Ghosts and Goblins is pretty insane.

Ninja Gaiden on the NES gets pretty ridiculous later on. TMNT on the NES (not the arcade clone, just the NES game.. is it even possible to complete??)

I suck at a lot of shooter games now (Ikaruga.. hate that game)

I couldn't beat that game to save my life when I was younger...

I made it all the way to the 15th level after many tries...then died and had to start all over.

Edit: The RC level

Try playing Half Life without using quicksave, if you screw up you may have to go back maybe an hour or two worth of game play (sometimes as far as the beggining of the chapter), it doesn't have a consistent checkpoint feature, unlike most shooters that instantly save each time you progress. Also ammunition is never replenished so if you run out of ammo, you are screwed. I wouldn't imagine finishing Half Life without using quicksave though. Plus there was no instant health regeneration. I do find it odd that the shooter generation adopted health regeneration from Halo, health regeneration was a narrative device to point out how effective a super soldier can be in combat, but now it's being used in every shooter, I think valve's shooters are the only modern shooters that don't adopt the health regeneration technique. Resistance wasn't that difficult of a shooter, it's more difficult if you don't keep your finger on the trigger.

Im on a level on GTA San Andreas where I have to fly a plane towards another plane, then turn it around and try and fly inside a halo. Its so frustrating, by the time I turn the plane around, the other one is so far ahead it gets to the city just before I manage to reach it.

It caused me to go on an 8-year gaming hiatus.

But I can't forget about World at War on Veteran. I was actually on my way to beating it and spent about 3 hours on 3 checkpoints, called it quits and saved game for later. Came back...everything was gone. I couldn't take it anymore and sold that junk. So what's yours?
I believe probably Kid Icarus on the NES due to the amount of TIME i spent playing it. It was a slow moving game & I always had to upgrade my weapons. Also Castlevania on NES as well...I was younger then, so it was HARDER then. A statement you'll be using as time goes on!
