it doesn't matter. star trek has never been able to grab a wider audience like they wanted. this movie will do well, but it won't do that well. it's star trek still.

And LOTR was a movie about little people trying to destroy a ring and it did well. Movies of all types can perform.

I meant he highest grossing movie is still a stupid romance about a boat sinking.

lord of the rings appeals to a lot of people though. and many, many different people have read the book. star trek doesn't appeal to many, many different people. it appeals to a select number of people. not enough to drive it home for box office gold over $400 million. titanic is also a movie with mass appeal. that is the difference.

Titanic appealed to girls that love Leonardo Dicaprio. Who had money and time after school to watch it again and again.

While I like LOTR I would never watch it more than once.

This Star Trek is different and will change peoples perception of it. People always relate Star Trek with nerds and JJ will change that.

I'm going to see it because it does look great. I'm def. not a Trek fan but this movie looks like it has a little more. For all you people comparing Wolverine to Star Trek I also had to choose, with money issues, what to see Wolverine or Star Trek? I'm choosing Trek because of what ppl said and what I've seen from previews.

I agree. I do not think that this movie will be as big as many people think it will be.

there's no doubt it's going to attract a new core group of fans, but it just doesn't have the mass appeal because....well, its star trek

I beg to disagree. I reluctantly watched LOTR and found that the trilogy turned out to be well made. Having said that, however, I didn't have any urge to read the books and still don't. When I first saw Fellowship of the Rings, my reaction was OMG, it dragged. It took an hour for them to get out of Hobbitton and worse, the movie ended with the fellowship being busted up. It wasn't until the Two Towers when the story moved along and the pieces started to come together that LOTR actually caught my interest. Over time, after a few viewings under different mood that I came to like the trilogy as a whole.

With Titanic, it's main draw was Leo for teenage girls. I do think that it is a good movie much like many movies by James Cameron. However, it is still a chick flick. Box office for Titanic is more of an exception than the rule.

Star Trek, in whatever form and under whatever stereotype, is still more widely known. Just like Star Wars and Bond, it is an established franchise regardless of an individual opinion. Star Trek, like LOTR, do have a core fan base. And like LOTR, the fans are highly invested in it. I find it funny how fans of one genre think that they are better than another. LOTR have hard-core fans that actually want colleges to teach elfish (a purely madeup language for the books).

Granted, Star Trek do have its share of fans that meet the stereotype but it does have mass appeal. The mass appeal is not about Star Trek but more about sci-fi and technology. Just like many good sci-fi, any Star Trek movie with a well-written story will be watchable by the casual movie goer. It also shows that most Star Trek fans also do appreciate other good film entertainment of differing variety. As a matter-of-fact, many of the current technologically based products that we enjoy today were inspired by the fictional technology of Star Trek. Star Trek is part of the popular culture and it's also part of the current lexicon since the late 60s. Heard of the cell phones or the blue tooth hands devices, anybody?

I don't expect Star Trek to necessarily do the numbers that TDK, Titanic, Iron Man, SW and other blockbusters tend to do. However, with the buzz, I hope it will do somewhat respectable because as a fan, I'd like to be able to see an expansion to this interesting 40+ year old sci-fi universe and more sequels. Why? Because it's fun to see what's next.

Fandango is reporting 81% of online ticket sales are for Star Trek this weekend. Also they are saying the Thursday night showings are selling out and more screens are being added.

Some interesting polling on the people buying tickets:

Quote:
There are also some interesting polls. MovieTickets.com found that, among almost 6,000 moviegoers, 32% have never seen a Star Trek movie, while 10% have seen all 10 Star Trek movies.

Fandango surveyed more than 4,000 moviegoers planning to see Star Trek and found: 83% plan to see the movie on opening weekend; 10% plan to show up at the theater in some kind of Star Trek costume; 48% are fans of producer-director JJ Abrams; 47% are fans of Heroes star Zachary Quinto; and 67% are male.

I hope this film does good, it really does deserve it.
It has mass appeal to those who show intrest, and all you lot should go as well.
The only problem is the film is realesed on the same weekend speed racer was and that did bad plus star trek seems really uncool, atleast to me, I probalby wouldn't be bovvered if it wern't for JJ Abrams

I say it will open with a gross in the neighborhood of $120 mil and make around $750 or more overall domestically. Hard to judge the overseas grosses on it, but it should fare well. When it's all said and done, it'll probably do around the same business Dark Knight did, if not better.

I won't say it will make as much money as dark knight, that film was an anomnally, but I hope it does make fair business, and people will go back and see it more than once
