For those interested, it premieres on MGM HD in the UK tonight, (7th Jan 9PM)

I own the Blu but unfortunately I've not been able to view it yet as I don't have a Multi Blu Player.....yet.

It's not been released in the UK, and it's not likely to be any time soon, so this is welcome news

Well it's fortunate news for those who have channels like MGM HD, but sadly many don't, like me.

I just finished watching Roger Corman's Piranha on this Shout Factory Blu-ray, and I'm glad that one of my favorite movies from childhood is now even better. It's not a flawless high definition transfer, but it's pretty impressive for the source material. I've said this before when discussing other such genre movies, but I'm just glad that somebody cared enough about this one to give it a decent Blu-ray release.

I love how the presence of Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Barbara Steele (The Pit and the Pendulum, Black Sunday) lends an old-school horror credibility to Piranha. The special effects, as crude as they were, proved to be successful in selling the concept. The sound effects come out on top, though, and I'll never forget how the sound of the feeding fish gave me nightmares when I was a kid.

Tonight's viewing was a fun trip down memory lane, and I'll be revisiting this Blu-ray a lot in the future.

So what's the best release? I hear there's a french blu out on a BD50 with a bitrate of 33357 kbps.

I'm happy with my Shout Factory edition, I got it at Comic Con and was lucky enough to have it signed by Joe Dante and Roger Corman and they were awesome, super nice guys.

Watched this tonight for the first time since vague VHS memories. Mainly bought it because I live 70's/80's genre stuff and also Joe Dante's later work. Didn't really think it held up though... some nice moments and makeup work, and that shot of the woman being dragged under was excellent, but overall it took itself way more seriously than I remembered and lacked a lot of memorable atmosphere.

Might have just not been in the mood, admittedly.

There's also a new German release with avg bitrate of 34.9 mbps. Per the caps-a-holic it appears to be a wash between it and the French, with just a slight brightness/gamma disparity, but the German has the advantage of English subs and the commentary found on the Shout release. All three BDs appear to come from the same master and an educated guess can be made Shout's probably sports the worst encoding.

I have one of the Piranha movies, but My cover differs from the ones listed in the drop down on the top of the page.

Blonde girl lying on a red inflatable, wearing sunglasses and a silver or gold bikini.
just under the water level are 10 piranhas and the main one is chewing on the word piranha, which is squirting/exploding out blood.

Nevermind, seems I have an import...

That one has a great gatefold slipcover that opens up to show Ving fighting off a horde of fish with an outboard motor. It says "chew on this" and has an eyeball, bikini top and some severed arms and fingers floating. It is also embossed on the front. A store here in MI got a copy in and I had to buy it despite having the US disc already cuz it was too cool not to have, but started me down the dark road of caring and collecting slips.

Even better, they just released part 2. Finally in widescreen (first time in the US except for maybe laserdisc, heard different stories about that and never seen it myself) and with a few extras and a new scan. Now it can finally be seen, not just the edges which have chopped off my whole life, but what is going on in the darker scenes that were always too hard to see on previous VHS and dvds!

A note on Piranhathon: August 3rd marked the 40th anniversary of Piranha!

Think about that: 40 years and still being celebrated! That's an amazing run! Paul Grogan couldn't even hold his breath for that long!

The Canadian disc is the same as the US disc, it’s not inferior.
