I watched the new USA remaster of JP (93) last night. I think it did look just a touch better than previous 4K release and as usual Dolby Vision kept skin tones more consistent and natural than HDR10 alone.

Was pretty bummed by the Atmos track though. My heights were active frequently, but overall I think the previous DTS:X track was more balanced despite it's more constrained dynamic range. Anyone else have thoughts? I was switching between the two audio tracks after for the raptor feeding scene and I think unfortunately I'm going to set the DTS:X track as default.

Putting all you rankers aside, I've found it hilarious that folks be calling out others for not having/wanting high enough standards for a film of JP's 'stature' in the wake of these new old transfers. Hilarious because to some I'm the arch-complainer, never happy with so much as a single pixel of anything I see, but now the shoe's on the other hand and I'm someone who's guilty of 'settling' for anything less than absolute mimetic perfektion to what it looked like on 35mm in 1993.

I saw it in the cinema in 1993. To this day I'll swear that I saw Laura Dern pluck the leaf when the jeep drives thru the forest, but it was my mind merging the trailer and the movie together. Given the fallibility of my memory there I won't dare make any claims as to what it looked like. I've bought it so many times since on VHS, LD, DVD, Blu and now UHD and it still thrills me like few other movies. I like to think I'm as invested as anyone else. But I just can't get as hung up on the colour timing as others. It's changed from version to version, transfer to transfer, like so many other movies before and since, and I've never become too attached to whatever 'look'. As long as it's not been saddled with the usual home mastering foibles (sharpening, DNR (dat 3D version, yikes) and/or shoddy compression) then I'll take anything as it comes, because it's all a revision. Doesn't mean I'll like everything I see as taste is still a personal thing, but it's just that: if I like it then I like it, if I don't then I won't cling to 32-year-old memories or apocryphal fluff like "it's a scary movie, it's supposed to be DARK" to support my viewpoint.

Also: Yes, I get it that people regard this movie as some sort of sacrosanct cinematic document. I'd love it if it got an amazing new indie-style transfer tomorrow with all the opticals and VFX unf*cked and a teal-tastic colour grade on top, but when dealing with a studio infamous for its transfer-related fudgery and *potentially* a director who doesn't really give a shit (JP being the price Spielberg had to pay to make Schindler's List), as well as the general apathy of the major studios to revisit titles with existing 4K transfers, or even just new encodes a la Sony, then I'm amazed it turned out as decent-ish as it did on the first UHD and even more amazed that it's been redone. It's not some sparkling new transfer but they have seemingly rolled back some of the filtering and tweaked the colour a lil' bit, as well as adding Dobly (for how big/little a difference that ultimately makes), and as someone who loves their marginal gains then I'll take what I can get.

I know that this sends a dreadful message to the powers that be etc etc, but as I done said before I'd sell all your souls for a properly encoded Apollo 13 UHD with the black clipping fixed and if buying these rejigged JP flicks gets me a little bit closer to that goal - well, not just that but Uni revisiting more of their early UHDs like Sony have been, which could in turn spread to other studios - then I'm happy to oblige them. Who knows, it may encourage proper new transfers if they feel the returns are worth it e.g. Bourne Identity. If we do get more reissues in the future, ones that people do appreciate, then alls I'll say is: "you're welcome".

Sorry for this tedious LanceL-style baring of my forums soul, but I wanted to say my piece.

My experience with Gruv has been the opposite. I've placed 3 orders with them and all arrived in a bubble mailer with some degree of shipping damage. I'm always kind of surprised to read other's experiences about receiving their orders in a box. I wonder if it varies depending on where you live.

Maybe it does. I'm in Northeast Texas. Granted I've placed far fewer orders with Gruv as opposed to Amazon but in every instance where I was wary of using them, they came through. I don't think I've ever even gotten a scratched disc from them. Though that's got less to do with them than it does just plain ol' luck of the draw but....still. It's something. But yeah, I'm just sharing my experience. Not making a declaration of any kind lol.

FYI also....I never receive my Gruv orders in a box or a bubble mailer. I always get those things people refer to as "ravioli." Which is accurate. I'm not crazy about those things but I've never gotten anything damaged out of one so....maybe they're secretly great!

I sampled the first twenty minutes of this one and I thought it looked pretty great for what it is. I just remember the old disc looking too soft and not just for the cg scenes.

Amazon updated that the JW Steelbook is now coming on July 2 as well. I preordered both steels on the same day, not sure why the JW steel is delayed for them. Well, the Walmart order said it was going to be here by this Thursday. I rather 2 days late than July 2 lol

Sigh. Yeah. After years of speculating on what a film that reunited the original main cast might look like, Trevorrow delivered unto us…that. lol

Mind you, my bar for all of these past the original has been more than low. JPIII for instance is 90-something minutes of pure dumb fun and I love it. Endlessly watchable. But Dominion? Honestly the only JP film that I couldn’t even enjoy from a turn-your-brain-off perspective.

Admittedly the extended cut does have that cool Jurassic-era prologue where we get to see some quasi-accurate dinos. And the other reinstated bits do at least lend some coherence to an otherwise remarkably hamfisted narrative. Beyond that though it’s still a zero stakes, not-fun monster movie with few, if any, genuine thrills.

Hands down The Exorcist II of this franchise as far as I’m concerned.

My favorite part of Dominion must have been based on this question: "Remember how in the original JP Alan and Lex were hiding from the T-Rex behind a car? What if this time it was 27 people?"

Once again proving myself completely out of step with... well, just about everyone... I though Dominion was the most fun since Lost World. <shrug> Although the one with the big castle full of dinos had the best score since the first JW -- and that went a long way with me.

Jurassic Park **** (out of 5)
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ***
Jurassic World **1/2
Jurassic Park III ** or **1/2
The Lost World: Jurassic Park **
Jurassic World Dominion *1/2

Apparently I'm in the minority but I genuinely believe Fallen Kingdom is the best of the sequels. It has to overcome the boring-ass Jurassic World characters and a first half that's nearly a beat-for-beat remake of Lost World, but in the second half it turns outrageously dumb, becomes a haunted house horror movie (complete with the Indoraptor howling at the moon like a gosh dang werewolf), and Michael Giacchino pumps up the choral bombast. Guilty pleasure.

And apologies to all the Lost World truthers on here, but apart from the trailer over the cliff sequence and a few moments here and there, it's maybe the most lifeless thing Steven Spielberg has ever directed. Sure, there's a mean streak to it that fits with the unleashing of nature, but I find it to be an unintended and unpleasant side effect of a director too checked out with blockbuster filmmaking at that point in his career to really care. Also, poor Julianne Moore plays one of the stupidest characters in the franchise.

Still better than Dominion, tho. Cripes, what a stinker. Hoping to catch the Extended Cut before I see Rebirth out of morbid curiosity, but I doubt it'll make a difference.

Yeah I wasn't expecting that, I went into that one blindly and thought it was fun and had some tension and I was curious where the next film would go or could it live up to it's ending.... (I haven't seen the followup yet!)

Well we may be all over the place on how we feel about any of the sequels, but everyone seems to agree the original film is in a class by itself. The rest is like arguing over the Jaws sequels or the Resident Evil movies or something, lol.

It looks like this new one is taking a back to basics approach, and I like Gareth Edwards, so maybe we’ll all be agreeing that Rebirth is the best one since the first
