Berg will produce and will develop to direct "Hercules: The Thracian Wars," a co-production of Spyglass Entertainment, Berg’s Film 44 and Radical Pictures. Spyglass and Universal will co-finance the film.

"What resonated for them was that this was character driven, about a character who’s more man than god, with conflicts and redemption," Levine said.

Radical’s the most recent company making an aggressive push for its comicbook properties in motion pictures. Radical Pictures is also teamed to produce "Caliber" with Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and John Woo’s Lion Rock, with Woo attached to direct. The publishing company recently closed a funding deal through a privately held company called Lacho Calad, with coin coming from Singapore. The money includes a discretionary fund for script development of Radical comicbook properties.

Berg is also set to direct and produce a new version of the Frank Herbert sci-fi novel "Dune" for Paramount Pictures.
Peter Berg Talks about possible Dune Remake:

Quote:
Last year it was announced that Peter Berg would be directing a new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s massive and influential novel Dune. We haven’t yet heard much about what Berg plans to do with his version, which will be the third filmed take on the story. SciFiWire caught up with Berg, who reveals that there is not yet a script, but says “there’s a more dynamic film to be made” from the novel.

[The book] was much more muscular and adventurous, more violent and possibly even a little bit more fun. I think those are all elements of my experience of the book that can be brought in without offending the die-hard fans of the Bene Gesserit and Kwisatz Haderach. There’s a more dynamic film to be made.

‘Dynamic’ I can see. David Lynch’s 1984 version was ponderous (though it has moments of exaltation and amazing sets) while the 2000 Sci Fi Channel mini-series was overly pagebound. It kept a lot of the details Lynch had to cut, and left out most of the art. Yet scripting a dynamic film that properly deals with two warring political houses who are scrabbling over the planet Arakkis and the valuable spice it exclusively produces has proven to be a difficult task, if those previous efforts are any example. There’s a lot of politics to cover, a great deal of mystical mumbo jumbo and no small amount of pure science fiction.
Enjoy.

I loved the first one. However, I would welcome a remake. If done right, it could be epic.

No need for a remake, the mini-series was beyond epic and more than good enough. Guess I'll wait and see if this is cast well.

Hmm... another one? Loved the original, but never checked out the miniseries version. I could see them making bad casting choices on this depending on whether they are trying for a younger teen audience. Also, could be horrible if they try to only make it an action oriented scifi movie.

Nothing beats Sting.

"I WILL KILL HIM!"

Although I liked the miniseries and it was more faithful the sheer scope and epic qualities of the movie make it great.

I have Dune on HD-DVD... horrible movie. The remake would have to be completely different in order for me to even consider watching it, at which point there would be little point in still having the Dune title... so yeah, do not want.

'Dune' remake back on track with director Pierre Morel

Paramount has found a new director for its remake of the sci-fi classic Dune, after Peter Berg dropped off the project in October. The studio has hired Taken helmer Pierre Morel to oversee the movie. Paramount is currently looking for a new writer to incorporate Morel’s vision of the project into the original draft by Quantum of Solace scribe Josh Zetumer. Morel plans to make a very faithful adaptation of the 1965 book by Frank Herbert. The movie is a high priority for Paramount’s production chief Adam Goodman. Kevin Misher and Richard Rubinstein are producing.

3D please.

The Dune: Part Two thread didn't show up in my search. Someone graciously quoted my post there later.

I’m actually glad it’s this thread that got bumped as a reminder of what could have been.

Paramount optioned the rights in late 2007 and Peter Berg started developing it soon after. Charlize Theron and Robert Pattinson were in talks to play Jessica and Paul, with Joshua Zetumer writing the script and Berg planning to shoot the movie in Israel. After he passed on it, Pierre Morel became attached. One or two pieces of concept art from his time on the project actually made it online within the last year or so.

Ultimately it would’ve been terrible timing with Avatar coming out and becoming the biggest movie ever. It would’ve been like Lynch’s film coming out in the wake of the original Star Wars trilogy all over again. I’m guessing that’s why Paramount let their option expire in 2011. They already had Trek, M:I and Transformers anyway.

Herbert’s estate was smart with how they handled things after. Frank’s grandson Byron Merritt mentioned in 2013 or so that a “major production company” he couldn’t say the name of wanted to make the first three books into a film trilogy. I’m guessing maybe that was Legendary and the deal simply didn’t close until late 2016, just after Denis happened to mention Dune as his dream project in that Arrival interview and how he “probably wouldn’t be able to get the rights.” Life is funny.
