Video quality issues with Onkyo receivers:
http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...?tag=pdtl-list "The bad: Downconverts 1080i component video signals to 720p when outputting over HDMI; HDMI video quality converted from analog sources may not satisfy videophiles" http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-6466_7-...?tag=ont.ha.av "its less-than-ideal video performance may give HDTV aficionados a reason to hold out for higher-end alternatives." What I dont get is, if your using the HDMI for both video and audio it will donconvert the picture? Or if your using the hdmi for video and using a optical cable for sound, will you then receiver it in 1080i. Is that how it works? Also guys for the likes of me I still cannot get the display to show that its locked in on TureHD and yes I've switched over my sound and video to both the hdmi cable. I made the switch at the receiver and the PS3 and I'm still not getting it for some reason. Can someone here please point me in the right direction in resolving this problem, it's about to drive me nuts! All it displays it as is "THX Cinema" and I when switch though the different modes True HD never comes up. |

Can you please "upconvert" this paragraph I ripped from the above article... ![]() Like on the TX-SR605, there are a couple quirks regarding the analog-to-digital video conversion on the TX-SR805. For example, those planning to use the TX-SR805 with 1080i signals via a component-video input will be disappointed to find out that all 1080i signals via component are downconverted to 720p when output via the HDMI output. Furthermore, 1080p signals via the component-video input cannot be output via the HDMI output at all. There are certainly workarounds for these issues-- Notice were it says using COMPONENT |

I have one that has got me stumped: Regardless of what soundtrack I play on any disk (Dolby TrueHD, etc.), the receiver (805) only shows "HDMI Through" and the only speakers that light up are FL and FR, even though all the speakers have sound coming out of them (rear and sub).
Any ideas? I'm sure it's something simple...I'm just agitated and can't for the life of me figure out what the problem is. |

Thanks, HAMP, you just saved me from going prematurely bald LOL. I knew that it had to be something simple, but couldn't figure out which setting it was exactly.
I still have the other problem though, I am using 'Conan the Barbarian' remake as my test disk, which has a DTS-HD Master soundtrack on it, but I can't get my receiver to show that is is playing that soundtrack (it's the only one on the disk by the way). I am using a PS3 (slim), set PCM output...and I am using an HDMI cable. I went into the receiver settings and told it to play all the soundtracks the way that they should be played (Listening Mode Preset, I have 'Dolby TrueHD' set to 'Dolby TrueHD' and 'DTS-HD Master Audio' set to "DTS-HD Master Audio". I had a Sony BDP-S590 installed, but switched it out with the PS3 in hopes of that solving my "problems" but it didn't LOL... I'm really only concerned because the receiver used to show all of the speakers light up (FL, FR, SR, SL, Center, Sub) but the only ones I see now are only FL and FR, even though sound comes out of all the other ones. There was a time when all was well and I can't figure out what I did to change all of this ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Setting the PS3 to PCM means it is doing the decoding of the dts-MA track, turning it back into PCM. The player sends PCM to the receiver, which is why you don't see Master Audio displayed on your AVR. That doesn't matter because you get the same quality audio either way. Movies are mastered as PCM, get compressed using codecs such as dts-MA to save space, and must be decompressed back into PCM. The decoding can happen in either the player or the receiver. You get the same PCM either way. If you want to see Master Audio displayed on your receiver, change the PS3 output to bitstream.

That warning is about Secondary Audio (menu clicks and audio for PIP commentaries). There's nothing missing from the movie soundtrack either way. You need to use the PCM setting to get Secondary Audio since it is not part of the soundtrack bitstream.
