The Crying Game, awesome movie, but I wouldn't say it's a gay movie. It only became a "gay" movie after everyone knew the twist. Milk was great and I thought it did a pretty good job of showing the man warts and all. Gods and Monsters and Far from Heaven were pretty good too.

But I'm gonna have to go with QT. Top Gun is the gayest movie and it sucks. What do I know? I don't like Cher, Streisand or Gone With the Wind. Guess I have to give my gay card back.
Whaaaaattttt???? Another 'mo in Birmingham, Alabama right here on this site? I don't belive it!!! Of course I have to disagree about Brokeback. I thought it was a wonderful movie.

Guess I'll have to give my gay card back too as I don't like Cher, Streisand or even Celine. I do like Gone With the Wind, but not because it's popular with gay's. It's just a great classic movie IMO.

It showed the internal conflict/struggle of a seemingly normal guy and brought awareness to more people than just appealing to a niche audience.
I don't like to many gay movies either because most of them deal with AIDS or coming out like those are the only issues we have to deal with. Most of the stereotyped characters in the movies are real though.

The Birdcage is just an Americanized ripoff/remake of a far superior La Cage aux Follies. A film from France.

Brokeback Mountain, La Cage aux Follies, The Closet (another French film), Monster, Chasing Amy and Gia (Angelina Jolie and full frontal nudity for all you straight guys out there) are some of my favs.

Oh, and one more. Sordid Lives.

I suppose the first one I have ever seen (that I can recall) would be :

Making Love (1982) with Kate Jackson, Harry Hamlin, and Michael Ontkean.

It is funny that you mention that.

All of my gay friends (including a gay uncle) believe that Brokeback was complete hogwash because it was written by a woman and all key roles were played by straight people. Having said that...how card carrying and flag waving can it be??

It's not supposed to be card carrying and flag waving. That's the whole point and one of the reasons I love it so much. It is so far from being stereotypical that it's more realistic to gay guys like myself. I mean just because it doesn't have a bunch of drag queens or bull dykes and a soundtrack from Cyndi Lauper and K.D. Lang doesn't make it complete hogwash. It just sounds like your friends and uncle are heterophobic.

Exactly. I'm gay and I definitely support the cause, but you probably won't find me out waving a flag in a parade (not that I diss those who do that). I enjoyed Brokeback--it wasn't one of the 'all time best' films, but it did a good job of showing two masculine characters experiencing something deemed immoral by society. Heath's character especially underwent some serious self-loathing that a lot of gay people go through.

This isn't a movie, but I loved the lesbian relationship in Buffy the Vampire Slayer between Willow and Tara because the relationship lasted several years and was treated like every other heterosexual relationship on the show. In fact, Willow/Tara is one of the most romantic couples in the history of television. Sure, Will and Grace may have helped the cause some, but a lot of it was still very stereotypical.

I don't mind the 'gay and proud' people, but being gay is a part of who I am... it isn't my defining characteristic which is what a lot of gay people seem to act like. Shoving something down someone's throat distastefully isn't going to cause them to accept you more.

My fave would have to be Another Country - starring a young Colin Firth and Rupert Everett.

I disagree. I think it IS stereotypical. There is just as much stereotype in the hyper-masculine "gay cowboy", porn stache, tom of finland imagery as there is in the uber-drag of Too Wong Foo... Not that it isn't entertaining, just not very realistic, IMHO. ***WARNING*** Soapbox moment coming...Maybe Hollywood does this so were easy to pick out in a movie. If we look and act too much like everyone else, it makes us harder to identify and therefore harder to hate. (End soapbox moment.)

And not to single you out, but funny how all the straight dudes pick Bound and Chasing Amy which both feature hot lesbi-action. Totally understandable (bow-chicka-bow-wow) I've never seen Chasing Amy personally. I have seen Bound and thought is was pretty cool. I've always though both Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly straddled the fence, if ya know what i mean.
