The German one is hands down garbage. But I simply just can't make up my mind if I like the French, or the U.S. better. The French disc has a better encode and looks like a newer scan of the same source. But it's brighter and doesn't have more detail. This is tough. Anyone else want to chime in?

Look at the caps, while I think either is basically good (but personally think the FR looks burnt out, see no evidence of it being cleaner) I can't help seeing that telltale noise/lack of detail characteristic of a dated transfer. I hope there will eventually be a new transfer that brings out more detail with less noise. I wish the same for Streets of Fire.

Sometimes a brighter picture doesn't necessarily mean a "cleaner" transfer. I've never seen the film theatrically, but I don't necessarily think that Lynch intended the film to look like the French version, which is noticeably brighter. A lot of Lynch's work is filmed on the darkish side, which is clearly artistic intent. The film looks richer on the darker side, plus it makes some of the cheesiness of the sets less obvious .

The FR disc is far too bright. Areas that should be shadowed are now illuminated and it just doesn't look natural at all. Compression is also slightly better on the U.S. disc.

I meant cleaner as is not as much print damage as the US version.

I think some of the sets still look fantastic, especially the Throne room. Chronicles of Riddick certainly borrowed from Dune

Some of the scenes in this film have yet to be bettered - not the film I hasten to add, but some scenes are just incredible. When the Emperor meets the Time Worm and Baron Harkonnens base are just fantastic!

I agree they are. Time Worm lol. 3rd Stage Guild Navigator just sounds too confusing doesn't it?

Ill be honest - I couldnt be bothered to check when I wrote that. Bet youre shocked by that right?

But really - that scene - I mean if you like dark sci-fi that scene has got it all and Ive never seen anything like it. If anyone was planning a Warhammer 40K film they need to take a good look at that scene and copy the hell out of it!

The German version was released about a year ago, but so far no one has reviewed it, or really commented on the PQ of the disc.

I will gladly import both if the transfers are decent, the chances of this getting a US release are slim to none at this point. Now watch after posting this it gets announced 6-9 months from now and I wind up sucking on my size 13 shoes, LOL.
What are you looking for?

Just imported the U.S. BD myself personally.

I nearly bought the U.K. BD before releasing that it's the horrible German transfer.

I think that the French BD looks too bright and pumped up, the contrast and colour saturation have definitely been boosted on that disc.

The U.S. BD looks the best out of the bunch imo.

The U.S. BD is the best for PQ and AQ. Crank up Toto in lossless and it's pure bliss.

Yup. Better still, find a UK slipcover and put that round the US case!

Wouldn't the slip be too large for the case?

No! I bought the UK Dune and the US Dune at the same time to compare them a while back. I returned the UK Dune (5 minutes comparing the two was easily enough to convince me!) and must have forgotten to include the slipcover...
