Default Will Blu-ray pricing increase or decrease

This is my first post to Blu-ray.com, however I've been a fan of the site for quite sometime.

My question to all you Blu-ray supporters is, now that Blu-ray has won the format war, do you think that prices will be affected that there is no Hi-Def compitition.

Some friends of mine and I were discussing whether HD DVD's would go up in price for the high demand in a failing format, or dwindle because the format will become and has become obsolite. We came to the conclusion that HD DVD's that were popular, example Transformers, would go up in price, while unpopular HD DVD's would sell for cheap.

This lead us to our next question, will the price of Blu-ray movies and/or players be affected by the conclusion of this format war.

Your thoughts?

Personally all the HD DVD crap will drop in price, perhaps retailers wont even try to clearance it out and stuff. Looking back to when DVD took over and VHS died, the DVDs were almost always cheaper than the VHS tapes when they came out. So it is a mixed bag really...I personally dont care what happens I wont be buying any of it. Hoping Blu Ray prices will go down a tad on the movies for new release, most older titles are cheap enough where some match the DVD price so thats not too bad.

hd-dvd vs blu-ray was a bad thing. it prevented the mainstream from adopting hdm and therefore led to a slow decline in prices. now that blu-ray will be the mainstream, prices will drop drastically. also, dont forget, blu-ray still has competition in dvd. expect $150 blu-ray players by christmas.

If you factor in inflation, the sad state of the economy, hi-def media is not a necessity and the need to get more average consumers to adopt into this media, then it can only go down.

I dont see why either one of them would go up in price. I cant remember things going up in price when previous liitle battles were ended. Now over history, everything has eventually dropped in price over time. Now as to say if there will be as many sales in the near future, I dont have a clue.

Well, its hard to imagine prices going up. However, as much as HD-DVD and Blu-ray offer great picture, many believe it's most noticeable on sets over 37 inches. Many people will use smaller TV's and be happy with DVD. Many people don't even have HDTV's let alone 1080p sets. Of course time will change that, but we're talking years here. There are a lot of messages going out to the public, ("the great and unobservant public" to coin a Sherlock Holmes phrase) about the DTV 2009 transistion. This will without question have millions of people go out an get an HDTV (even if they don't know whether they really NEED one!!). I see TV sales being the main focus this year for the general public. That is where the big money is going. They've been buying DVD's for 10 years now and they love them, thank you. The combined HD-DVD/Blu-ray player market in the public's hands is a "drop in the bucket" after a couple years. Look for Blu-ray to "catch" on in about 3 more years, especially when new computers come with them as STANDARD drives. So, after that reasoning, I'm guessing the prices will stay level for another year or so and then start to drop. Now that HD-DVD has resigned, is there much reason to immediately lower prices? But in the long term, when "no frills" players become widely available, then yes Blu-ray will gain real traction and replace DVD.

I don't think prices will change at all. I doubt prices go down because the companies want to start getting their outlay of money back into their pockets. I am sure they won't go up as we are starting the fight for mass adoption.

Default Blu-ray pricing/lack of sales complaints: POST HERE ONLY

The FYE near where i work have some crazy high price for BD. $34.95 - $39.95.

some are 29.95 but still, these prices are crazy.

Best Buy cutting their prices down to 20 buck soon so i hope the trend will follow.

I believe what this poster meant to say was... "Yes, those prices are a bit high for my taste. Where I live, they are high but not full MSRP, of course I still don't buy my BD there."

in all seriousness, FYE was good when the studios were split as FYE always had the hard to find titles... Now, they have been relegated to being lonely and empty, like before the format war... hard to believe they are still around and I haven't seen a Sam Goody in YEARS...

I just went to my local Suncoast store, and the new releases were between $39.99 and $42.99 - I saw used copies for $29.99! How they stay in business, I have no idea. They did have Hollow Man for $19.99 but it rang up $29.99 and the clerk was going to fight me on the price even though it had a sale sticker on it for $19.99. I won.

Every single B&M where I live is usually overpriced. But I buy from BB when their high prices become decent with sales. Most of my purchases are online.

Well the worst prices I have seen over here are in some small stores. Add to that a small choice of titles which makes me totally avoid those.

I mean we already have a small choice of titles in big stores compared to what you guys have in north america (though I think this year we should maybe catch up a little)
