBs, the card reader (which aren't that much to put in), and the EE+GS, plus its RDRAM. I know this is beating a dead horse in some ways, but if Sony was to stick with the 2 model approach, seeming to upgrade the value, have the standard model with the 2 USBs and no PS2 backwards compatibility at the lower price, and have the full PS2 backwards compatibility (plus the card reader and 4 USBs), for $100 more. Depending on the hard drive cost difference, Sony could easily turn a profit with only $30-40 extra hardware in there and adding $100 to the MSRP. That should be the premium model. A free game would have been nice, but that level of hardware for the premium price would be far worth it, especially to those who never had any Playstation entirely, such as myself until two months ago.

I keep wondering, how much does the EE+GS cost now, plus the RDRAM and the memory card board? I read that at launch, it cost $27 for the EE+GS, and $5 for the memory card board, and X-bit implied no more than $5 for the RDRAM.

Add that, (plus SACD support perhaps), with another $100 to the MSRP, and that would be an appropriate premium model. Think of it: the features that we all wanted and loved, combined with the more cooler, modern components and streamlined systems. I'd replace the $499 model with that if I could. Coupled with the 45nm Cell/40nm RSX later on, along with the other improved components, it would be cost-effective, and enable Sony to turn a profit.

i read a few months back from someone in Sony saying that the more this feature is asked for the more likely they aren't going to even consider it(which i'm lead to assume they've left it behind already), because it'll draw attention to the PS2's incredible library and the possible purchase of a PS2 console. now at a fantastic price of $99.

as an owner of a PS2 and BC PS3, i still use them both for PS2 titles, but i do infact prefer the PS3 for playing the PS2 games. also it has an absurd amount of features thare aren't in PS3s anymore. my PS3 kicks your PS3's ass. twice.

:P

You should have read the playstation blog back then, then, uisers were crying that they were paying for the ps2 support and that it should be cut.

There was alot of crying more then there is now..

+ Cost of cooling system to deviate the heat generated by the components with the normal ps3 components + the changes / improvements to the insidie and coolings system improvements.

+ Cost for additional weight.

+ Cost of additional R&D

That what me thinks.
