Not really. Because again, just adjusting for inflation doesn't take into account a variety of factors. One aspect being the fact that now adays there is home video which cuts into potential ticket sales and piracy that effects ticket sales. It's an inaccurate science at best.

Not really, once again.... there's a number of factors at work that arn't taken into account.

No, you can very fairly judge whether A made more money than B.

That 'number of factors' that you're belatedly worrying about now only factor into whether it matters that Star Wars made more money than The Phantom Menace.

They have nothing to do with whether Star Wars made more money than The Phantom Menace.

It just did and that's all there is to it.

It's definitely there, and not hidden away.
Wasn't it under Episode V > Imperial Pursuit?

Things like whether it rained, traffic lights, roadworks, popcorn machine not working....

I wonder which one made more in concessions? I'm sure a few people went to the bathroom during The Phantom Menace and were never seen again.

You're talking about Jake Lloyd, aren't you...

Which can be accused of the same things. And KotCS is another fantastic film.

No. Not because it made more money. Simply due to the fact that it was a better film than Jurassic Park hands down.
My personal issues with the prequels (and I'm sure with others as well) is that they could have been so much better. Was the acting in the OT on a Shakespearian level? of course not. But I think the prequels suffered because the emphasis was so much on the visuals and "can we make this" etc. than on the story itself.

Regarding KOTC I had no problem with the film itself and actually enjoyed it - I got a steelbook DVD at the time - but if you think TPM is a better film than JP...well, we'll just have to agree to disagree

Well I can, that's for sure. First time I won't go see Star Wars in theaters when it's possible to do so. In the end however no big lost for me, I am happy with my Blu-ray set.

That being said, have fun and I hope it's going to be incredible this 3D.

I have to disagree here, of course.

The Prequels have a much better, complex, and multi-layered story than the OT.

I think comparing TPM with JP is just silly, because JP was based on a book, was thought of as a stand alone feature....and TPM was the beginning of the best saga ever put on the screen, a sixth of the whole story,....but it was still miles better in every regard.

As much as I love Star Wars, Jurassic Park reminded everyone about the magic and spectacular of cinema just like the original Star Wars did in 1977. It brought about a new age of fantasy feature films.

I don't think The Phantom Menace achieved that!

It just brought up my lunch....

That's the thing. That's good little to do with the quality of the story, only the effect the special/visual effects had on you.

JP came at the right time, the beginning of CGI. That's why we were so impressionable. Also, in JP we got to see Dinos!!! Every boy's dreams is to see and hear Dinos in action. Come on!

TPM gave us new worlds, new characters, building on an existing universe, having a dark cloud full of impossible expectations to fulfill.
It was doomed before it was even announced.
Many fans destroyed it for themselves. They expected it to be a miracle, unlike any other film ever made.

Well, it actually was that, but lots of fans had grown up, and put the OT on a level it never deserved....it's been discussed to death.

The one blemish against JP is that it gave GL the incentive to move forward with the prequels...

That same kind of argument can be used on Cameron's lastest foray back into Sci-Fi/Action/Adventure also.

Except that Avatar had great visuals and mo cap, but it wasn't special in any other regard. It is likeable and I was impressed the first time around, but I noticed how mundane it was in terms of story and characters the 2nd time around.

Even though TPM is far from perfect, it does have some amazing sequences, more likeable/interesting characters and a more inspired/creative plot.

That is pretty much how I always felt about Avatar. Nice to look at but once you are done looking at it, there is nothing there. For working on it like he did for 12 years, you would think he would have work a bit more on the story. At least The Phantom Menace (yes it's cheesie and silly in some part) you can still watch it cause it as a story and interesting characters. The characters in Avatar are so one dimensonial, even the 3D could not make them stand out

*Glances around* I like Avatar a lot also. Not as much as I did when it first came out, but it's still up there.

Agreed. Avatar is all eye candy. The story is Dances with LeopardTentatcleCreature.

All of the Star Wars movies have cheesey/silly parts. That's part of their charm. BluYoda is right, though, it's the rose colored glasses of nostalgia that masks it for some on the original trilogy.

The Dances With Wolves thing is silly. It's not like that was the first time that type of story was ever told.

You could take any movie and reduce it down to a basic story archetype that's been done numerous times before.

I agree - it's just a basic "fish out of water" story where the main character tries to assimilate.
