Heads up !!!

'The Man Who Fell to Earth' will be shown on the ENCORE TV channel this Sat. 1/16 @ 9PM EST.

Some fun trivia about TMWFTE ... the initial considerations for the part of Thomas Jerome Newton were author Michael Crichton (due to his 6'9" height) and Peter O'Toole !

That's going to be fantastic to see on the big screen. Too Bad Lionsgate will probably never release this film regardless... RIP Criterion Bluray.

Default Re-Release of The Man Who Fell to Earth?

I just caught this news before I buckled in for a $250 Blu-ray Criterion copy, if this is true, as it is a UK release, will I be able to purchase it and will my Blu-ray player be able to support the region?
http://www.indiewire.com/2016/07/dav...ry-1201703446/
Very excited if this is true...

This is exactly what I was going to post. That is a purchase that will have increased value too because you will then be open to cinema from everywhere in the world.

Or you could buy the Japanese StudioCanal release which is Region A and sells for about $13 ...

I second the region-free player idea

It'll save you money in the long run.

Not to bring up politics on purpose, but ever since the Brexit thing made the pound drop in value vs the US dollar, importing UK blu-rays from Zavvi and Amazon.co.uk has often been cheaper than buying the US blu-rays from American websites for me.

I tried to watch this once on TCM and just couldn't keep watching after the first 20-30 minutes or so.

Just thought it was boring.

...what am I missing?

It's a weird one. Some good creative ideas, and the cinematography is interesting. Parts near the end can be pretty head scratching and it probably drags on too long. I wouldn't blame anyone for getting bored some of Nicolas Roeg's work does the same to me. Bowie is pretty great in it.

It's one of those '70s auteur arty SF films from a time, before Star Wars, when everyone was doing it (John Boorman, Robert Altman, etc.).

I lived in a one-theater town and missed this and a lot of others (this one hurt especially, because I was a big Bowie fan), but I bought the books when the films came out.

Because I'd read the novel long before I finally saw the film, I already knew what was happening. I don't know what it would be like to see it cold.

Roeg is a well-respected director of the time. I'll find out how I react to a film with an unfamiliar story when I finally get around to watching Walkabout.

"Full details of the DVD/BD release, including a special Collector’s Edition, will follow shortly.
The film will also be released in the US and Germany, stay tuned for more information."

EDIT: i guess that could just be referring to the theatrical run?

from StudioCanal:

Hi Christopher,

There will be a release of the US version of The Man Who Fell to Earth.
I’m afraid we’re just handing the European release so I can’t give you an exact date etc.

Best,
Eileen

It would probably come from Lionsgate if it were to come at all.

Does Criterion ever reissue titles? I want to see this in HD, but I'm not spending $150 on something I've never seen and Amazon rental is only SD.

They don't have the rights to it. There is a release coming out in Canada with the new remastee, that's going to be your best bet.

It's $25 USD shipped, comes with the CD soundtrack and other stuff in specialty packaging

Well that about solves it for me. Just get the Canadian disc, which will be Region A by default.

Let's hope they don't botch things up though.
