They will be black which everyone will love but they'll be eco cases with no slipcovers and everyone here will start crying and complaining and start asking about replacement cases on eBay.

Blu-ray.com is nothing if not predictable.

Which makes Sony's strategy of showing off all this oversaturated digital 4K footage in their demo reels, then leading the charge with a film like Ghostbusters a bit of a headscratcher

That being said I'm not an early adopter and would prefer to have all the kinks worked out before I drop the cash to upgrade.
This crossed my mind when I bought my 4K television a few days ago. I'm under the impression that I'll be fine as far as enjoying the picture quality benefits when I do purchase an Ultra HD Blu-ray player for my television, but that I'll miss out on the surround sound audio advantages. No problem, since I do not have a surround sound system now anyway.

That in itself highlighted the lack of contemporary 4K finishes, even from the self-appointed 4K Kings, and it's a situation that hasn't improved over the last couple of years since the debut of 4K televisions. UHD Blu is gonna be made up of remastered catalogue titles and TV stuff for genuine 4K content, with upscaled 2K forming the bulk of the big 21st century releases.

As far as I know there aren't a standard for HDR and for what not for UHD TV's color systems.

I'm sorry, what's the difference? Don't 4K BDs still work in a regular BD player, just downscaled?

And honestly, my PS3 remains to be the best BD player on the market, so unless Sony makes it 100% 4K compatible, I see no reason to get a different player. Hell, the PS4 is not even as good as the PS3 in movie playback, especially when it comes to audio.

BTW, the cases should just stick to blue.

No, UHD BDs will not work in a standard BD player. However, UHD BD players are supposed to be able to downscale UHD BDs for standard HD television sets.

Worth mentioning again. UHD Blu-ray's only play on UHD Blu-ray players. They will play regular Blu-ray's though.

They will down-convert if attached to a 1080p set and look like super-duper regular Blu-ray's.

I don't think they will because they might confuse some people.

I disagree. I like the idea of having a different color case for UHD releases.

Sucks for DVD playback though. I noticed a massive improvement in DVD scaling when I switched to a standalone player.

I'm pretty excited about 4k. I know a lot of people here aren't. I'm not sure what the folks at 20th Century Fox are thinking. I'm not familiar with these launch titles, so they eliminate me as an early adopter. I don't expect much from a studio that hasn't released any blu-rays yet of their biggest star (Shirley Temple) and the reason they're still in business.

With the Ultra HD Blu-ray releases will there be new steelbook releases of titles or will there be a new specialty packaging altogether and not steelbook? Anyone have any theories on that?

I'm not fond of the prototype packaging. I hate the black and the 4k Ultra plastered on it. I'm hoping for something other than this. Also hoping they figure out a way to simplify it and not plaster "4k Ultra HD" on things as it's ugly to have that many words for it.

I'm excited for this new format simply because i haven't been able to get in on the initial wave of a new format for whatever reason. Would be cool to be able to start things off when it begins for once. If it catches on that is.

I think the studios learned that and are now taking a different approach or more evolutionary as you say.
And Yet Videodrome from Arrow sold out in less than 24 hours. Obviously there's a market still for older catalog titles, when we can count on them doing it competently, something the bigger studios seem to have an issue with (look at Universal's release of Videodrome for an example).

They should drop the "4K" part of the packaging. It's disingenuous at best, particularly for the titles they're starting with.

Then again, what else are they going to do? I'm not convinced that HDR is going to make as big a splash as others seem to think.

So people complained. The studios listened and started going back to source to create brand new transfers which pleased pretty much everyone, only by then the damage was done in terms of catalogue sales and the format war certainly didn't help either. I don't think the impact of that snafu can be underestimated, and now UHD Blu-ray has its own competition with the multitude of on-demand 4K options.
Bingo.

Agreed. Blue cases will just confuse people with blue blu-ray cases. The color should be different to make it easy to tell the difference. It's bad enough that Best Buy mixes together DVD and blu-ray on the shelf. At least it's easy to identify based on the size and color of the cases. Now imagine UHD cases that are the same size and color - it will be a nightmare telling blu-ray from UHD.

All one would have to do is look for the 4k on the case? It didn't seem to confuse people with 3D as you can clearly see where it's marked 3D on cases.

"Ultra 4K" / "Blu-ray 3D" / "Blu-ray" / "Digital"

Seems like it would be easy to distinguish. Maybe add a minimalist flare to the 4k to signal it's presence like an orange [orange goes good with blue as an accent imo/or white, or silver] halo or something, or the 4k in a different color or just "ultra" and add a little flare or color to that. Utilizing so much change to the point the entirety is switched seems unnecessary to me, the black/silver theme is hideous in it's cliche and basic try hard -ness.

When mixed in with 2 other video formats on the shelf, sometimes with only the spine showing, it will be difficult if the cases are blue. I don't see any issue with black cases. DVD cases were black and I don't think people took issue with them. I think glossy black cases will look nice. They want them to have a "premium" look. Black should work well for that.
