And finally regarding the two sub outputs, I give you our resident insider and sound expert Sir Terrence:

This is only splitting the deep bass from the mains to a subwoofer, it is not creating a all new channel. You may find deep bass in the front three channels and occasionally in the rears as well, but this is bass unique to that channel, and not all new bass.

There is no situation where a .2 is beneficial, but there is a multitude of evidence that it can be destructive. In small rooms where the wave lengths are very large below 80hz, destructive comb filtering can occur when you introduce two different bass signals together in that space. This will result in frequency abberations that are very audible in different points within the room. Dialog does not have deep bass, so this is a poor example.

Back in the 80's Tom Nousaine did an experiment on stereo bass, and his conclusions are it is not distinguishable from mono bass in listening test he performed.
Here's the whole post as it makes a bit more sense with the quotes thrown back in. Bottom line though- stereo subwoofer inputs is neither what they're going for, nor of any real benefit.

It is a 9.2 receiver. It matrixes two height channels (like Yamaha Presence speakers) and splits the extra subwoofer channel for you. The height speakers may be the main reason anyone would want to upgrade.

Just got my 607 and checked it out with Incredible Hulk and Transformers. Holy crap even with my existing HTIB speaker set the difference is HUGE. Especially after calibrateing everything with Audyssey. That was some money well spent, that's for sure.

Maybe the .2 is for a sub and a buttkicker or something along that line?

Default Onkyo TX-SR607 - Listening Mode Question

So I just picked up an Onkyo TX-SR607 at Best Buy yesterday and so far everything is great. I have it hooked up to my PS3 via HDMI and have all the audio settings configured. For some reason when watching blu-ray movies I am unable to switch the receiver listening mode to TrueHD even when the movie has a TrueHD audio track. Any ideas?

I have selected the DTS-HD/TrueHD audio track. I'll have to check to see if my Playstation 3 is set to bitstream. I believe I just did the auto configure for the audio

What PS3 do you own? Remember only the Slim PS3 can bitstream. The older model will decode Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA and sent them as LPCM via HDMI. On the older PS3 model, when you select the Dolby True HD or DTS HD MA audio tracks, the display in your 607 will read DVD and in smaller front (on top) pcm multichannel hdmi. You are getting the HD sound, just different lights show in the 607's display.

I have the older "fat" PS3, so that would explain it. Thank you very much for such a great explanation!

EDIT:

Just to make sure I understand... Should I leave my receiver's listening mode to "Direct" so it just plays the audio from the source?

Default Ps3

Set the receiver to PCM Multichannel. That way you'll be able to take advantage of the receiver's signal processing abilities.

I have the receiver set to PCM Multichannel. In addition to that setting it's giving me other options to select such as Dobly D, Direct, Pro Logic II, Neo6, DTS. Just trying to figure out which of these is going to produce the best quality audio

How many speakers do you have? If you have 7.1, you can try PLIIx. Otherwise, I would stick to PCM Multi. Of course it is up to you... Don't be afraid to experiment.

Thumbs up Settings

Yes, experiment with the different settings. IMHO, the PCM Multi will give the best sound.

Just wanted to note that Direct mode will disable most of the post-processing, so things like bass management are not available. Good for 2 channel full range (no sub) music listening (Pure Audio will also do that better), but for everything else you'll want PCM Multichannel.

Default Help - Onkyo TX-SR607

I am new to the entire HT setup so any help would be great. I am using a PS3 that is set to bitstream but I noticed that the Dolby True HD and DTS-HD lights don't come on. I do ensure that the proper sound is selected from the menu on the blu ray.

When I go to my menu under "Listening mode Preset" for "DVD/BD" everything is set at "Last Valid". I am not sure if I am even looking in the right place.

Please help.

Thanks

How do you have the sound connected to the receiver? HDMI I think is the only way to get the Dolby True HD and DTS-HD.

Everything is connected by HDMI and those lights still don't come on.
