[Show spoiler] 10/01/18 ![]() “A” is for Apple “B” is for Bed “C” is for Coed “D” is for Dead “F” is for Failing…you keep your HEAD! -Night School * (1981): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tepid slasher about a killer (clad head-to-toe in black leather and wearing a motorcycle helmet) butchering his merry way through a succession of young students at a small Boston college, and how the detective assigned to the case (Leonard Mann) investigates the Professor (Drew Snyder) whose anthropology class the women all attended. The film debut of Rachel Ward (who plays the Prof’s live-in assistant/mistress), Night School – not to be confused with the Kevin Hart “comedy” currently playing in theaters – has a certain stylishness to it (photography by David Cronenberg and Wes Craven favorite Mark Irwin, music by a pre-Terminator Brad Fiedel), and native Bostonians will enjoy a lot of the dawn-of-the-80s Beantown location footage, but it’s all ultimately a bit rote, with too many obvious Red Herrings being dangled in the audience’s faces. Far from the worst of its ilk, but also not very distinguished. Ward's gratuitous nude scene is a definite highlight. -Body Bags * (1993): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Enjoyable – if uneven – Showtime television anthology feature (intended as a potential pilot for their own Tales From The Crypt-style series that never came to fruition) features director John Carpenter happily hamming it up as a desiccated mourge attendant telling a trio of gruesome tales about those waiting for their autopsies. In “The Gas Station” (directed by Carpenter), a newly-hired overnight gas station employee (Alex Datcher) finds herself terrorized by a madman in this briskly-paced piece, with solid suspense and good gore. In “Hair” (also by Carpenter), a vain middle-aged man (Stacy Keach) bemoans the state of his rapidly-thinning pate, but when he goes to a new doctor (David Warner) for a cure, he gets far more than he bargained for. It’s a pretty rote, Rod Serling-esque comeuppance tale. And in “The Eye” (directed by the late Tobe Hooper), a baseball player (Mark Hamill…!) loses an eye in a terrible car accident, and shortly thereafter receives a transplant from a recently-deceased donor…only to find himself tormented by horrible visions from the eye’s previous owner. Gruesome and compelling, with a great performance by Hamill. Only the middle segment of this decent anthology feature really disappoints, and Carpenter’s host segments are mordantly funny, as he swills formaldehyde cocktails and drops excruciating/amusing Crypt Keeper-style puns. No classic, but Carpenter fans out to enjoy it. -Pumpkinhead * (1988): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A group of young “city folk” (including Jeff East, teenage Clark Kent from Superman: The Movie), fooling around on their motorbikes at a rural produce stand, accidentally but mortally wound the son of the proprietor (genre fave Lance Henriksen), causing him, in his bereavement and anger, to seek out a local backwoods witch, who assists him in conjuring up a fearsome, ghastly monster that sets out to hunt down and kill all of those responsible for his son’s death. The directorial debut of the great creature and makeup designer Stan Winston (The Terminator, Aliens, Predator and numerous others), this is a modest yet impressive film, with an eerie, rustic setting and top-notch practical effects on the titular monster. Look fast for a young Mayim Bialik. |

![]() ![]() 1. HALLOWEEN 3 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For the 4th year in a row and I'm pretty sure permanently leading off my marathon, here it is. I saw this for the first time on tv when I was growing up and have loved it ever since. It's either my favorite or tied with the first one in the series. I will definitely watch this again later this month when I marathon the series. [Show spoiler]

1. Psycho II (1983) [FTV]
Really well made sequel that I'd actually put on a par with Hitchcock's classic. Part mystery, part character study, this densely plotted thriller provides a fascinating insight into the essentially tragic character of Norman Bates. Anthony Perkins does an exceptional job here. 2. Twice-Told Tales (1963) [FTV] As an ardent fan of both horror anthologies and Vincent Price, this vintage flick based upon the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne was a must-see for me. Pretty decent overall - with the first segment being my personal highlight. Not quite on a par with some of the later Amicus anthology movies from the 70s, but definitely worth a look. |

House on Haunted Hill (1999)
![]() I can get why many folks don't like this updated version, but it always hit on all cylinders for me. Cheesy perhaps, but more and more I admire the playfulness of the script--that and the performances makes it all work in the film's favor. SFX are overblown and haven't aged well, but the film's mastery over uncanny details (things that seem off--ghosts with spinning heads, montages of creepy things) has always crept under my skin. Yep, I think this film is a great freak-fest. The new SF edition looks pretty good (seems bright to me, but maybe I'm tripping), but there are moments that looked really soft to my eyes and I wasn't sure if it was source limitations or what. Sound quality is awesome though. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Body Count: 1 Film [Show spoiler] 2016 Body Count | 2015 Body Count | 2014 Body Count 2013 Body Count | 2012 Body Count | 2011 Body Count 2010 Body Count Last edited by Al_The_Strange; 10-01-2018 at 09:16 PM. |

"I met him, 15 years ago; I was told there was nothing left; no reason, no conscience, no understanding in even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, of good or evil, right or wrong. I met this... six-year-old child with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and... the blackest eyes - the Devil's eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up, because I realized that what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... evil."
Halloween [1978; First Watch (2018 Lionsgate UHD)] ![]() Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Analysis: Aged 16 and a sophomore in 1978, the year Halloween was released, I have very vivid memories of seeing this film with a group of friends, guys and girls, some from high school, some from the neighborhood. More than a film, and a very well directed one at that, a rite of passage. Just like a few other events from '78 where I have vivid memories, such as Blue Oyster Cult (whose classic Don't Fear The Reaper is featured in the film) with Rush at the then Nassau Coliseum, on Friday the 13th, no less. Speaking of more, did I mention the ice storm that took down the power grid and delayed the LIRR until the early morning hours? Well, that's another story, so I'll end this one by saying thanks to the UHD disc, Halloween has never looked better. |

9/30 - Life (2017) -
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1st time seeing the film since I saw it in theaters. Loved it then and still love it now. Still upset we arent getting a sequel. It was setup so perfect for a sequel. Calvin was a beast and the film had a very good cast. Visually beautiful film in 4K and overall fun experience. The ending is still a jaw dropper. |

All movies will be first time viewings!
![]() 10/1: Summer of '84 ![]() ![]() ![]() From the creators of Turbo Kid(love that movie!) comes a movie that had SO MUCH POTENTIAL but squandered it on an inconsistent tone and no character development between the 4 friends. Also, where's the soundtrack filled with 80's gems from that year?! A sort of R rated Stranger Things crossed with Disturbia. Teen thinks his next door neighbor is a serial killer and drags his 3 friends into his crazy theory. Has decent enough suspense but just wish I knew the 4 friends better. I knew the Goonies. I knew the Stand by Me kids. These guys are just caricatures (the fat guy, the nerd, the "cool" kid). The last 15 minutes turns into a whole different movie. I really wanted to like this more than I did but just middle of the road. |
