Though, what the op is saying is that us poor souls without HDMI can't listen to the Cantonese track, since we're connected through optical. That kinda sucks. Unless of course, the PS3 would decode it into some kind of lossy 5.1 for us.

ur receiver will at least accept a pcm 2.1 signal. using sound processing, it can be manipulated to a 5.1 if so desired. in honesty, it doesn't sound half bad on my receiver.

How do you "manipulate it to a 5.1"? You can't. At best, you will get 2.1, and a weird mix too.

I don't know why they didn't put a Cantonese DD5.1 track on there? Not like there's not enough room for it.

as i said, sound processing on ur receiver. i have played the pcm track over optical on some discs and turned on an effect processor that does this. i don't know ur receiver so can't tell you anything.

is this the best option? no! but it at least lets you simulate 5.1

Allow me to introduce you to the concept of Dolby Pro Logic Surround II and DTS Neo6 (or whatever all the variations are called :-P)

Lucas has a 4 track STAR WARS master, Lucas sends that to the 6 channels of the magnetic tracks of a 70mm print. Lucas happy. (the bass is sent to two of the tracks to make the Star Destroyer have more ooommph. Wow we got a 4.1 mix!)

Lucas wants 35mm prints too. 35mm prints Mono. George unhappy. Dolby says hi George! We got Dolby surround Matrix to promote! Wanna play? George happy. How does it work? We send the Front channel to both left and right optical split track. We send Left channel to left and we send Right channel to right. We send Surround channel to both left and right optical track but one of them signals we send upside down! We call that a 4 to 2 matrix! That's neat-o, but how do I get the 4 tracks back? Well that's the matrix magic: we have four little fairies inside a metal box manning volume controls with a complex mathematical cheat sheet and they send the signals from the two channels to the 4 different speakers in real time changing the volume for each! That's even more neat-o, I'm playing! George happy, George makes millions. Dolby too.

You can do the same thing from any 2 channel source if your receiver has one of them fairies. The fairies have trained more and are now very athletic so they're faster and play with the volume knobs quicker and harder, and they are more fairies inside now too.

Of course they are not perfect so they aren;t as good as if the tracks didn't have to be mashed into two, but hey in the Matrix sometimes you can't tell what's real and what's fake. Unless you take the Blu pill

I know all about the sound processing on receivers. It's just that, I'd much rather have a true Dolby Digital 5.1 track over Dolby Prologic II.

I guess it is time you upgrade to a HDMI receiver then.

I know about ProLogic II and all the other variants, but I thought they were obvious. What other choices are there?

I think many of us are holding out for HDMI 1.3 equipped receivers. Yes, we know the arguments for HDMI 1.1+, the players decode most of the formats already, etc, etc, but I'd rather just wait it out than have to upgrade one more time another year from now.

I have a PS3, and I'm waiting for the HDMI 1.3 receivers. So I guess I have to listen to the crappy english dub for 5.1 DD. Did we REALLY need French DD 5.1? Those snooty French would almost unanimously watch the Cantonese track with subtitles.

Hmmm. Wonder how it would sound like in French? Do they play it straight or ham it up? Is there an English dubbed version?

Did anybody see Kung Pow? Now that is funny!

Well this version (Kung Fu Sion) has a Chinese track in DD 5.1 and English subtitles. So it may be what you need. Questions are, will that play on your PS3? And will it be the uncut cut?

And what are the audio specs of the other versions?

There's at least 5 BD versions of this movie

That's too expensive for me right now. It just seems silly that you wouldn't be able to watch the show in it's original language at true 5.1 without the latest setup. How many average consumers actually have HDMI receivers? Probably not very much. The French DD5.1 track was totally expendable, IMO. So now here's another question I have. Would the lossy core of a DTSHD-MA track be able to be passed through optical? I'd be happy if that's possible.

Whew, that's great news. Once receivers that decode DTSHD-MA becomes readily available, I hope they start using that more often over uncompressed pcm.

I played it last night with the Cantonese soundtrack thru the Panny analog outs and it sounded fantastic. And it looked very good. One of my favorite movies.

As I said before, there really was no reason they couldn't have put a 5.1DD track on there. Plenty of room. Isn't that what BD is for?

I have a PS3, so decoding DTS-HD isn't much of a concern if I purchase HDMI1.1+ receiver now, but the ones that exist are pretty "bare bones" especially in the sound processing dept of the HDMI sound signal.

I don't need much in my 3rd floor condo, I can't have a sub (would drive my downstairs neigbor nuts) so all I need is a low-mid range receiver like the Onkyo TX-SR604, so me paying >$400 for a receiver is crazy.

So at this point I might as well wait for the next generation of low-mid range HDMI 1.3 receivers that offer more processing over HDMI.

Yup. The Kung Fu Sion edition has: "5.1 Chinese LPCM, Chinese, English, Italian, and Spanish DD 5.1", "Chinese, English, Italian, and Spanish subtitles", plus all the features too. No way to know if it's the uncut version tho, as both cuts are 99 minutes long when rounded, but since it's not a US release but European, one would think it might be the uncut version...
