It is crazy how much vinyl costs nowadays!

aaaaaand based on what I read in the 4K thread there seems to be more issues with the discs than bluray and dvd. One little scratch and sometimes the disc will freeze.

I have bought some DVDs that did not look great, fingerprints surface marks that played beautifully. Even blurays these days very little issues.

Two discs in Harry Potter box, Heat, American Gangster freezes. And even though I have cheap 4K players the dudes in the 4K thread with high end machines also have complaints.

I rarely see any complaints anymore in the bluray movies threads.

and as I just said DVDs seem to be Rock Solid!
I had a freeze problem on a 4K title the other day and had to go to the Blu in the set in order to watch the rest of the film.

I thought I was the only one with these 4K problems. I didn't know the discs were missing the protective layer. I've had some skip a few times throughout the movie like Heat 4K. Straight out the box I had Batman Returns 4K be unplayable, but I was lucky I double dipped with the steelbook and the 4K disc from the regular edition worked. I upgraded to a think a higher end Samsung 4K player, but still get the occasional freezing. I've been super OCD with discs from a very young age and never really ran into this except with 4K discs and buying used Xbox 360 and Wii discs from Gamestop back in the day.

I inherited a nice vinyl collection and recently bought a new vinyl player to play them. I think about 60% of the records I've been playing don't work because they are warped and wavy. I tried the trick putting quarters on the arm, but I haven't had much success either. The collection includes just about every great classic rock album. I'm realizing the majority of them are probably ruined except for the artwork on the packaging.

When I search I can't find any info saying that 4K discs are missing the anti-scratch protective coating that BDs have. AFAIK they use the same manufacturing process as BD discs except their data layers are denser and can be triple layered. Here is an old discussion thread about this:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=326270 See post #7 in particular

If anyone can find any articles saying a 4K disc is less durable, please post a link. Until then I continue to believe it's the denser data that makes a scratch more significant on a 4K than BD.

For movies I don't own, I try to buy the 4K+BD pack on sale if possible. With Paramount releasing 4K only sets, I'm leaning towards buying the BDs only because BDs are good enough and players are cheap and plentiful, especially at Goodwill if you need one. For movies I already own the BD, I rarely upgrade to 4K unless it's a favorite movie or the price is so cheap I can't resist.

I do see some evidence that 4Ks have the same coating layer. If that is true, then it is weaker/less effective than on a BD. Again, since 4K has 2x the data on the same size disk, imho, they needed a STRONGER protective layer than a BD. if they are using the same protective formula, then logic would say that it is less effective.

Net: This issue still concerns me and makes me hesitant to heavily invest in this format.

This technical stuff doesn't really matter to me, I just read about a lot of complaints in the 4K movie thread about certain discs and I've also had issues but on cheaper players.

For $10 4K/Bluray/Digital package on BF, or Prime Days I'll double dip or buy that six months old "New" Release. The Bluray and digital safeguards me against any 4K issues.

I don't get upset if I can't see the film in glorious 4K from the disc since the digital usually redeems in 4K. I guess I'll just compromise on some 4K discs if there is an issue with it.

If there is a disc replacement mentioned in the 4K thread then I'll participate if all it takes is an email and a photo of the reciept.

totally agree. If I can get a 4k/BD combo for $10 on BF, to me that is the best scenario.

Again, I think the discs and the layer/coating are the same on 4Ks and BDs. The only difference is the data layers sandwiched inside. I'm sure a better scratch coating should've been devised for 4K, but I also understand they wanted to use existing BD manufacturing equipment to make 4Ks.

Earlier I mentioned Paramount dropping BDs out of their 4K combo packs. I bought 2 of those 4K only packs before I realized Paramount was doing this. Going forward I will buy the Paramount BD over the 4K due to the BD likely lasting longer and BD players are more available.

I would hope Paramount's 4K only sales drop off a cliff and the BDs do better, but I have no confidence Paramount would read that as a reason to start doing 4K+BD combo packs again. Instead Paramount would probably read it as nobody wants physical 4Ks any more so they would stop releasing them. If other studios follow Paramount's bad example, then they may prematurely kill the 4K format. If we think 4K discs are susceptible, wait until 8K discs come out.

Exactly. A 4K+BD of a movie I like and don't own for $10 or less is my price point. Sadly that eliminates virtually everything the boutique labels make but at least I can buy a couple dozen 4K+BDs around $10 each holiday season.

I've never had a playback issue on a 4K disc that wasn't fixed by wiping off fingerprints. I think the scratched discs issue is overblown but I understand feeling differently if you've had a bunch of playback issues.

When a finger print will stop your disk working you think a scratch wont be an issue? Its probably under blown since people on here worry about it but generally don't check all their discs before the return window for the most part.

Now we just wait to see if that's all movies or just the ones in the ad like the last time. I'm guessing it'll just be the second.

I’ve only ever had it happen if I miss the email they send asking you to approve a delay. Those usually occur when street dates move but not always. I’ve already received two emails like that for one item from the last sale.

It looks like Target will be keeping movies for now at least. One close to me just finished remodeling. I’m talking a total gut job that took almost a year. The movies still lasted. Three sides of this shelf have movies; the front, back, and right side. The fourth has books.

Yeah. Both “growing pains” and “the originals” jumped like $30/40 in a week!
