and people need to remember that only a few years ago dvd's were the same price as blu rays are now, so i dont really see the point in complaining.

Yeah. Only place worse that i've seen is Barnes and Noble. Holy cow are those overpriced.

Though I did see Faces of Death on the shelf there yesterday while trying to unload a giftcard.

Faces of Death. On Blu-ray. holy cow. had no idea.

Well I'm using Monster HDMI cables. As for calibrating my TV, I have no idea how to do that lol. I have everything set up to play, but I don't have thing to say it is "calibrated". I can see some quality level better on blu ray, but nothing mind blowing. I want to know why it looks so much better at the store. I know why music and movie demo sound better at the store, but i didn't think you can cheat on a TV display.

Strike one AND two.

You don't need the Monster Cables unless you're in the 1% of users who experience problems with cheaper cables.

As for calibration, try to use a DVD or Blu-Ray calibration disc to get your colors and picture to optimal settins. You can also look around these forums for your TV model or on TVtweak.com or the AVS forums for settings that should help for your environment. If your TV is using the original settings, it may be way too bright, blurry, or ugly right now.

okay folks, we all agree that best buy is too high of a price when a new blu-ray title is scheduled for release, and nobody in their right mind is going to pay $25 - $39 for a one. (but we do have some first timers!!!)

All i can say is, first do your homework, bargain shop around whether it be at your local walmart or target or online shopping where companies have site to store for local pickup. Look for those weekend and holiday sales, which is going make it easy on your wallet. And don't forget about Ebay, where I've bought most of my blu-ray disc for $10 -$15, brand new factory sealed, that including shipping.

Too put things in perspecive nemo74, many stores will have a high quality blu-ray player as demo to show that quality picture. Next those HDTV's are daisy chained thru a component video (Y, PB, PR) adaptor and cables, which does have some high definition bandwith, but not as much as HDMI cables.

That why you see some HDTV's display better than others off that one feed!!!

.
good luck

sounds like the issue you have isnt with the format but with prices. if you look around (internet is a must) you can get them pretty cheap. also patience is key. prices do come down. some are worth the 30 price tag imo, like transformers. i had to have it. i remember when i was paying 15 for sd-dvd new releases. 2x more was worth it.

I can't sympathize with the mentality of the OP. I hear this complaint about the high cost of Blu-Ray discs constantly -- usually as an excuse not to upgrade ("I'm not going to pay $30 a movie for what amounts to a nominal improvement in picture quality"). Blu-Ray offers HD video as well as uncompressed audio (unless you have a crush on Warner Brothers). This argument is tired. Blu-Ray users are subscribing to a niche technology. It is state-of-the-art, to use a cliche. They should expect to pay more until the technology is mainstream.

People may as well complain that Maseratis are not $15,000 cars. After all, they only offer a nominal improvement in quality, performance and comfort over a Geo Metro, right?

Your right. I have no problem with the format. I was a late adopter to DVD though, so I didn't know about the $30 price tag on those. I used VHS up until 2002.

Best Buy here has less than a full aisle, and prices are similar to what the OP said. I only buy new releases there when I know it's something I want on release day.

I'm afraid if you want fairly priced blu-ray discs you'll have to order them online as was said here. If you're like me and would rather walk in to a brick and mortar store you're going to be disappointed and broke.

think about when you posted this- dec 27- there SHOULD be nothing on the store shelves. may people go and scavenge even after holiday sales (like me) for whats left... go back mid january when FULL STOCK is out.... they have almost 2 full aisles of blu's at best buy near me.. and yeah, amazon is great!

Guys, don't forget that many retailers don't order the discs if no one asks for them or buys them on-line only. Support everyone even if you have to pay a couple of bucks more now and then. I spread my buys around between 5 retailers and anything I can't get, I'll order from Amazon like Sky Blue. Toronto is killer for Blu-Ray selection. Prices may be a bit higher but considering the exchange rate, duty and shipping, ordering from Amazon it's no great deal that's for sure. Between HMV, Best Buy, FutureShop, Sunrise and World's Biggest Bookstore, I support anyone who carries the discs. The more sales they get, the more they order and the more that ends up on the shelves!

I never buy from Best Buy, cause they are terribly over-priced for almost any media. In fact, unless it is a sale item, Best Buy seldom beats online prices.
My biggest beef with this thread is why anyone who gets into blu-ray, and finds their way to this forum, (which is not the most well-known place if I judge by all my friends and relatives who I had to lead to this place, since none of them knew it) and yet your big beef with blu-ray is prices and stores not stocking the titles.
A year ago, I would have agreed with you stores were not stocking titles, but even Wal-Mart and Target are getting into the blu game now, and little by little, prices are getting better. Although online is ALWAYS the way to go to get the best deals.
From my own extensive purchase history on Amazon, I'd say the average price I pay for a title is 20 to 25. And free shipping for 25 bucks or more in purchase. It might not yet beat DVD's prices, but it is getting close.
And I would NEVER buy SD DVD over an available Blu one! You must be one of those ones who doesn't see any difference between SD and HD. Because if you really did, you would never go back to SD.
I just don't see why this thread got put out, if the HD-DVD war was still on, I'd almost say it was an attempt to flame blu-ray. Since it isn't going on, I'm a little puzzled.
yea man, u gotta relax... my best buy doesnt have THAT many blu rays either... maybe 1 full row.. i think its actually a shorter row though.. and they dont cary everything either.. i was lookin to get Into the Wild yesterday and they didnt have it... soooo relax... the guy who started the thread is simply takling.. its a conversation... try it out some time

As for your HDTV, no such thing a calibrating a TV, that is for audio, scanners and fax machines. What u are trying to do is configure your setting for both HDTV and playstation 3. Check both picture setup menus on HDTV & PS3 and make sure both are set to (1920 x 1080) 1080p. And it doesn't hurt to go thru your color setting for brightness and sharpness.

good luck
You just need to NOT post opinions/comments like this, when you obviously have no clue what you are talking about. There are just so many things in your post that make absolutely no sense or have nothing to do with the issues raised, I don't know where to begin.

As for the original statement regarding why BDs look 10X better in the stores, I'd say it has to do with what YOU think looks better. If you like the motion-enhancing crap on some of the LCDs, then that is probably why you 'think' BDs look so much better than at home. You have one of the top rated plasmas, and it will give you as close to the most natural picture you can achieve, but it will never look like the fake picture provided by motion-enhancing technology on some LCDs. If that's what you want, then you'll need to exchange your set.

OP, it just seems odd that your local BBy has such a small selection. Go to other stores. Honestly, BBy is not the best, although they are popular. As others have said, Amazon is the way to go, but you should always shop around before ranting. There are many online retailers that sell BD titles for far less than brick and mortar stores, some with free shipping.
As long as the quality of the video is still impressive to you, than all you have to do is shop around and wait. If you don't see the prices you want now, you will in 2009. The player pries dropped significantly in 2008, but the movies will have to drop in 2009.
