You can. D+ was because they could do it easily to help boost theater sales. I plan to watch it in the AMC Dolby Theater if it's offered. I had originally seen it on a true IMAX 3D screen and really enjoyed it. But that closed and only have AMC IMAX as an option, which I tend to avoid.

I’m not disagreeing with the business of initially greenlighting the movies, but the further we get away from the original, the less audiences seem to care in this case. These sequels have snark bait for a long time. I just really wish Cameron spent his talents elsewhere instead of wasting his time with a franchise that hasn’t been relevant in 12 years.

And there you have the reason people are disparaging these sequels. Thanks for saying the quiet part out loud. I'm eagerly awaiting the sequels, and they're the only movies that will get me to set foot in a theater again. Can't wait!

In the lead up to Titanic and Avatar people thought those movies would be failures as well. And Titanic's opening weekend only added to that. Yet they became the biggest hits ever. Cameron has proven that he can make movies that people want to see even if they lack any pre-release excitement. Even I didn't expect to like Avatar based on early trailers.
It's completely possible that both sequels will be financial disappointments and end all plans on sequels 4 and 5 but you either bet against Cameron or you don't.

Im sure it is, not officially announced yet but would be odd considering there was some news about the sequels getting proper physical release while back.

Avatar has great protecting nature and wildlife , nature vs man themes that are more relevant than ever atleast imo and it was and is very important for Cameron also... And cgi is obviously very relevant thing nowdays still

Yeah its kind of silly, I feel like anyone who really wants to see it again in the theater will already be planning on doing that regardless of whether it is on D+ or not. Hard to imagine there will be very many people going to try to stream it, realize its not there, and say well "I guess I better head out to the theater!" But its another example of just how transient these streaming services libraries are (obviously the HBO Max stuff recently even more so).

I'd guess that whenever they put it back it'll be the 4K version though.

Oh boy, are you going to be surprised when Avatar 2 makes Top Gun Maverick look like a huge bomb.

I think the people who live in this "no one cares about avatar" bubble are going to have a rough couple of months from December 2022 - April 2023.

I have a feeling it will do spectacular internationally and “very respectable” here (especially with so little competition), but I personally doubt it will come close to the original. I’d be more concerned about the third film, but it’s hard to make a true prediction until the second comes out. Mainstream audiences have long moved onto major IPs like Marvel and Star Wars. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve heard anyone in real life even mention Avatar in the last decade. Maybe they’ll remember with the new film, but it’s hard to say.

I think this whole concept of "nobody I know mentions avatar" doesn't fit the James Cameron model of film success.

With Titanic and Avatar and T2, he gets you excited by the sheer "event" feel that he brings to his film releases. They become a MUST-SEE at the time of release.

I think the internet fandom think too much of themselves. Nobody was talking about Top Gun and yet Maverick has made over a billion and is one of most people's favorite films of the year.

If Avatar 2 is loved, then a sequel that comes out soon has a great chance to ride the new wave of hype. We'll see how it goes.

Like someone said above, I bet on James Cameron, every time.

I expect 2 billion box office for Way of Water.

I definitely felt some degree of hype for Top Gun in the years it took for it to come out. Enough to make me think it would make as much as it did? Definitely not. But I think audiences (especially the 30s-50s aged suburban white male demographic) were looking for that kind of escapism (very American, very patriotic), and with those classic characters for the first time in 35 years. That hype bled onto other demographics as well. All of that paired with cinemas being more fully and safely open after COVID (even compared to Spider-Man a few months prior), it was just the right movie at the right time.

The first Avatar was also the right movie at the right time. It offered audiences an intense level of spectacle and the digital 3D gimmick when both were still such novelties. That’s the same reason why Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland over-performed a few months later. Then 3D died a slow death again. And audiences get (or rather EXPECT) almost the same level of spectacle from Marvel, Star Wars, or even from TV shows like Game of Thrones. I just don’t see what this new film will offer that those don’t, especially since Avatar’s characters aren’t nearly as iconic as any from those. For reference, Alice’s 2016 sequel absolutely tanked. I don’t think Avatar 2 will flop, but I don’t think it will compare to the first. That’s all I’m saying. Would love to be proven wrong since cinemas certainly need the boost.

I didn't know I'd feel this way but after seeing the marked difference in quality between the Way of Water teaser and what Disney offered up with CGI-heavy sequences in Pinocchio and the Little Mermaid teaser, I'm excited to see what James Cameron offers with Avatar 2.

That said, I'm looking forward to owning Avatar in 4K HDR when it's eventually released.

James Cameron isn’t going to release a bad movie. He’s had opposition for his entire career. Aliens/T2/Titanic/Avatar. He always surpasses expectations and breaks new cinematic ground. I don’t see why this would be any different. I’m super pumped for a new Cameron film. His films made me fall in love with movies.

Wondering this too, or at least a 4K version. Has it been confirmed whether they will release this 4k upmaster (+/- atmos) in blu-ray?

Has anyone heard if they're going with the old dual-aspect ratio thing for this theatrical re-release? When Avatar first came out, theaters with CIH screens received the scope version, while CIW theaters got the flat one.

I'm not sure how that panned out in 2009, since some multiplexes have both types of screens and probably moved it around to different auditoriums. And now, with many theaters not even bothering with screen masking anymore, I wonder how much confusion that would create.

The re-release trailer is in 2.39:1, so it seems they have prepared a scope version.
