Ok, the Mrs recommends...Ghostbusters, the original Time Machine, the original King Kong, any Godzilla...even 2000, but not the Broderick one, Lost Boys, or War of the Worlds new or old. She thinks the original WoW is classic scary. Also, Alfred Hitchcock movies.

Edit...more from the wife...Swamp Thing, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Arachnophobia, Gremlins, The Black Hole, The Twilight Zone, and finally Tales from the Crypt.

What seems to be getting overlooked here, is The Changeling from 1980. It's rated PG and it's a classic. I liked The Messengers too. Another way that's way creepy, but Rated R is Exorcist 3.

One of my guilty Halloween favorites is Halloween 3. Not a great movie for sure, but I watch it every year.

Whoever mentioned "The Gate", got +100 cool points from me.

My suggestion would be "Silver Bullet". I'm supprised nobody mentioned that one. I loved that as a kid!

I would go with Hocus Pocus. I still usually watch it once a year. Ernest Scared Stupid might be good to watch also, although I haven't seen it in a few years.

I think ABC Family does 13 Nights of Halloween leading up to Halloween, where they show movies each night Hocus Pocus is always one of them.

Depending on the age. There's always those goosebumps movies. I LOVED those as a kid. If they're a little older THE MONSTER SQUAD FTW!

The Mad Monster Party is cool. Older, stop animation film. Has the likes and voices of Boris Karloff and Phillis Diller.

Something Wicked This Way Comes was technically made to be a "kid-friendly" October-leaves 80's Disney horror movie to follow up on "Watcher", but...may be too stylistically creepy for most adults. If they want "scary", don't hold back.

(Young Frankenstein is also a good way of getting them onto real 30's Universal, even if they, ahem, don't get all the jokes the first time...)

Agreed. One of the most underrated horror movies ever!.
The first R horror movie that I saw as a kid was Psycho. That movie scared the crap out of me. I was afraid to go to go in our basement forever. There is very little blood. Just the imagery is still frightening to this day!

I do have that on DVD and i don't think they have ever watched it.

Can anyone think of any other animated stuff?

I like Blood the Last Vampire (anime), which is okay, it is a little bloody, but that is about all. I also have The Halloween Tree (on VHS only and hasn't had a DVD release )

Animated: I would go with It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. I would also go with the animated series Ghostbusters (not related to the movies) and The Real Ghostbusters (based on the movies). Both are classic. I think that the complete Real Ghostbusters series comes out in November, while some episodes are available now. An of course, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I still watch it every Halloween!

Fright Night for sure.

House on Haunted Hill

And for a lighter mood, since it falls on two holidays range, the new Blu Ray of Nightmare before Christmas.

Oh yes, The Great Pumpkin is a must watch and of course the Disney Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I also like the Donald Duck cartoon Trick or Treat.

I also have The Groovie Ghoulies series too.
