It's just something to do for fun.
You get no "credit" but it helps a big university process lots of data to "fold" protein simulations. I am sure someone on here will explain more, if not I think there is a sticky/thread. Speaking of which, i finally got on the list! CptGreedle is there now! Oh, and my PS3 makes no noise at all, well hardly any. In fact my DVR cable box makes more noise. |

from what i understand, the 80GB PS3 uses a 65nm processor, which is supposedly smaller than the first generation units. the newer smaller processor runs cooler so shud be less stressful thereby reducing the fan noise. the 65nm processor was out since March or May so some later 60GB units might have them too, but not certain of it.

Does everyone with a "loud" fan have sucky-ass speakers that they can hear the fan over their speakers? Come on people if you can hear the PS3's fan over your speakers, I think its time to upgrade your 10w spearkers. Are these 3" paper made spearkers? Whats next? My PS3 gets hotter than my freezer?

Wah, my fan is loud. Are you seating 2 inches away from your PS3 that you can actually hear it over "quiet scenes". I agree with you you guys that it has gotten a bit more "unsilent" with the recent update, but come on. Throw a pillow over your PS3 and it will be quiet.

I watched the guys you tube vids that had a loud fan. That noise was abnormal and Id almost say they have faulty fans.

I modded my ps3 by attaching a Ford F-350 radiator and fan to it. It doesn't get hot at all now... amazingly
I should remember to replace the water with anti-freeze for the winter though ![]() |

You can tell from the model number at the back of your PS3 unit.
The guys though from Beyond3D have said that models manufactured starting May 2007 already have a 65nm version of those parts and these were first seen in the 80 GB PS3 units sold in Korea. The smaller die-shrink does make the difference ![]() |

First post....I'm hoping this forum can be of some assistance to me on this hot (yet, pun intended) topic.
I just picked up a 60GB PS3 last Sunday from Target (So Cal, USA). The system updated itself upon first use with the recently released 1.90 fw. My PS3 fan noise is very annoying (obnoxious is the term my wife used) only after being on for less than 10-15 minutes. Also, I have a very capable high value 5.1 HT system that I don't always want/need to use, so please save the childish responses headed in that direction. In short, do you suggest I take it back to try another unit or is the loud fan noise an issue of the firmware updates making it work harder? Either way, the fan noise is unacceptable. Please advise with your understanding of this recent debate as I intend to resolve this issue in short order by returning this unit for another one. I will return the replacement for a full refund if it has the same problem. There is no need in my entertainment system for a unit that degrades the movie and gaming experience. Settling is not an option. Last edited by mgonzo2u; 07-27-2007 at 06:04 PM. Reason: Additional details added |

So I can't really understand what the problem is I guess. But I can suggest the following troubleshooting moves.
1) move the PS3 away from the other electronics that you have. I purchased a vertical base for mine so I can sit it on my carpeted floor off to the side of my entertainment system. This allows it to "breathe" easier. 2) be sure that you aren't blocking some of the cooling ports with objects/furniture/other components. 3) lower the room temperature (I know this is a bit unrealistic for some). If you can stand to lower your a/c by a degree or two that may make a huge difference. These tv's and recievers and everything else make a lot of heat and this has to be blown around to cool off the PS3. If the air is cooler the fans don't have to blow as much. If this doesn't work or you've already done it then I guess you are hosed on this one. Sorry to say it. I am really glad I don't have this problem. mine was also one of the first versions of the system and I'm not sure if they have changed the fans in there since, maybe they are cutting costs? Good luck. ![]() |

Thank you for your feedback.
Unfortunately none of your suggestions are relevant in my situation. The PS3 sits flat on a glass bottom, open air Sony entertainment center/TV stand (made for my Sony KDF-55XS955 HDTV) without any other electronics to the left of it and a center speaker about 6-8" on the right side of it. A big sliding glass door that is about 2.5 ft from the back of the PS3 has been open every time this PS3 has been used. Thus, there is plenty of air flow which even with the glass door closed, there is plenty of room for air circulation near this unit. The PS3 couldn't be better placed by a design team. As for being hosed, not necessarily. Its only been in my hands for 5 days and I have a receipt for return purposes. Inconvenienced yes, hosed no. Thanks again. |
