Blu-ray Sales, April 26-May 2: Avatar Stays on Top
Posted May 6, 2010 04:05 AM by Juan Calonge

In its second week, Avatar was once again the clear Blu-ray top-seller during the week ended May 2, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Fox's blockbuster outsold the number-two title, Universal's new release It's Complicated, by 16 to one, and moved nearly three times as many units as the rest of the top 20 put together.

Top ten
(1) Avatar
• It's Complicated
• The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
(3) Sherlock Holmes
• Tombstone
• Armageddon
(15) Iron Man
(5) Toy Story
(6) The Blind Side
(12) The Dark Knight
The Blu-ray percentages and sales figures will be added later.

Very well put. I couldn't agree with you more.

If you haven't bought it or watched it at home, rent it and wait for the special features for a purchase.

I just watched the DVD version of the movie. Help me understand something. Is the DVD quality really really really crappy or was the blu-ray just perfect?

I swear I couldn't watch more than 1 minute of the DVD. It looked like it was a bootlegged copy.

I honestly don't see why people still didn't make the switch. This movie should do it for them.

It's a mix that the blu ray was just so good, and the dvd with such a long run time and so much in focus for most of the film that it just couldn't keep up and whilst it is more or less as good as a dvd can look for this film it still looks bad.

I'm about to watch this BR for the second time now. Every time I insert it into my Panasonic DMP-BD60, the screen goes black for about two full minutes before displaying any indication that it's trying to load the disc. All in all, I'd estimate that the loading time between when I insert the disc into the player and when the movie menu appears is about four minutes... No firmware updates available for my player, anybody else experiencing extremely long loading times?

did you check this http://panasonic.jp/support/global/c...index2_na.html

mine did this but it is not taking 4 minutes @ least 1 minute and 10 seconds

you have a new firmware update dated as 2010/4/5 (Firmware update via network : 2010/4/5)

Yeah, like I said I have the most up-to-date firmware and I still experience severe loading times with this title.

I experience fairly heavy loading times with most titles with my Panasonic player (kinda unhappy with it...it's stupidly slow when it comes to the pop-out tray for the disc as well), but this one was so insane the first time I thought that something was wrong with my TV or player, especially since it was just a black screen with no loading icon as usual.

To me it is not primarily an action film, and the action sequences are not the most compelling in the film, even in the theater, in 3D, with a large screen, sitting fairly close, and with good, dynamic sound.

If I was forced to squeeze Avatar into a genre, I guess it is closest to being a fantasy film, BUT it is the ability of the film to stir compassion, empathy, and spiritual & numinous feelings that make it so good, IMO. It does so while telling an age-old, archetypal, universal story of the struggle of the indigenous to survive in their paradise-like natural world, against misunderstanding and assault by outsiders, who, as usual, have a lethal tendency to engage in psychological projection.

Some of the movies of the past that have had the best action sequences have not been reducible to the category of "Action Films," IMO. For instance, when the filmmakers waited in the lobby for reactions to a sneak preview of Ben-Hur (1959), one of them (I think it was Wyler) said, "If they come out raving about the chariot race, we'll know we've failed." I agree. BH was a spiritual, political, familial film that addressed several universal issues, including the power of the state v.s. rights of the individual, vengeance v.s. forgiveness, etc., more than it was an "action film."

My favourite scenes aren't action scenes either (when Jake takes flight for the first time and when he and Neytiri shortly afterwards are biefly seen talking about the experience, Neytiri: "I turn like this, I feel the wind", Jake: "Yeah I banked so hard", and the scene where Jake is revived by Neytiri and his human form meets her for the first time. None the less the action scenes where important as part of what keeps the film moving is the knowledge that the dozzers would arrive in three months and then the rda would take action.

I have an almost identical player and it takes around 1 minute 10 seconds also.

wilky61, you might want to check your player to make sure that the latest firmware actually updated into your system.

However if this happens to MOST of your BDs, you might want to contact Panasonic and see if they have any solutions for you.

.

I don't consider it a straight up action film, but if you were to goto a video rental store, that is where it would be. I enjoy all the parts of the movie, action and non-action scenes. I just find it crazy that some people can't watch the movie once it gets to the action scenes. People like what they like, but it is still odd. Oh well.

I agree with your assessment but I still see the action as superlatively superior to most other films.

Beautifully steady, no shaky cam garbage, many wonderful wide shots allowing us to see the true scale of the battle, exciting, and really gets the heart racing, especially towards the end.

Even the Thanator chase. Compare it to, for example, the Alien chase in Star Trek from last summer. Damn. Every movement and attack by the Thanator has tremendous weight, and the action is absolutely ferocious in a way that Star Trek totally failed to do with its alien chase scene, imo.

James Cameron is the king of Sci-Fi action and Avatar does nothing but reinforce that notion, imo.

Ok again try to check you have the latest firmware update 2.3 by pressing setup display then status .2.3 should pop up.Have you installed an SD card in your player? if not try to install one and if your player is connected to internet prohibited and try it again and see if speeds increased. If not all of this helped you contact Panasonic Support.

My favorite scene now is when Neytiri draws back on her bow and then that jellyfish thing sets upon the arrowhead causing her to reconsider her current actions.

Beautifly shot!
