i leave it on pcm all the time for everything. this way i dont have to change anything except when i want to bypass the reciever and just play with the tv. for this i alsu use the multi a/v connection with components. so when i want to switch i can go into ps3 setting and pick what i want to use. i have enough inputs for me to do this.

some people do claim to hear difference between internal decoding PCM vs bitstream receiver decoding.. I for one did not hear ANY difference..

When I was researching this matter, I consulted with a sound engineer who works at an acoustic lab and whose Ph. D paper was literally on the mutimedia codecs. His answer was simple. Human psychology. He added that statistical analysis that he ran thru multiple double blind tests in controlled environment revealed nothing in favor of either method of decoding the sound format.
But the most important thing was that when I gathered needed equipments and ran blind test on myself, I could not tell any difference.. That's what matters for me. That stopped me from spending nearly 3000 on new receiver and bitstream player... PS3 better get DTSHDMA decoding soon.. otherwise I'll still have spend that money!! There are some benefits to having the PS3/Player do the decoding that may or may not matter to you...
Something to do with the interactive audio stuff - language selection(?) and/or pip and it's secondary audio I think..hopefully someone else can chime in with the specific/correct bits. I forget the *exact* details but you lose some capabilities if the receiver is doing the decoding. |

But I would prefer if I could select an option that only when I play TrueHD tracks the PS3 will use Linear PCM as output. Otherwise it should stay on bitstream without changing back again manually... |

I have a Panasonic Blu-Ray player and I have a Yamaha receiver that does not have HDMI.So I been using the 5.1 Annalog with PCM,Dolby True HD,and DTS-HD and think the sound is amzing. For plan old Dolby Digital and DTS I use The optical cable. Yeah at some point I have to get a new reciever.Would love to buy a receiver that can do true DTS-HD but there like $700 and up I dont have the cash for that right now.
I have my Panasonic and PS3 hooked to the same TV and go back and fourth between the too.One day I use the Panasonic and the next I'll use The PS3.There both awsome machines. |

That looks promicing I just wish they would not say DTS HD. Since what is really important is what the two letters after it are being either HR or MA. But the fact they say the DTS HD is indistinguishable it should be MA. But some clarafication would be nice. |

So... If I understand well...
PS3 cannot bitstream DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD ? It can only do it internaly and then send it by Linear PCM (what "PCM" stand for exactly ?) to the decoder ? So what is the use of the Bitstream option in the PS3 if it can't bitstream things ? Only for basic DD5.1 and DTS ? And why the PS3 can't bitstream higher codec ? And can the difference between bitstream or PCM sound of the same codec be as psychological as the difference between VC-1 and AVC ? Some people think one is better than the other because of some ideas, but in fact, it's the same thing and the difference is only psychological ? And sound like PCM, DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD can only be sent by HDMI, no matter if the sound is decoded by the PS3 or the decoder ? No optical option possible ? And finaly... What is the difference between PCM sound, DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD on a blu-ray disc ? Wich one is better ? I always tought that PCM at 16 or 24bits was the best sound... is it ? |

And yes, the differences can be psycological, but there is a catch. Dolby TrueHD applies dialog normalization to the tracks, which most people do not like. I think it muddies the sound up a bit, far more evident if you have expensive gear. And DTS-MA has a higher max bitrate than Dolby TrueHD so it could in theory sound better. The format is still pretty new so all this is kinda up in the air. I have pretty good ears and I know that they tell me PCM is the best. DTS-MA is a very close second, but so far I have not heard a Dolby TrueHD track that was as good as the other two. It is still far better than regular Dolby Digital.
