Ok, so I tried using the monitor only, instead of the TV and the same thing happens. It too is listed as generic PnP monitor. The problem is that I don't think Asus makes stand alone drivers for this (I didn't get a disc with the monitor, and can't find anything online), so I cannot try updating drivers.

Don't suppose Windows has a "Just trust me on this" option?

So i guess I should ask this first. Are you able to see the desktop on your TV? It might be an obvious question, but sometimes simple things are often the most overlooked.

Generic Monitor type is ok in the device manager, but it should show up correctly in the Nvidia control panel.

might have to go through the signal setup on the TV again. Other than that, just keep trying stuff until it works...If not I'd say call in some hired guns.

Everything is fine on the PC. Power DVD simply crashes with the HDCP error when I try to load a bluray movie.

I am currently trying to update to the latest nvidia drivers. The last time I tried I was rewarded with a black screen. But, the version has climbed a few 0.0X, so hopefully they fixed that.

I'll post my results.

Thanks!

Ok, installed new drivers and that got the monitor to work, straight to the TV works, but going through the receiver does not.

I called SONY and his basic message was that since the video card doesn't put out audio, the receiver drops the signal. This goes with what they say in the book (IE DVI->HDMI will have no signal). When I explained that I have video, just no HDCP, he kind of just said "Oh yeah, it drops HDCP then." which sounded more like a guess than a documented fact... heh.

My problem: if the TV works without the receiver in line, then that means the HDCP signal is there, the receiver is just ignoring it. So there are two possibilities:

1) The receiver drops HDCP if there is no audio on the HDMI line. If this was the case, I could just buy a hybrid audio/video card (if they make them) and SLI it with my current card.

2) The receiver's HDCP chip has fried.

The cost of a new card is pretty high, so I hesitate to buy a new card only to find out I have to replace my receiver. And even then, the only reason I could see to make a receiver drop HDCP on video-only signals is to prevent PC users from getting HD content (another rediculous anti-piracy method?)... this leaves me wondering if it would work even if I did get a hybrid card.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

John

run HDMI from PC to TV, and run digital audio from TV to Receiver, or run the video to the TV and digital optical from PC to receiver. Unless you really want the TV speakers to be producing the audio, I see no real reason that you would need HDMI to run to the TV (other than convenience). Use a DVI connection from PC to TV and run audio on a separate line.

I personally run DVI-HDMI connection from HTPC to my TV, and run optical from my 5.1 on-board audio to my receiver.

In short. Let the receiver do what it was meant to do,audio only. Let the TV do what it really should be doing, Video only.

This is going to sound very silly, but... I really, really would like one and only one cable going from the receiver to the TV. To me, the whole point of a receiver is to act like a central switc. So when I want to change between cable, computer, xbox, etc, I only have to adjust one unit.

I know it sounds stupid, but having to change both the TV input and the receiver input every time I change between systems would agrivate me to no end.

I'll have to try a new video card (SPDIF passthrough cards are very common, apparently), or, if all else fails, 'that' program.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

I guess you have to ask yourself. what is worse, pushing a few extra buttons on a remote, or spending hours upon frustrating hours trouble shooting a Home Theater?

I have a bazillion remotes anyways, My receiver for some reason does not want to work with any of the universal remotes. so i have one for the cable/tv, one for the receiver, and one for the HTPC

If i want to switch sound between one of the devices i push the IO select, and then do the same on the TV.

Its a pain and would be nice if things played nice together, but that isnt always possible...good luck
