You're probably right. On a side note, I just found out that Neofilms/Deltamac of Hong Kong is re-releasing their Region-A (and English-friendly!) BD of Eva 1.11 this week.

Bad Panda Shop
Play-Asia
YesAsia

Their release of 3.33 was very good (as I own a copy), so I would assume that this release of 1.11 would be of the same high A/V quality. As far as I'm aware it's the same disc as their earlier 2018 LE release but in standard Amaray packaging. That means it'll be a BD-50 with the following audio/subtitle specs:
  • Japanese DTS-HD MA 5.1
  • Japanese Dolby 2.0
  • Cantonese Dolby 2.0
  • English subtitles
  • Traditional Chinese subtitles
As long as you don't need a dub, this should be a sufficient substitute to paying $50+ on eBay for the Funimation release.

I'd like to have the dub so the HK release is a no go for me. Guess I have to wait and see if Funimation rereleases it (if they still have the license, which I assume they do) or someone else gets it, I'm not about to spend a ton on eBay.

I'd rather a competent company, not FAILimation, actually get Eva. Not too keen on GKids, to be honest.

I kind of hope Funi still has the movies just so the last one will have the same dub cast lol

Discotek would be great.

You might try the Zima Mexican release of Evangelion it's Region A

1.11 & 2.22 have the Funimation English dubs on them, 3.33 however only has Japanese & Spanish.

It's also a BD-25 with lossy Dolby 5.1 audio, so it's not really something that should be recommended to anyone but hardcore dub-watchers.

I'm going to wait until a physical release of Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0.lands until I affirm if Funimation has lost the license or not. If Funimation acquires North America distribution rights for the new Evangelion - they might do a quadrilogy release with all four films in one package/box set.

If Funimation doesn't get distribution rights, then I'll believe their license expired. I'll wait on purchasing the previous three films until then.

Yeah, there's got to be a tetralogy box set once the fourth is released. I can't imagine otherwise.

Maybe years after unless a different company somehow manages to acquire Evangelion.

Wasn't the HK release of 2.22 also on a BD-25?

Would love to know if anyone gets the new HK 1.11 release and how it stacks up but wasn't the Funi version not that bad? I know their 3.33 is atrocious but i thought the first 2 releases were pretty good.

Yes, the HK release of 2.22 is on a BD25 and is noticably worse than releases on BD50s.

Hopefully 3.0+1 gets released by a different distributor in a steelbook so that every installment of the rebuild looks totally mismatched with the others on my shelf. I'd hate to see partial consistency this late in the game from Funi.

I really hope GKids gets it so we can get a proper release in theaters (when it's safe). I bet if they did license the film series they would most likely play all 4 which would be amazing. And we would get some great physical editions (regular, steelbook, collectors edition).

Everything they did for the Promare release was stellar and should be the gold standard imo.

They were pretty good, except they replaced all the Japanese-language telop screens (such as from the "Next Episode Preview") and the end credit rolls with English replacements using a very generic font (Tahoma perhaps?) that had absolutely no place in a modern anime release.

Not to mention that Funi only translated like 5 names in the end credits of 2.22, so there's... huge... gaps... between... most of the names. As much as I like the "Planitb Acoustica Mix" of Beautiful World, it's interminable to sit through without the rainbow-text effects of the original Japanese 2.22 end-credit reel.

Stuff like that is why I also bougth the Taiwanese release of 1.11 and 2.22 (which are more or less straight ports of the JP releases but with only a Mandarin subtitle track) for cheap on eBay to go along with the Funi releases. Of course for 3.33 I got sick of the interminable waiting caused by Khara's displeasure with Funi's initial English localization and just bought the Hong Kong LE as my sole English-language copy. This proved to be prescient, as it has much better video quality that the US disc (as everyone knows).

Only if they keep the same dub cast. I don't want the final film to have lost the dub consistency.

I wouldn't be surprised if GKids got the rights to all four films as well as the TV show/older films for physical release.

I'd settle for the TV series (Episodes 1-26 & 21'-24') and Revival of Evangelion (i.e. Death[True]² + The End of Evangelion). Of course I'd like to have the original theatrical version of Death and Rebirth as well since it never was released on home video in the US (nor in Japan until the 2015 BD box set), but beggars can't be choosers.

It's just that it's the one version of Death that I don't have a physical copy of, as I do already have Death[True] from the 2015 "Archives of Evangelion" DVD box set. Oddly enough, Death[True] is not in the Japanese BD box as it was basically produced for WOWOW's premium satellite TV service (it aired in January 1998, well before the movies hit Japanese home video) and thus that particular version probably only ever existed in standard def to begin with.

One of these companies is gonna have to bite the bullet and get the rights. They're sitting on so much money.

I hope they all gets re-released when the fourth movie is out in 2021.

Since GKIDS just got the rights for Neon Genesis Evangelion/Evangelion: Death (True)/The End of Evangelion, is it possible that they'll also acquire the rights for these movies too?
