I never got into the Evangelion series (thought the main kid was annoying). I would like to see it now that it's HD and in movie form, for maybe the 10th time. But even now there are all these different versions and it's totally not clear what's what. Out of these options: 1.11, 1.0, 2.0 which is the series boiled down to a movie?

Here's a good review on the 1.11 Blu-ray movie: ![]() Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone Blu-ray These movies are basically the whole series all over again but in HD, and a lot longer then the previous Evangelion animated movies. I saw 1.11 in theaters while I was in Japan. It basically covers just a portion of the begining of the TV series with a few new bits added in and a huge suprise towards the end.
Im really looking foward to the rest of the movies because they branch off of the TV series and start adding in a lot of new stuff. I really want to know whats going to happen (especially after the ending sceen of 1.11) |

1.11 has a couple (relatively unimportant) extra scenes, its big selling point compared to the previous 1.01 DVD-only release is the greatly-improved picture quality (that and it is on BD.) Next up is Eva 2.22 (the revised 2.0) which is yet to be licensed in the US and won't even be put out on BD in Japan until this May. Funimation will most likely license 2.22 for the US, but they'll probably be slow as hell with it again. I'm 99% sure that they won't repeat the 1.01/1.11 dual release strategy for any of the subsequent movies...

Here's everything you need to know about Evangelion home video releases:
----------- Shin Seiki Evangelion = Neon Genesis Evangelion -------- Neon Genesis Evangelion is the original 26-episode TV series from 1995. Currently available on DVD in boxset form from ADV Films / Section23. Note that there were 2 main release types for this series: the original DVD singles from 2001-2 (8 in total; they were collected in the "Perfect Collection" box soon after) and the later, much-improved "Platinum" version. I highly recommend getting one the Platinum editions (either the 7-DVD Holiday Edition "brick" for on-disc extras, or the 6-DVD "Platinum Complete" thinpak box for a higher video bitrate.) "Death and Rebirth" and "The End of Evangelion" were theatrical movies released in 1997. D&R was a recap of the TV series ("Death") with part of the first half of EoE following afterwards ("Rebirth"). EoE was the "alternate ending" (episodes 25-prime and 26-prime) to the TV series. Both movies were released (separately and later in a boxset) by Manga Entertainment on DVD in the US but are currently out of print. You can still get them on eBay pretty easily. There are no BD versions available anywhere in the world for the Evangelion TV series, Death and Rebirth, or End of Evangelion. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Evangelion Shin Gekijoban = Evangelion New Theatrical Version = Rebuild of Evangelion 2007's "Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone" (note the lack of "Neon Genesis") was the first of a planned four movies in the "Rebuild of Evangelion" tetrology, which is a retelling (with some changes) of the Evangelion story. It was first released on DVD with a few tweaks as Evangelion 1.01, then subsequently remastered and tweaked again (although the 2 minutes of added scenes are largely unimportant; no major plot points are added) for a DVD and BD release as Evangelion 1.11. To date, 1.11 is the definitive version of the first movie. Eva 1.01 on DVD and Eva 1.11 on DVD and BD have all been released in the US by Funimation. BTW, the BD of 1.11 is excellent, I recommend it highly. 2009's "Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance" is the 2nd of the 4 movies. If the 1st movie seemed too much like the TV series, the 2nd movie really moved in a completely different direction in terms of plot. Unlike the first movie, only one version (numbered as 2.22) was released on home video. Just like the 1.11 BD, the 2.22 BD from Funimation is great. "Evangelion 3.0: Q (Quickening)" and "Evangelion: Final" have not had a theatrical release date in Japan yet, and are still in production. Last edited by svenge; 04-21-2011 at 11:30 AM. |

TV series was with ADV Films so don't expect it anytime soon unless Funimation is able to grab it from them. The original animated movies are with Manga(or at least I think they still are) but they seem to have not cared about it since they released that double pack that came with the mousepad and that double sided poster.

Bandai has the series and the movie but considering that Japan doesn't even have it on Blu-ray yet probably be awhile before America gets it especially since we haven't even had a dvd release of the movie yet.

Agreed. Svenge, you have done an excellent job in eliminating a lot of confusion. So, let me start some brand new confusion...
I have no exposure to EVANGELION. None. Zip. Nada. Where should I begin? Should I just watch these bluray re-tellings of the original story -- presumably looking and sounding better than anything that's been released to date? Or do I go back and watch the original 26 episodes? I'm interested because this show is constantly recommended to me -- but those same people also give me conflicting advice on where to begin (and almost all of them tell me the ending to the original series is a disappointment.) Thoughts for an EVANGELION nube? |
