About re-release and additional footage:

Quote:
CS: It's been four months, but the movie's still playing well in theaters and is still in the Top 12.
Landau: Yeah, but there's such a demand worldwide for people who want to return to Pandora that we felt that to do it. With the added content that we want to do in today's day and age... You have to create original content to support the added value material. So we needed the time in order to create the appropriate added value content including scenes that weren't in the movie that Weta Digital is now taking four to five months to finish scenes to be in the movie.

Yes, about six minutes of new finished scenes and 20 minutes of unfinished scenes (if I remember correctly).

And that was from an article in April so 2-3 months have gone by since the interview.

So who knows why he cut it, must have been his test-audience reaction, but it sounds like he is set on putting it back in regardless of the prior reason.

Yeah, it sounds like it was for a mix of reasons, quite frankly I think we saw all that was neaded.

I don't know if this has been brought up I found something interesting. It has Avatar as #14 with adjusted ticket prices.

It shouldnt go by money made or gross at all. It should go by the number of tickets sold. In other words, "How many seats were filled in every movies' theatrical run"

That makes matters very complicated though and money is money (and inflation is much easier). I find it interesting how much some films make but find it silly to compare in detail.

I don't see what would be so hard about going by the number of tickets sold for this or any movie, providing there is a will to collect the data. For instance, in the '50s, someone (can't cite source right now) looked at number of tickets sold of films of the past and got very different nominees for the "most popular movie of all time." At that time, Gone with the Wind was the top grosser, and probably the top inflation adjusted grosser, but Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was more popular i.e., sold more tickets, but the tickets were cheaper on the average, and the kid's tickets (a big chunk) were much cheaper. As time went by, whatever was the most recent super-blockbuster (e.g., Ben-Hur, Star Wars) tended to have the "largest gross" sooner or later, and probably the largest adjusted gross (although GWTW was hard to beat) but was not necessarily the most popular, popularity being best gauged by number of tickets sold.

An example of the difference in adult ticket prices during the same 5 year period in the San Francisco Bay Area: Around the World in 80 Days in 70 mm (1956 & '57) $2.20 day or evening; Sleeping Beauty in 70 mm (1959) $1.49 day or evening, most first run 35 mm movies ~ $1 to 1.25 evening. Neighborhood theaters about $1, Wednesday afternoons during the summer (a mix of new films at the end of their runs, and revivals), 9 cents! In this example, adjusting for inflation alone won't fix much in trying to measure popularity.

So the extended cut on the Blu-Ray special editon should be 8+ minutes longer, not 6, going by the Theatrical re-release. With a final running time between 170-171 minutes, depending on how they round out the number.

So unless they plan to add even more to the Blu-Ray cut (since the movie cant be more than 170 minutes in theaters due to IMAX), this will be the cut that in included on the SE.

Yea, so unless its changed recently, there will end up being...

- The first theatrical release from April

Then in the November 'Special Ed' you will get...

- The 8 min or so re-release and...

- The the Extra Exteneded Edition which will throw in about 30 min of unfinshed CGI scenes, plus the finished 8 min from the re-release.

And then somtime next year there will be...

- The 3D Blu-ray release.

So at the end of next year, there will end up being FOUR DIFFERENT Blu-ray versions of the movie, if I am not mistaken.

Hope this helps.

.

Extended Avatar Gets Theatrical Release
Posted July 8, 2010 06:27 AM by Juan Calonge

20th Century FoxTwentieth Century Fox and James Cameron officially announced that Avatar: Special Edition will be released in theaters August 27, in a limited engagement and exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D. This version of Cameron's epic Avatar will include more than eight minutes of new footage. No comment was made on an eventual Special Edition Blu-ray release, let alone if it would include a 3D version.

The studio claims that since last December, the number of available digital 3D screens has exploded, and moviegoers who missed experiencing the film in 3D will now have that opportunity.

James Cameron also commented: "Audiences repeatedly told me they wanted more of Pandora, and wished they could have stayed there longer. So we're making that possible. Avatar: Special Edition: will be exclusively in 3D, and will have eight minutes of never before seen footage, including new creatures and action scenes. Whether you already love the movie, or you've never seen it, with this Special Edition, you'll be seeing it like never before."

Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

Thatīs great news. 8 min is better than 6 i guess I will see it again in the theater for sure. I just hope cameron/fox puts up the money and lets weta finish the other 30min for the longer cut heading for blu-ray. It must be sought after and they know they will get their money back so why release it with unfinished cg i wonder.

I'm in heaven for the re release. Will be going to the theater multiple times for this. Hasn't been a real good movie since Avatar left the theater. Hope Inception can change that.

I'll pass on going to see it in the theater again, but that's good for people who want to go again. I'll wait for the Ultimate Edition in November.
