Well, since I just ordered my 58" Samsung plasma from Amazon, I voted plasma.

I'll post pics after I get it calibrated.

plasmas just scare me.... i think they'll die with DLP's soon.

LCD's tend to show more reliability

There is no question that LCD technology has improved vastly in the last few years, and if I had to choose today between it or Plasma, it would be a tougher choice. But I think I would still choose Plasma and for these reasons:

1. No Motion blur.
2. Colors are more natural.
3. No decrease in PQ at any viewing angle.

These are things most important to me and the Plasma fanboys will undoubtedly say better black levels as well, but I think that is slowly becoming a non-issue. Just like the LCD fanboys say that their sets are better for gaming. Again, I think that is also becoming a non-issue.

I would never steer anyone away from either technology as our eyes are all different. And what affects one person (motion blur for me) doesn't affect another. So whatever technology you've purchased I hope that you can say it was the right choice for you.

Default hogwash!

Im voting LCD....I have never owned a plasma....this is my 1st HDTV. I have a Sony Bravia kdl40v3000. yes i had motion blur....BEFORE I calibrated it myself! Sports games dont look good on LCDS??? Thats news to me...I'm a sports junkie and all the sports that I watch (basketball, football and the Red Sox, lol) look fantastic in HD...no motion blur! The blacks are sexy and so are the colors! Oh Yeah...the viewing angles are fine as well! Especially for me cause I have the best seat in the house! lol

I'm not pissin on anyones leg and callin it rain...I'm just callin it how I see it, and LCD's are my choice.

and which lcd tvs has anyone seen that has a terrible viewing angle? my Samsung (see sig.) has no distortion of color and only a distortion of picture due to physics . But I literally have a 180 degree view of the same quality picture until I'm looking straight at the side of the TV. So is my year old samsung a ballin-a$$ series or are these all LIES AND BLASPHEMY ABOUT LCD?!

confucious say, "bad luck"

I've had my sammy for 15-ish months now and it's ALWAYS on and I havent had one problem yet. I'm sort of hoping it does so I can use my dang 2 year service plan through Circuit city before it runs out

Why do you think computers don't use plasma screens? Because with common activity, the screens wouldn't last as long.

If somebody can debate this and can prove the reliability of a plasma without buttering up the facts AND say the picture is worth it, I will be happy to purchase a plasma as my next TV. I'm just not convinced otherwise.
Please stop spreading misinformation. Plasmas and LCDs have similar repair rates. See the article below that summarizes Consumer Reports surveys of over 93K sets. In summary, both technologies averaged ~3% failure rate with Pasasonic leading the pack (both LCD and plasma) at 2%.

Is that proof enough?

I suggest you educate yourself on the difference between the meaningless dynamic contrast ratio numbers being thrown around by LCD manufacturers and ANSI (true) contrast ratio. Your 1,000,000:1 means nothing.

Here is why I won't get PLASMA.

1. Plasma can tends to be much noisier than LCD because some panels have a fan to expel the extra heat it produces.

2. Lightning conditions is limited to low light or better yet complete darkness to watch tv using plasma than LCD.

3. Heat generated from Plasmas tends to be quite hot than LCD.

4. Screen size is smallr on Plasmas than LCD such as 40inch = Plasma while 42inch is LCD or 50 inch compare to 52inch LCD>

5. Plasma, you should "burn-in" at least 200 hours. Note: newer models have rotationg pixels or some sort which as you guess do not need to. But to be safe do the burn-in for 200 hours anyways. If you fail to do proper burn-in procedures then you will suffer IMAGE RENTENTION for the life of your TV!!!

6. Plasma are cheaper because of screen size.

7. Don't play video games on it because I had HUD burned in for life of the tv.

My opinion only, don't respond Rischoe.

i have to agree of course. There is nothing wrong with LCD don't get me wrong guys, i owned LCD sets for a while and was happy before they both blew panels 2 times each. After the last one blew i opted for plasma

i was apprehensive at first because of all of the mis-information that was flying around about burn in, but i took the plunge and I am so happy with my plasma, i could never go back to LCD.

LCD has improved dramatically and blacks are good, but the LCD color pallet is far, far from natural, and plasma blacks are black, not nearly black like LCD, but black!

It is all subjective of course but IMHO Plasma is the way to go if you want the most true representation of how film is supposed to look!

Not unless you're watching a completely black screen they certainly don't.

That's dynamic contrast ratio which is about the most meaningless stat there is where HDTV's are concerned.

Measuring actual contrast ratio with white text on a screen and the blacks beside it gives you true contrast ratio and the Pioneer Elite KURO measures a little over 40,000:1 - no other TV on the market comes within 20,000:1 of this, not the Panasonic Viera, not the Sony XBR8, not the Samsung 950; nothing.

Umm, because most people's HDTV viewing area doesn't have hundreds of thousands of watts of floodlighting overhead? That much is painfully obvious.

and didn't Sony have something to do with bluray discs? lol

Also on the cnet review, When comparing black levels with the xbr8 and the kuro, xbr8 produced darker blacks

Although kuro still slightly won, it's not because of black levels.
Yeah, Sony also got out of the SXRD business, yet they've still not produced an LCD set that bests their SXRD sets. Thanks for illustrating the point that Sony is only concerned with profit, not with quality. Their XBR8 sets did NOT produce deeper blacks than the Kuro plasma's when any source material was on the screen, only when the screen was completely black and only by .001 lambert - if you don't actually watch anything on your TV, I guess you've got a point.

I guess I'd agree with you, if the numbers weren't growing every year and beating the previous year's numbers on a quarter to quarter basis.

As long as people want the best picture quality available...and as long as professional audio/video installers exist, so too will plasma.

LCD will be replaced by OLED where large panels are concerned before plasma is replaced by anything.
