My question to all you Blu-ray supporters is, now that Blu-ray has won the format war, do you think that prices will be affected that there is no Hi-Def compitition.

Some friends of mine and I were discussing whether HD DVD's would go up in price for the high demand in a failing format, or dwindle because the format will become and has become obsolite. We came to the conclusion that HD DVD's that were popular, example Transformers, would go up in price, while unpopular HD DVD's would sell for cheap.

This lead us to our next question, will the price of Blu-ray movies and/or players be affected by the conclusion of this format war.

Your thoughts?

Sony 7.1 HDMI STR-DG900 Receiver

Overtime the prices will come down. short term there might be some upward pressure due to increase demand now if fence sitters and former HD-dvd players are starting to buy BD playerls. But this should help future prices come down when economy of scale.

Another issue is the falling dollar which makes it more expensive to import goods. If a lot of parts or players are manufactured in Japan then there is going to be some pressure to increase prices to maintain profit and margins

The Prices are already going down. A year ago the only Retail Places you could find a lot of Blu-Rays were at BB, CC, Borders & Fry's. The Average price was around $30. Now I can find them at Wal-Mart & Target and the prices are around $25. It's only going to continue to go down as more people start buying HDTV's and Blu-Ray players.

I'm talking about Retail Prices, not on-line like Amazon. Believe it or not most consumers do not get their Movies online.

Default Amazon bogo history

Does anyone know the specific dates of the previous Amazon Bogos? Thought it would be interesting to see for stats and patterns to their sale.

I'm not sure that would really help. I remember some BOGOs being offered for only 24 hours. Many of them were purely designed to combat HD DVD. As the Paramount and Universal titles begin to surface on Blu-ray, the increased software offerings may have studios competing for your Blu-ray dollars. I am being patient and primarily buying titles offered as deals on Amazon or used titles available at local resellers. There are a few Fox titles I want to add to my collection but I refuse to pay their ridiculously inflated prices for catalog titles—even with the extra 10% discount I get from Amazon. You can probably bet that some decent discounts will be offered as the 2008 holiday season approaches.

There is no real pattern to it

It was simply to combat big HD DVD releases for the most part

There will be BOGOs from time to time, but no more every other week like with HD DVD. It was unreasonable to expect it to continue after the war ended

I think as longs as sales continue to climb week after week, these BOGO sales are going to be far and few between

We now have access to EVERY movie from all studios (well eventually)... A bit of a short sighted comment. I get that blu's are "more expensive" now without BOGO's, but I think having access to all movies is FAR more important that seeing the same movies over and over on a BOGO..

I think some more Bogo's will occur, but I think things like the jr.com weekend sales will be the big buying splurges going forward. When so many movies show up around $10-15, it's essentially the same thing...

No, it was a great thing for Blu buyers. You have to look long term. Studios will no longer hold back titles, retailers have already exponentially increased exposure and shelf space

yep, after the CC 50% blowout, My CC has eliminated all but about 20 hddvd titles and there is a full row of blu

On another note, I notice WM just got a shipment of HDDVDs in, low and behold they have Best Buy price tags on them with the BB sharpie'd out

I agree ... despite what others claim.

And I am not convinced that Universal especially will offer a lot of the deeper catalog titles on BR. And I am not convinced that the entire catalog of films will be offered on Blu.

I still think the death of HD dvd was not good for blu buyers, because I have never bought a blu ray off a shelf, so shelf space does not matter to me, plus I have never paid over 15 for a blu ray because of the sales before the death of hd dvd when they were trying keep up competitive prices.

But you may be right, in the long run we will see new titles that will drive down the prices of older titles similar to dvds price structure. At least dvds keep blu ray prices on its toes....

Sure we have access now but at what price?

I agree the same old bogo's sucked but I would rather wait for Bogo's then pay the high cost of BR's even tho we have access to every movie now.

I don't agree at all. We now have access to all studios/all movies, expanded selections at some B&M stores (with others soon to follow), more prominent displays/placement as retail and studios focus more and more on blu-ray, and a much better chance of blu-ray actually surviving. IMO, if HD DVD had continued as long as most had expected, they both would have ended up fizzling out and dying. Blu-ray winning out, imo, was a major step forward for everyone.

Well, that's you but I buy almost all of mine from Best Buy or Circuit City and from what we've seen from reports, tracking the numbers, etc. the majority of sales are at B&M stores, not online. Unless things have changed recently, Best Buy is at the top of the list. Tracking the online sales at Amazon during the format-war, showed their impact on the overall numbers was minimal. So, while it doesn't matter to you, if you look at the big picture, IMO, retail does matter.
