The older cabinet is not a bad one. It is smaller and tuned around 35Hz. It is more appropriate for a car subwoofer than a home theater sub.

In car audio, the low frequency rarely goes below 30Hz. Therefore, subwoofer boxes are tuned 30Hz-40Hz. Since human hearing is more sensitive to upper bass frequencies and car audio fanatics are bass freaks, that works perfectly for them. You can hear the bass sound from 10 blocks away.

In home theater applications, the low frequency of some recennt movies go down to 20Hz or below. When a driver is put in a box that is tuned around 35Hz, a significant portion of the sound will be below this tuning. The driver will receive no support from the back waves in the box under the tuned frequency and will unload and can extend beyond its capability and fail. That is why HT subwoofer boxes are tuned in the low 20's or below. One of the advantages of polyfill is that it slightly lowers the tuning frequency of the box. Not only will the subwoofer sound better and tighter, the driver will also receive more support and last longer.

To make a box tuned lower, you need to make it larger and make the length of the port longer.

If you have a subwoofer box that is tuned too high, you should add a subsonic filter to it to block very low frequency waves.

I paid $100 for this box, including shipping. It is a 15" box and can be used by anyone who needs it. I am willing to give it away. Unfortunately, shipping will probably cost around $30 or more.

That was your lesson for today. There will be a quiz tomorrow.
Ok Big Daddy . I will make sure I don't log in tomorrow until I have read it 10 times ~ Then I will log in

I want to try to use my current isolation/riser pad for my SVS PC12. The SVS is a 16" dia but my current pad is about 2" short on width and length. Do you still think it will perform, aka, do the job?

I don't see why not erict ! My concern would be are the legs on it far enough that it would not fall off with A big rumble !

The SVS PC12 has a round base on the bottom. Here is a pic.

Do you mean the legs on the riser?

No , not the riser legs . The sub legs . If the sub legs are near the edge of the riser I would be concerned about it falling on A big rumble!
Or just make another riser , You know how easy that is !

Nothing to worry about with the SVS PC12, there are no legs

I know, but I was working yesterday and today I did all my yard work so I can play with it tomorrow It takes me 3 hours just to cut my grass and of course throw some college football in there and here I am getting ready to go out to a local jazz fest in town. Ahhh, some good BBQ food, great music and cooold beer, what a way to end the day. I will get plenty of rest so I have a clear head tomorrow and of course post pics

erict, I built a sub-riser for my SVS PC12-NSD sub and there are pics in my gallery of what I used and how I did it for my cylinder sub. For the platform, I used an 18" wide cutting board. The rest is basically the same as any DIY sub-riser.

Your round riser looks very nice. I spent most of the day building a couple of risers for my subs. I wanted to build a round one for my pc12-plus, but couldn't find a round cutting board at my nearest target, bed bath or home depot. So a rectangular one had to do. Here's some pics.

Thanks blue! I didn't want it to be too high, so I made them with 4" legs. But the sound has definitely improved (tighter and punchier bass) .

I see some people use risers for their fronts as well. Is this to improve bass response or get their tweeters closer to ear level, or both?

sunny , how tall is you're SVS , Having A sub up high can be quit impressive . I know this first hand with the way mine are right now !

My cylinder is 40" tall. On the riser, the total height is now 45".

Riff , I may be wrong but I think they do that to detach them from the floor !
Getting the tweeter level with the ear could be A good reason as well !
