Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is up to 74% now with 14 fresh and 5 rotten.

Well i absolutely love John Carter and definitely have time for Jupiter Ascending so this is encouraging. Although to be fair I was always going to love Valerian.

I'm thinking I will go see Atomic Blonde on the 19th and just buy tickets to Valerian on the 20th. When I see Valerian for the first time I want it to be on the best screen and I want the best reserved seats. I have no idea how they will be showing this screening (3D? IMAX? RealD? Dolby? tiny 2d screen with us crammed in the corner?).

Usually you need to show up at least 1 hour early to be able to get in. If you want good seats then arrive even earlier.

Always assume 2D unless otherwise stated.

This is one of those few rare films that I'm gonna watch and not give a damn about the negativity from the critics. It's a Luc Besson project for crying out loud.......I know what I am getting myself into.

But the reviews aren't even remotely bad.

This should be a step up to Lucy though.

It's at 75% now but I expect that to drop as more reviews come in. The initial numbers are usually higher than the final. I think it would need to stay at 75% to be certified fresh.

These reviews won't affect my enjoyment at all. I am pretty sure I will love it. I compare it to following a sports team. You want to see them do well in all aspects and be recognized. I just want it to succeed for Luc and possibly get a sequel. I will enjoy it either way.

I'm not really anticipating this movie very much, but this is Besson + sci-fi. It'd be easier to believe in some hyperbole about it being the best movie of the year than about it being the worst.

I'm not going to let the critics dissuade me from seeing this. Especially considering the fairly lengthy list of movies I've seen lately garnering 80-90% on RT that have been underwhelming in most cases and terrible in others.

VALERIAN is an extraordinary cinematic experience if you are willing to take the trip. If you are a fan of Besson’s THE FIFTH ELEMENT, you aren’t going to want to miss this. The world building is exceptional and he found a delightfully quirky pair of actors to lead us through it. In fact, I felt this experience was slightly reminiscent of STAR WARS: EPISODE IV - A NEW HOPE in many ways - while it is unlikely to find that kind of impossible success. The impressive visuals and the rich and imaginative alien life forms all feel like we are seeing something truly spectacular. Perhaps the story won’t necessarily connect to all audiences, yet it is something worth experiencing on the big screen - on the biggest screen possible - with a pair of 3D glasses to take it all in. Valerian is weird, wild and kind of wonderful.

That, more or less, is what it feels like to watch Luc Besson’s delirious “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” an independently financed $200 million intergalactic adventure so high on its own supply that it makes makes “Guardians of the Galaxy” look like an Ozu film (and not even one of those later Ozu films that he jazzed up with color). This is a movie with the density of a dying star, a movie that offers more things to see in every frame than you can find in some entire franchises.
