Agreed. I'll quickflix the extended edition but will not buy another copy untill it's the 3d release.

I am sort of wishing I held off until now.

Oh well... have too many other movies to buy right now.

How can you call a special edition with hours of supplements, a filler release? Cameron said that after this one, the 3D release will hit the streets, and that's it. No more re-releases.

Every movie has at least two versions: simple DVD/special edition DVD (BR, whatever).

Avatar has the same two editions.

So what's the problem?

3D?

May I ask how many people could enjoy 3D BD? Do you want movie splitting on 2 disks? And price would be more expensive.

So for what reason people who doesn't have 3D panels should pay more?

Jeez, guys. Use your brains a bit.

When the 3D blu ray comes, if it's barebones (most likely) then people will complain and if it comes with the special features, people will complain that they're 'been forced' to re-buy all the special features or that there's no new ones.

^ Supplementals wouldn't be in 3D. No reason include them on 3D release. But who knows. I think JC simply wants new 100gb single blu ray disk for 3D.

Exactly. This is far from a filler release. Either buy the Collector's Edition for the loaded release that it is or wait for the 3D release. It's pretty simple.

I am sure it has been talked about before, but I am not at all interested in the bonus materials. Does anyone know if it will be worth it for the extended movie alone. I am guessing I can buy the original/current release used for pretty cheap. I was just about to do it, but I might wait for the extended release.

The extended edition is on my Christmas list. I'm not interested in a release when it's barebones and the studio has already announced a definitive version. I'm looking forward to watching the special features for this one, and frankly, I expect them to be more interesting than the film itself.

1. Most fans would probably argue that the barebones 1st release was the "filler"
2. This is the version the majority of the fans have been waiting for
3. 3D release is a couple years out and will be the last release on Blu, Cameron says.

Read the signature

The 3D version should come in 2 versions. A 2 disc set containing just the movie in 3D and a 4 disc set containing the 2 discs of extras.

So apparently the word is that James Cameron is going to go ahead with making Avatar 2 & 3 in 48FPS(+)

what does this mean for an eventual blu-ray release?

Panasonic’s Exclusive Avatar 3D Blu-ray Offer Detailed

First details have surfaced regarding the terms for the Panasonic promotion offering a 3D Blu-ray version of James Cameron's Avatar. As previously reported (see Blu-ray.com, September 3), this 3D BD will be exclusively available starting December 1, as part of a bonus Panasonic 3D Ultimate Pack, to new buyers of any Panasonic Full HD 3D TV. Other buyers of Panasonic 3D TVs also qualify to receive the Avatar 3D Blu-ray.

The 3D Ultimate Pack consists of one Avatar Blu-ray 3D Disc and two pairs of Panasonic 3D eyeglasses.

A similar promotion will also be offered in France, according to HD-Motion.

The disc will also be available to customers who purchased a Panasonic 3D TV prior to December 1, through the Viera 3D TV Loyalty Program. Consumers should mail a copy of the qualifying TV receipt to Panasonic. The disc will then be mailed directly to the consumer. The mail-in address and disc request form will be available on the Panasonic website starting December 1.

In February, Avatar director James Cameron had said to the Wall Street Journal that a 3D Blu-ray of the movie would come out in November (see Blu-ray.com, February 18). That was promptly denied by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment with a note that said verbatim: "3D is in the conceptual stage and Avatar will not be out on 3D Blu-ray in November" (see Blu-ray.com, February 19).

I remember something awhile back about him saying how he didn't like 24FPS and wished 60P was adopted.

Right on all three counts, at least for me. I will enjoy this Collector's edition.

Apparently, Avatar 2 & 3 will be shot back to back and release dates for them are december 2014 & 2015 respectively.

Ok, great.

Now after that awesome Aliens restoration, he better do "The Terminator", "The Abyss (Special Edition)" and "True Lies". Seriously, these films (especially T1) are long overdue proper blu ray releases.
